Dr "O" was thorough in his testing but did not explain a lot of the details beyond some of the initial perfunctory information. I do not have any obvious reasons for GI tract issues, so he basically didn't have any suggestions other than-- try Beano, and try to eliminate things from your diet. I had to ask for specific instructions on how to eliminate foods from my diet, and still he didn't have a lot of concrete suggestions. I am seeing another doctor that is much more helpful and do not have plans to return to UCLA's Digestive Health Center. GI tract issues are rarely that cut and dry, but it seems like that's all they can deal with at the UCLA center. I gave them a B because it wasn't helpful for me, but I would not assume that they can't be helpful for others.

NOT REAL GOOD. IV injected. Hooked up to telemetry system. Supposed to monitor vital signs (Blood Oxygen and pressure, pulse etc) at nurses? station. More on this later. Due to two falls and reason(s) unknown, they kept me over night for observation, which was good. Gave me peace of mind and hope they could help me. Admitted 0030 18 May 09, 8 hours after admit to ER. Bed had hoist which was good, possible reason for long wait (availability). No big deal. I in darkened room so to rest, drugged and dozing. 2200 hrs Male stranger in white coat came in. Male stranger said he was doctor. Asked me "Why are you here?" I asked if he read chart. Male stranger said "I don't read charts". Usually doctors read charts. So this male stranger could have been a floor sweeper. Then this male stranger asked about my medical insurance. I asked ?What kind of ignorant question was this? Mebbe put male stranger on defensive but I didn?t care as male stranger question was uncalled for and sprang on a doped up patient. . No response. this male stranger wouldn?t answer my question. Did this male stranger worry more about getting paid than my well being? Told this male stranger so and how I was processed earlier so check admitting. More argument. I got out of bed. Near pulled out the IV and told this male stranger I?m leaving. This male stranger told me to ?GO AHEAD?. When I hit floor and taken few steps found I wasn?t up to leaving. Noticed name on white coat said Altamirano. This male stranger finally identified. Still didn?t know he was a MD. Could have been a Male Nurse stranger. Fell trying to get into wheel chair for transport upstairs. Nothing done or said. Taken upstairs to bed with hoist 18 May 0100. Normal blood Oxygen levels are 95-97-100. I was feeling sickly. Wife and I noticed monitor said Blood Oxygen Level went to 85-90 for hour or so. Told nursing folks this happened. NO RESPONSE. INATTENTION FACTOR COVERED UP IN SUBSEQUENT WRITTEN REPORTS. CRITICAL MEDICAL INFORMATION IGNORED IMPORTANT: HAD ANOTHER STROKE ON 20 MAY 09. FORTUNATELY MOSTLY RECOVERED. Professional, caring nursing staff. Good food. Monitored blood etc most of day then discharged 1830 hrs. Discharge Instructions said don?t drive for 2 weeks. I HAVE HAD (3) THREE SEPARATE BYPASS SURGERIES. ALTAMIRANO SAID ?HE DOESN?T READ CHARTS?. CAN HE EVEN READ? After three bypasses, a body may be out of viable parts (veins) for a fourth. IF COMPLICATIONS HAD ARISEN DURING THIS HOSPITAL STAY, i.e., IF I CODED, WRONG OR INCOMPLETE INFORMATION COULD HAVE KILLED ME. MADE ME A STATISTIC OR A VEGETABLE. QUESTIONABLE RADIOLOGY HCMC FOUND HERNIA. VPH DID NOT. SLOPPY POST-DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS Comprehensive drug list was provided PRIOR TO going to emergency room. Despite this, WRONG DOSAGE. i.e. ZOCOR /SIMVASTATIN. I TAKE 80 MG DAY, NOT 40. NO MENTION OF ISOSORBIDE DINITRATE. THIS DRUG IS ONE OF TWO THAT KEEP ME ALIVE. Mebbe gave me Lomotil in hospital. Discharge Instructions said continue. Never heard of this drug. Pharmacist said they don?t make Lomotil any more so couldn?t fill prescription. Nobody asked me if I had various listed drugs on hand. Don?t know what Sonata is. Mebbe given in hospital. FALLS First week med student could have figured out a) abnormally low blood oxygen levels combined with dehydration, lack of food could have contributed to falls. COVERED UP IN WRITTEN REPORT. No cause factors identified. Guess ?Don?t Drive for two Weeks? was CYA measure. PATIENT RELATIONS A Mr Price, Selena Ruiz, Admit Supervisor and Norma, her Assistant were empathetic, concerned and helpful regarding shabby treatment. Patient Relations guru VIRGINIA NAPOLES a) wouldn?t return my 2 calls, and b) most arrogant and defensive when I talked to her 1 month after experience. EXCUSES AND COVER UP, NOT PATIENT RELATIONS. HUNG UP ON ME BECAUSE I TOOK TOO MUCH OF HER TIME. PRICELESS. CONCLUSION RESULT GOOD OUTCOME MS RUIZ/NORMA GOT RISK MANAGER MR PRICE AND I TOGETHER. SENSIBLE RESOLUTION. DISCUSSED AT LENGTH. SAID HE?D ADDRESS INTERNALLY. REQUESTED I BE FAIR IN EVALUATION WHICH I HAVE BEEN.

This is a fabulous doctor, with a great bedside manner. He explained everything clearly and never seemed rushed during the pre-procedure visit.
