Deck Building reviews in Valley Center

  • Chris is extremely easy to work with. He's reliable, punctual, neat and very competent at his job. He inspected all materials thoroughly and handled a complaint with Marvin Windows directly. He delivered the trim boards early to give me plenty of time to paint them myself which many contractors are not thoughtful enough to do. 2.5 years later there are no issues with the windows or doors that he installed. I recommend Chris and would hire him for any work he's able to perform without bothering with competing bids.

  • Dave Frazer was prompt in coming out and giving information and an estimate on the total job. His crew showed up on time, and he was with them to introduce them to us and give them instructions on our specifications. The crew did and excellent job and cleaned up well. The job was done a day ahead of schedule and we are very pleased.

  • Before we started, the deck looked pretty bad. The concern was the unknown conditions underneath.   After opening it up it was clear that no one should have been walking on the deck. There was a danger of falling through in one location.
Eric had a good approach to just put new rafters alongside vs pulling the old ones and possibly damaging the roof that was supported under the rafters.
The deck looks great and is now safe and waterproof. I couldn't be happier. You don't come by these people skills by accident.
I would highly recommend Eric and his crew

  • When Don came to the house, he took his time, did a detailed inspection of the house, and was very frank with me about what work coiuld be managed within my budget.  He explained that the balcony work that I was hoping to do was a very large job, and could not reasonably be done within my constrataints.  He promised a bid for that work and the eaves mentioned above.  The one grievance I have is that the balcony bid never arrived.
Several days later I received the  bid for the eaves and accepted it, and quickly a work date was scheduled.
When the workmen came, one of whom proved to be the owner of the company.  Work progressed quickly and efficiently.  All my expectations were met.
When the balcony work is within our budget, I will call them back.  I was very happy with the bidding process and the work.

  • He took a month and a half to get a simple repair done. Never had the right parts so would leave to return another day. Spent far more time talking politics than getting anything done. When it was finally done after several weeks they billed for twice what the had quoted all through the process. They blamed how long the job took. When I questioned the bill she became very nasty and threatened us with a builders lean on the house. We ultimately paid rather than fight the battle. We're warning the community before someone else gets taken. This is a family operation and these are not good people.

  • After a crooked contractor completely fouled up the reconstruction of a large2nd story balcony by, among other things, mounting posts for the surround rail system all wrong (at extreme angles to one another) and then absconding with $2+k of my money leaving me "hanging" with an unfinished project, I was desperate. Saw an ad in the local paper for Sherman Co. and called. Owner Barry Sherman. After hearing the tale of woe of a lady in distress, came that same day to look over the situation. He said he could fix and finish the balcony (was not overwhelmed by the challenge), and fit me in to begin the next day, which he did. Barry and his son, Gray, were not only competent but very skilled in all aspects of the building trades. They made the process as painless as possible by being punctual, organized (arriving with all the proper tools and materials to do the day's task), quiet and mannerly, efficient in division of labor and teamwork, neat and careful as they worked, and conscientious about cleanup when they finished both at end of day and end of job. Sherman Co. exhibited a work ethic and pride in their craft seldom found anymore. It took talent to rectify and complete my project and entailed figuring out and altering the design, extreme precision in execution and great attention to detail! In under 2 days the job was completed and the result was better than I ever imagined it could be! As I am a retired Interior Designer with more than 25 years of experience working with the trades, I feel qualified to evaluate and rate contractors. Plus, soon after Sherman Co. finished my small project, on my recommendation a friend hired them for a major remodel that entailed converting an upstairs bedroom into an "en suite" bathroom --- a very tricky redesign of the floor-plan that involved knocking out walls, cutting through a closet, rerouting hall etc. I ended up being involved from start to finish during about a 6 week period this summer and observed every stage. They did it all and did it well from the planning with her (no Architect) to the demo, plumbing, electrical, framing, dry-walling, texture coating, waterproofing, tiling, flooring, finished carpentry and painting. They also looked out for my friend's "bottom-line" as with their forethought of "re-purposing" materials that other contractors would have tossed in a dumpster, there was considerable savings to her. There was also an unusual circumstance with which the Shermans coped. Due to a family emergency, my friend had to be out of town for a month during the project! Thus, she appreciated not only how they continued without her but also how they prevailed when "unforeseen challenges" arose. During this time they accommodated her by communicating via long distance phone and by emailing photos as the work progressed. She was thrilled with her new bathroom and continues to comment on the fine quality of the work. I would recommend Sherman Co. wholeheartedly for any project large or small! I have taken the time and energy to write this lengthy review not only because I believe they are deserving of your patronage, but also because there are so many charlatans and con artists in the building trades (even I wasn't immune to getting ripped off) --- Maybe this will prevent someone else from having an awful experience like I did! :-)

  • The north county crew from Handyman Connection is fabulous. We needed a lot done but couldn't afford to go through a building contractor. I interviewed several handymen and Micheal Ferlita was the one handyman who could tackle this size job. In fact, he seemed to really enjoy figuring out how to tackle some of the trickier problems. He was not afraid to give me a cost estimate to trim back the rotten eves while others were insisting on time and materials. He was organized, planned ahead and came up with some good solutions to numerous unforseeable problems that came up with my "nonstandard" house. He tallied up and ordered the lumber for me (I paid for it, but with his discount). He wrote up a very detailed contract and came in exactly on time and budget. The price was very reasonable. The work took about a week. The house has never looked so good. Everyone really loves the deck he and his two assistants built. I can't say enough about Mike and his crew. They were hard working, professional, skilled, and very pleasant to have around. I absolutely plan on hiring them again.

  • After hearing what I wanted, Larry called a supplier to price Trex materials, and then gave me a hand written estimate for $17,500. When I admitted this estimate was thousands higher than the second highest estimate (which itself was $14,000) he turned without a word to leave. Following behind I tried to thank him for his time and effort and his answer was "I don't want to waste any more of my time". I thought it was pretty rude.

  • We never used them. Please make sure we get our money back.
    Thanks,
