    Torrance Memorial Medical Center
prenatal classes: we did almost all of the prenatal classes (breastfeeding, infant/child cpr, and the birth and child care classes). the classes were very helpful. the teachers were either past or current nurses, and were very informative. they gave helpful, current information. if i think back on the classes... 1) the birthing class allowed us to practice relaxation techniques in case we decided to do an epidural-free birth. it helped us know what to expect and have tools to effectively prepare for the pain. 2) the infant/child cpr class also provided good info for future emergencies. 3) the infant care class was great in giving detailed power points on anything from changing a diaper to packing your bag for the hospital to bathing your baby. they showed us how to swaddle a baby, and allowed us to practice. 4) the breastfeeding classes was also extremely informative that was my favorite class, as the lactation consultant gave a lot of information on what to expect in the first few weeks of birth. this alleviated my fears, and gave me helpful resources to look back at during the first (chaotic) month of my daughter's life. for someone who didn't have a background in caring for children, these classes were great. if i only had time for one class, it would be the breastfeeding class, because the lactation consultant incorporated a lot of information from other classes into this one class.
in labor/delivery at torrance memorial, the nurses were excellent. they were informative, caring, compassionate, helpful, clear communicators, and even funny! i had an epidural (from a great anesthesiologist), which may have helped my mood. however, the nurses made my experience positively memorable. they gave clear information from the beginning about what i would experience with induced labor. also, when i needed help, they were quick to respond. this wing of the hospital was light, bright, spacious, and comfortable.
in the mother/baby department, the nurses were also helpful and informative. most were kind and compassionate too. i did not connect as well with the nurses in this department as i did with those in labor/delivery, but that could just be my personality and the hormonal ups/downs of having a baby. as for the environment, this wing of the hospital was not as comfortable. the rooms felt a little small, as they were rectangular. if you have more than a few people in the room, it feels really cramped. also, the nurses seem extra busy, so it wasn't as calming of an environment as the labor/delivery side. i still think they did a great job of caring for our baby, my family, and me. they were always asking me how i was doing, and was very responsive to any questions. the lactation consultant was also very supportive and helpful. i think she's a volunteer.
overall, this is a great hospital. i am very happy with the services provided and the resources available.

My wife has problems with back pain, arthritis, and sinus infections. She was beginning to take a new medication prescribed by a doctor. She has an on-going concern with the side effects that medications can induce. She was having some reaction to a medication that potentially could have been serious, so she went to the emergency room at Torrance Memorial to have someone check on her condition The emergency room at the hospital is very well organized. She was admitted for treatment promptly and seen by a doctor and some specialty nurses. She was found to be in good condition and released. She stopped taking the medication and was given an alternate by her doctor.
Our experience with the emergency room was generally positive. As is the case with most hospital services, the cost that they wanted to charge for what they did seemed really high, but the insurance companies seem to have ways reining in the costs. We would not hesitate to make use of the emergency room services again should the need arise.

The experience there was very positive. I am probably talking to you today because of them. The doctor there gave me his cellphone number when I left in case we needed him, which is kind of unusual on this day and age.

My mother's surgery went fine, no issues with op or post-op service. Due to overflow, she was placed on a postpartum floor. I don"t know if this fact impaired her further care, but as a nurse I know it was unacceptable. She and her roommate were not checked on a regular basis, and her roommate nearly wet her bed due to waiting over 30 minutes after ringing her call light for assistance to the bathroom, as she had difficulty walking on her own. My mother complained of being cold (to point of shaking), and nothing was done; she ended up with the beginnings of a respiratory infection which required longer stay. When I came one morning and she mentioned pain at her IV site, I had to approach her assigned RN about not only her IV, but several other issues she was having (not receiving her home meds, etc), and finally the staff stepped up their game, but it was too late to change the horrible impression. This hospital is fine, as long as you know someone in the field who can get the staff cracking; otherwise, your needs will not be addressed in a timely manner.

They offer Tai-Chi classes and Yoga. Part of the medical center is full of all sorts of yoga classes, weight control, and for me Tai-Chi. Torrance Memorial is one of the best hospitals in the LA area. They offer a senior discount which is very nice for me.
