My husband and I were having a hard time deciding exactly what we wanted done in our backyard. Our house is 30 years old, we have a large lot and even though it was professionally landscaped many years ago, it needed a complete overhaul. Gary came out and gave us an initial estimate for the work we thought we were going to want to have done. We had had a few other estimates, but no one else really...

THANK YOU A1 LANDSCAPE & DESIGN! I needed landscape done, so I called A1 Landscape and Design and spoke with the owner. He came to my home  and discussed all my ideas with me and gave alternatives that DID work better financially and visually. He and his crew started on time, and within my budget. I love my yard and would call him again!

We signed a contract for approximately $28,000 to irrigate and landscape approximately 1 acre. He collected $9,000 at the contract signing. Turns out this is against California Business and Professions code which states he can collect only $1,000 if a down payment is requested and nothing (i.e. $0) if payment schedules are stated. B&P Code section      §7159(d)(9)(C)states ?IT IS AGAINST THE LAW F...

My experience is that the man is completely untrustworthy. He repeatedly tried to cut corners and skip steps in that he had agreed to in the contract. He constantly tried to get us to pay for the electrical sub-contractor that was part of his scope of work. He complained that he was losing money on the job. I sent him an email detailing his costs (I costed each part of the job) and calculated his ...

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
We employed Gary Gunia (A1 Landscaping) to re-work our back yard. It was a nightmare! A1 Landscaping talked a good game and referred frequently to a large project he was doing at March Airforce Base, so he sounded bona fide. We had a hard time getting landscape contractors to even show up to bid, so the fact that Gary Gunia showed up with a good story was welcome. Naively, I did not do as thorough a back ground check as I should have. He was very reluctant to get the required permits for the work.  First he tried to talk me out of getting permits at all. That is not a good policy for safety's sake, and if you ever want to sell your house, so I insisted that permits be used. Then, he wanted me to pull the permits as an owner-builder. I talked to the city permit department about that and learned the extent of the risk I would have assumed had I done that. I checked Gary Gunia's credentials online a CSLB. I learned that he had no workers compensation insurance. He had filed an affidavit with the CSLB that he had no employees. But he lied to me, and said that he did have full insurance coverage for liability and workers comp.  (Note - On his website says: "Liability insurance and workers' compensation certificates are available upon request". Not true. They are not! Read below) I learned that he paid his employees cash "under the table" and calls them independent contractors. That is unethical and illegal. So, I called a halt to the project and demanded that he provide proof of both workers comp and liability insurance. That took over a week while he tried to get coverage. He more or less begged to be allowed to continue the project. With a pile of dirt in my drive, a big hole in my yard, and a sprinkler system that they had destroyed, it was easier for me to continue using Gary Gunia's crew than to find some one new to complete the job. So, I allowed him to resume work. He said, "Thank you for trusting me." I told him that I did not trust him and inch and would watch him like a hawk. He said he still wanted to continue, saying it would enhance his portfolio. They got the permits, then had to re-do some of the work (retaining wall footings) because the work didn't satisfy the building inspector. And that was because Gary didn't research the requirements properly, but tried to skimp and do the least possible. He repeatedly requested a stage payments prematurely, claiming he had no money to pay his men. He constantly tried to omit work that was in the contract. For example, his workers started preparing to plant. The design called for full soil amendment, which they had not done. My wife called Gary. He said that he forgot about that step! Come on! He's a landscape contractor and he forgot about the soil amendment! Would you believe that? Then he told his workers to just add the amendment around the plants. The Landscape Designer's plan called for full amendment all over, and I called her to confirm this. Although Gary never returned our call about this, they stopped work to wait for the amendment. When selling the project Gary assured us that he only runs one project at a time and he is always on site. In fact, he has hardly been here, leaving his workers to get on with it unsupervised. He shows up about 7:00 am, is gone by 8:00, and that's the last we see of him. On 11/16/12 the electrician was installing circuits, the workers are preparing for paths, but Gary hadn't shown up at all by 10:30 am. The project called for Decomposed Granite (DG) pathways. The Designers plan specified they should be laid in 1" lifts and wet rolled between lifts. Gunia's crew were about to start laying the DG and there was no roller or compactor in sight. I asked them where it was. Silence. I told them to call Gary (it goes without saying, he wasn't on site). He called me and said that they don't do that. I replied that his contract said he does, so he'd better get a roller immediately and do the work properly. He did. When we tried to first use the drip system, it flooded an enclosure that was intended for a spa to a depth of 3". The volume of water in the enclosure was about 195 gals. The adjacent emitters were supposed to put out 1 gal/hr and so would only have delivered 20 gal in the time it took to flood the enclosure. We still haven't found out where the additional 175 gals came from. There is very likely a leak somewhere, but Gunia hasn't figured it out.
