    Shonnard, Dr. Paul Y.
I was totally dismissed by Dr. Shonnard's office six weeks after surgery with the idea that if a problem should arise, I would immediately be in contact with him. Am relieved of former pain and am healing well.

    Rupp, Dr. Robert E
He is very good at what he does. He is very knowledgeable. He is not unfriendly, but he does not talk a lot. You will have to draw information out of him. I will use his services again in the future.

P.T. Craig Barton and Assistant Hannah provided excellent guidance and motivation through 40 scheduled visits. They always showed concern and compassion and were able to help me meet and exceed all of my rehab goals. The entire staff and group of therapists made for an great experience. I would highly recommend them.

The doctor was great. He asked if our insurance covered an MRI...since we have a high deductible, it did not. He took X-Rays, asked a lot of relevant questions and spent time with us. He did not make us feel rushed. He suggested that we wait two weeks, ice the knee, stay off of it and take ibuprofen. The knee did heal by itself and it saves us a lot of money by not having an MRI when we really did not need it. So often, doctors jump to unnecessary tests that cost patients a lot of money!

The procedure went better than expected. Dr. Halki decided on a less invasive procedure. Which, he explained, would result in less pain and a faster recovery rate. So far everything is healing well and the pain is being managed. Walking about a mile everyother day and going out shopping for short periods. I'm very pleased.

Dr. Kalisvaart was all business prior to the surgery and that is an okay thing. He took the time to explain what I needed, which was a total knee replacement. Even though my appointment was the 21st of December, I asked Dr. K and his assistant, Merisa, if there was any way she could get me scheduled for surgery prior to the end of the year (in 10 days!) because my high insurance deductible was already met for the calendar year. Merisa is great and will attend to your needs promptly, efficiently, and thoroughly. She somehow maneuvered one of the other orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Renny Uppal (also a good surgeon and a compassionate man), to release one of his surgical slots at Renown South early in the morning of the 31st of December, to me. This allowed Dr. Kalisvaart the surgical time to be able to do my surgery. Hallelujah! I was so ready for the surgery.  The surgery went splendidly. Dr. Kalisvaart impressed me greatly because on the day of the surgery, he came up to my room in between his 2nd and 3rd scheduled surgeries to see how I was doing and to tell me how the surgery went. He made sure my pain was under control from a medication standpoint. He wrote a great set of orders for the Renown floor nurses to follow because I had been on a high amount of pain medicine for the last two decades (underlying auto inflammatory joint disease) and by the time of the surgery, I had a high tolerance for pain which would then require that I have an inordinately high amount of narcotics on board so that I could be comfortable while in the hospital. He did not look at me like I was a junkie because he had taken the time to review my rheumatologist's and internist's records and see why it was that I was on the medicines I was and what the reasoning for the dosages was.  Back to Dr. Kalisvaart. I had surgery on Wednesday and checked out on Friday. He came to the hospital every day to see me. That was great and the thing that I appreciated the most other than his great surgical skills. The following Monday he called me at home to see how I was doing. Wow.  I have done so well since the surgery that I had to give credit to someone other than me. So at my first follow-up consultation, I asked him what he did that made my surgery so successful. He said he didn't know (very humble), but said he always takes the time to methodically check out every element of the joint structure, correct what he finds, and then get out of the surgical site and close so that he patient's surgical site is not open to the elements for one minute longer than necessary thereby reducing the risk of infection. Job well done, Dr. Kalisvaart!  I also had no fear of him being a "new" surgeon even though he had just started with the ROC four months prior to my surgery. By the time these guys get into private practice and have finished their orthopedic training and fellowship, they have done a thousand knees. Also, they know the newest techniques from every medical perspective and that is a very good thing.  I can't tell you how glad I am that Dr. K was my orthopedic surgeon for a surgery that can be debilitating and potentially permanently disabling, at worst. Hopefully after reading what I have written, you will not have one moment of concern about committing to Dr. K as the lead member of your surgical team.
