Drain Pipe Installation reviews in Santa Monica

  • The job went very well. Showtime was my 3rd estimate for the job and the only one to give a fixed priced / guaranteed proposal to address a blocked external storm drain. Most of the others wanted to dig up the pipes where the blockage was and then decide what to do, with estimates ranging from $1500 to $5000 depending on what they found and how much of the existing ~10 feet of pipe needed to be replaced using the same torturous path as the existing line. Showtime did not spend a lot of time on diagnosing the problem given the extent of old pipe involved but suggested what appeared to be the most straight-forward solution of just cutting the pipe before what was at least the first blockage and re-routing it to the street. He guaranteed it would work whereas the other plumbers said it would not. Despite a few delays in actually getting an estimate as his office was backed up with other emergent jobs, the day of the job they were punctual and got it all done as promised. While the actual price was a little high for what was ultimately done and the time required, having a known scope of work with a known price and a guarantee behind it was worth it. They were polite, cleaned up well, and provided a solution that will likely be more long lasting than the options the other plumbers suggested. I will be calling Showtime again next time we have a plumbing issue!

  • CFW's team is excellent.  They came in on the date they said they would, and were "all business".  After they excavated the soil on the neighboring property 3' deep along our partition wall (not in any particular order, but...), they installed a surface system along the wall to catch surface water and a drain line to the alley, moved the neighbor's shed so they could install the custom drainage, re-pitched (graded) the neighbors' yard, added the rain gutters to the neighbors' garage, installed waterproofing membrane onto the foundation/retaining wall after removing the prior substandard waterproofing (they actually removed that old waterproofing with bristle brushes so as to make sure the wall is prepared properly for waterproofing), plus other related work.  (Note that we already had french drain system in place along our neighbor's side of our partition wall)  The work was completed within about 10 business days, just as Brian had anticipated.  During the process, the team showed up on-time, they were quiet, dirt wasn't unnessarily "flying" all over the place, and they all seemed to work well in coordination with each other.
I can't say enough about this company.  They were terrific, and their price is more than reasonable for what they needed to do. Mostly, we appreciated Brian's honesty.  He didn't try to "make work" or "pad" anything.  He wasn't an "alarmist" like some of the other contractors who gave us quotes.  He clearly knows his business.  He curiously and objectively inspects the problem areas, and applies common sense to determining a solution.

  • Jose came out to give us an estimate on a leaky pipe (part of the sprinkler system) and stayed to do the work immediately. He was a very trustworthy man, not only repaired the leak but did a fabulous clean up job and made sure the rest of the system was working properly. Because we had to leave for work, he left us a bill and I mailed him a check. Two weeks later and all is well .

  • The Good:  The first plumber who came out did his very best to access the sewer line, but understandably was not able to do so because of the configuration of the pipes and their very small width.  He worked hard and then clearly explained the problem afterwards.  He said that he would have another plumber come out 2 days later with a smaller camera, who hopefully would be able to access the sewer line to tell us its condition.
The Bad:  Two days later at the set time, however, we were at the home and waiting...waiting... after about 20 minutes, I called the company to confirm the appointment.  They had no record of it.  They told us that one of the owners of the company, Joel, was on his way, but it would be 30 or 45 minutes before he arrived.  Once he did, he told us that it was for this reason that he didn't like plumbers to make appointments but that the office staff should be making appointments.  That's fine, but that's really his company's problem, not ours. We waited over an hour and 15 minutes for him to arrive.
The Frustrating:  Upon leaving, he promised to send us an estimate the next day for the installation of a cleanout pipe.  After almost a week of not receiving it, I called the office, left a message for the estimates person, waited some more... and then an employee called to say it had been it had been emailed a week ago.  Turns out, they were one letter off on the email address, so I never received it.
So my experience with this company has been kind of like a perfect storm.  They were late for the follow-up appointment because of poor communication and then they were late with the estimate.  They aren't bad people... I just wasn't impressed with their service that they didn't get it right.  More attention to detail would have gone a long way

  • So all said, it was a very positive experience and saved me a lot of money.  The pipe relining is very advanced now and has a 50 year life expectancy on the solid resin pipe that lines the inside of the old pipe.  In the first hydro-jetting phase, the only problem was that the technician let the nozzle get too close to the bathroom in one of the units and it blasted water through the toilet into the bathroom.  Just a little and the tenant kindly cleaned it up himself.  The process did a great job cleaning the pipe so we could take a good look with the camera.  We located exactly where the problem was.  The truck with the relining kit came out a few days later and took care of the problem.   Plan for what may be a called a two-hour job to be a 10 hour job in case they have problems reattaching the pipe where they have to insert the pipe lining equipment.  This happened to me, but the plumber stayed until 8:30pm to get it done.  So far it's worked perfectly.  Well worth it.

  • First they responded to a phone call and an appointment was made for an estimate.
The estimate appointment came quickly and promptly.
The repair was done the next day.
It was done fast and properly.

  • The crew was on time for the 2 day job, worked hard, and finished in the timeframe they discussed.  As far as quality of the work given it was a sewer line fix it's hard for a novice to tell (we've had no issues so far) so I can't say with credibility it was an A+ quality job but given the quality of the interaction with George I have every reason to think it was done with pride and quality.
My only small quibble would be the landscaping replacement was not 100% as it was prior to the work, but I place that significance low on my list of priorities and only mention it to give a comprehensive review.
Overall I would 100% do business with New Pipe again and have referred people to them.

  • Nilo had to reschedule from Saturday to the following Wednesdaydue to a rainstorm. Since our appointment on Saturday was for 8:30am, I assumed when we rescheduled to Wednesday, it would also be 8:30am. At 9am, I hadn't seen Nilo, so I called him - he explained he was on another job that was taking longer than expected, and that he'd be over by 1pm, which is exactly when he showed up. I feel that I should have confirmed the time he was coming over when we rescheduled to Wednesday, so this was miscommunication on my part. When Nilo and his crew arrived, since I knew they'd be digging near some pipes, I showed them where the irrigation pipes and electrical for the irrigation was so they'd know where to dig carefully. We had exchanged several emails about what they'd be doing, so I was very clear on his plan, so they started working immediately. Overall Nilo and his team spent about half a day installing the pipes and pouring the cement. When they finished, Nilo came to show me what they had done, and we tested the drains to confirm they were working as designed. Everything looks great and we're happy with the work Nilo and his team did for us. We are already considering having Nilo and his team do another drainage project on our house and will certainly call him for any future work. Nilo is great!

  • McGrath did foundation work after our home closing. They installed a drain and support under the house. This did a nice job overall with what I could see. They were very professional and neat, etc. My one issue was the following: They told me that they would repair the dryer venting under the house. They did the repair. I discovered several months later, from another contractor, that the dryer venting had not been done properly and that debris was collecting under my house. This is a fire hazard. Since I can't easily investigate work done under my home, it was disturbing to learn this. I have to wonder if the other work under the home was done properly. I emailed the company to let them know and they never responded to my email. I was expecting an apology of some sort or at least "we'll ensure this doesn't happen in the future."

  • We received bids from sewer contractors ranging from $6400 to $9300. Shields was one of the lowest bids and also seemed to have a good knowledge of servicing sewers in Santa Monica, where we are located. We decided to go with them on a Monday and they started work a couple days later. They would have finished by the weekend, but had to wait for the city crew to come out to make the actual connection to the city sewer, which resulted in a couple days of downtime. The job was finished within a week and we were only without sewer service for a total of a couple hours. If your job requires backfill with a slurry mix like Santa Monica requires (and is a good idea in any event), be prepared to receive a nasty letter from their slurry supplier immediately after the job is finished. This is apparently a strategy their supplier uses to get you to bug Shields to pay them fast. (I ran into similar harrassment when we replaced our roof, so I guess this practice isn't uncommon.) Also, the address I have for Shields is 24325 Crenshaw Blvd, Torrance, not the address shown on Angies List. However, the phone number shown is correct.
