It went very well! How many homeowners can say that about their remodeling experience? Shai was wonderful. At its inception, Shai had a better vision on how we could obtain a large, open space (without expanding our home’s footprint) than any architect or designer we had worked with. He was also mindful of costs and worked with us to stay within a reasonable budget. As far as cost is concerned, there were no surprises. We began with a contract containing a detailed payment schedule. The nice thing about Butel Construction’s billing is that it reflects exactly what was on the contract. It really helped build trust. We made changes along the way but before the change was made, it was always preceded with a work order so we knew what to expect. And there were smaller changes that Shai was kind enough to absorb. He is not all about making money...he is more about integrity and kindness. Of course there were bumps along the way. It is to be expected with a project as large as ours in such an old home. So here’s another great thing about Shai...when we encountered a problem, Shai kept communication open and was very responsive. We were able to navigate issues due to his creativity and positive attitude. He never blamed or made excuses. He simply found a way to fix it. Because Shai is busy, he has a project manager, Miguel. Miguel was also extremely responsive and very knowledgeable. I gained such confidence in Miguel after watching him repeatedly make things happen that some said could not be done. It was obvious that Miguel and Shai work together and share communications at all times. Shai also has a framing supervisor Joel. Joel was aware of my objective - to open walls and windows as much as possible. Upon the commence of demolition, Joel took a look at the staircase and felt there might be a way to open the staircase. Shai agreed. I was thrilled because two architects and an engineer told me it could not be done. Shai went to engineering and now we have a lovely staircase as you see in photos. Perhaps the greatest testament to Butel Construction is my husband Skip’s experience. Skip was not comfortable with construction and was reluctant to remodel. He was very happy to live in the 1929 house as it was. I, on the other hand, I pushed for a change even though I knew construction can be tough on a marriage. When we met Shai, Skip opened up to the project. However, Skip wanted little to do with the construction. Despite the high stakes, I gave Shai the go ahead. WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID! We moved back into the house seven months ago and if we do find something that needs fixing or changing Shai is there. Last night Skip walked into the kitchen and commented, once again, on how impressive the room is. And tonight, we will be entertaining and enjoying homemade pizza from our pizza oven....the pizza oven Shai installed on our new deck. Skip is a happy camper! THANK YOU SHAI AND MIGUEL AND JOSE AND JOEL

We had a NIGHTMARE when we bought a house in Santa Monica & hired another construction company to fix our foundation. We were so "burned" that we got other estimates, but decided to do the work later. When we sold the house, the buyer insisted on getting the foundation repaired. I'd gotten a GOOD estimate from a company called Construction Masters (at the same time as the other company), but STUPIDLY went with the other company. I had kept the estimate Mickey and Moshe had given me when we bought the house & they honored that price. The estimate also included a kitchen and bathroom remodel as well. I needed them to match it "apples to apples" with the (horribly over-priced) estimate buyer had gotten for same job. They came back with estimate that was almost HALF of theirs. :) They did a GREAT job & the buyers were VERY happy with their work. CAN'T recommend Construction Masters enough - GREAT, HONEST WORK DONE BY GREAT, HONEST MEN!

It went flawlessly. I was worried at first because I've never had to have this done before, but they made it super easy. They were extremely punctual and professional. I talked to a few companies before deciding on using them, and I'm so glad I ended up with their company.

Shay was wonderful to work with. He was diligent, courteous and professional. His workers were hard working and very nice. The job he did was exactly as he told me it would be and it turned out great. He was always on time and had a good attitude. I would definitely hire Shay and his team again for other jobs.

The previous owners of the house replaced the grass in the back yard with natural stones that are cemented in. Unfortunately they did it themselves and this has already cost me a lot of headaches and money (e.g. when the gas line that was cemented over needed to be replaced). With the El Nino precursors in January another problem of the patio became hard to ignore: the patio was not leveled correctly and quite a bit of water was getting into the garage.
Jeff came out twice to look at the situation and figure out ways that the issue could be resolved. We decided to only pull up half of the patio stones and not fully cement them back in so that there is also some chance for rain water to get into the ground (and to keep the cost under control which he was very conscious of). In addition to re-leveling the stones (most could be saved but some new ones had to be put in) Jeff installed a lot of new drainage (it turned out that even the existing drainage was not going anywhere - the were just slightly deeper holes in the ground).
A lot of things only became clear during the job (which was >1 week) and Jeff did a lot of adjustments and extras during the work (cutting off some steal sticking out of the patio which were remnants from former beams holding up a roof, etc.) without any extra charges.
He and his crew were super reliable and diligent. I had to be gone for work for a number of days and I totally trusted them to do everything as discussed - rightfully so.
I am so happy to have this problem solved and in a timely manner before more storms are coming our ways. I highly recommend Jeff (and Caroly who coordinates things from the office) to anybody.

Having done our due diligence, my wife and I are confident that we made the right choice between the four general contractors we initially interviewed. At the completion of our project, we can truly say that it was a pleasure working with Sam and Bruce from A Clas.   Like many, we were nervous going into our remodel, having heard many nightmare general contractor stories, but were very lucky to have chosen  A Clas Builders.  They demonstrated extreme professionalism and genuine interest in our project, which essentially was a complete remodel of a 1926 Santa Monica Spanish Revival home, including a fair amount of structural work as called for by the structural engineer.  Their experience and expertise showed, and they have a very competent and trustworthy crew.  Additionally, they have great command of their various sub-contractors due to long-standing relationships and were also able to coordinate effectively with the handful of subs we brought in ourselves.  Throughout the project, they remained very responsive to our requests and exhibited a great deal of patience when faced with change orders.  They were very fair with regard to the cost of change orders, and are not in the business of nickel-and-diming each time a change is made.  Given the scope of work, we were amazed that we were able to move back into our home within a 12 month period.   The true test has come following the completion of the project, which is nearly one and a half years ago.  We continue to receive complements regarding the quality of the work done, and have not experienced any major issues outside of those expected with normal wear and tear, which they have been very responsive to.  Additionally, we have utilized them for an office remodel in a commercial building, and would not hesitate to hire them for any additional work to our home in the future.

CFW's team is excellent.  They came in on the date they said they would, and were "all business".  After they excavated the soil on the neighboring property 3' deep along our partition wall (not in any particular order, but...), they installed a surface system along the wall to catch surface water and a drain line to the alley, moved the neighbor's shed so they could install the custom drainage, re-pitched (graded) the neighbors' yard, added the rain gutters to the neighbors' garage, installed waterproofing membrane onto the foundation/retaining wall after removing the prior substandard waterproofing (they actually removed that old waterproofing with bristle brushes so as to make sure the wall is prepared properly for waterproofing), plus other related work.  (Note that we already had french drain system in place along our neighbor's side of our partition wall)  The work was completed within about 10 business days, just as Brian had anticipated.  During the process, the team showed up on-time, they were quiet, dirt wasn't unnessarily "flying" all over the place, and they all seemed to work well in coordination with each other.
I can't say enough about this company.  They were terrific, and their price is more than reasonable for what they needed to do. Mostly, we appreciated Brian's honesty.  He didn't try to "make work" or "pad" anything.  He wasn't an "alarmist" like some of the other contractors who gave us quotes.  He clearly knows his business.  He curiously and objectively inspects the problem areas, and applies common sense to determining a solution.

The night before they were supposed to come out they informed me that a different person would be coming out for the initial appointment.  They said that she was experience however she was a new employee.  After measuring the whole house she doubled the actual size of the crawl space.  Since she couldn't answer certain problems about how they were going to resolve the issue they said they would send the man out that was originally supposed to come out.  They sent me a bid that did not specify at all what it was going to do.  Compared to another estimate that I received her price was about 4 times more expensive.  I went down and talked to the city and got specifics.  After I spoke with the city they wanted to send a third person out because neither of the employees that already came out were able to answer my questions.
