    Bellows Plumbing, Heating & Air
Bellows technicians -- Jeremy and Sol -- recently came to my house to clean out the vent from my electric dryer thru the roof. I had only bought the house recently and did not know how long it had been since the vent was cleaned. Jeremy and Sol attacked the problem from both the bottom (at the vent entrance in the laundry room) to the top (working down from the roof). They found that it was completely blocked with lint, and removed buckets of lint from the pipe. Without their cleanout, I would have been facing a danger of fire. Not only am I totally satisfied with the high quality of the job that Jeremy and Sol performed, and the care with which they performed that work, I am very impressed by the care they took to keep me in the loop during their work. They were immensely respectful of me and my house, and were careful to explain what they were doing at each step and why. They also showed me the consequences at each step, including the state of the vent before cleaning and the amount of lint removed from both the top of the pipe and the bottom. I found all this very reassuring. The cost of the job was a flat rate of $199. I am not sure if this is high or low, compared to other companies, but I have learned -- in life -- that if you want quality then you have to pay for it. So, I am happy with the price. I know from prior experience with this company that they stand behind their work 100%, which is something that I value. Finally, I would say that both Jeremy and Sol were just fine and decent guys -- folk that I was pleased to invite into my home and whom I felt I could trust to do their work promptly and well. I would have them -- and Bellows Plumbing -- back into my home at any time. This is a company that knows its job, employs good competent folk and wants to deliver a quality service. Exactly what the customer needs!!! Thank you, Bellows, I will certainly call on you again, if and when I have my next problem with plumbing and the like. I recommend Bellows Plumbing very highly indeed.

    California Fresh Air
The people were a pleasure to have in my home. They did an excellent job. They explained many things about how a furnace works and told me about how I could better help my allergies. I had bought the service as one of the Angie specials and I think that the price I paid was fair. The non special price would have been far too much.

    Affordable Heating & Air
Seems to have gone well! Couple of things which would be helpful for me is to have seen the amount of lint removed from the ductwork to ascertain how effective the cleaning was, and if they would have some sort of camera scope so I could inspect the ducttwork to see how clean it was after service. Did I ask? No, because I thought of this after they had departed. But also they did not offer. I think it would be a good idea for them to offer. But of course I can tell that some cleaning had occurred because my dryer dries clothes more quickly and thoroughly now. So I'm satisfied with the work performed.
I did obtain 3 price estimates before agreeing to use Affordable. One was $159 from a company in San Jose, and one was $149 from Sears Home Service (who had prices for ducts under 30 ft or over 30 ft.--mine). The owner of Affordable came out to do the cost estimate prior to scheduling work. He quoted me the $175 price. I asked him: and quot; What do you do that Sears doesn't to justify the price difference?and quot; (which I thought was a perfectly reasonable question). The owner became defensive and could not answer the question. I would've thought he'd have gotten that question many times before and would be prepared with a standard answer which would convince me he offered a better value.
Despite this, I decided to use Affordable because my neighbor with the same ductwork configuation as mine had used him, and she said they did a good job for her. Angie's list had no references for any other local services, including Sears. So I told him I'd like to go ahead and use him, and he said they would schedule for about 2 weeks out and that someone would call me to schedule. No one did. I had to call back to schedule an appointment. Needless to say, I was a bit worried after this scenario that the job would go well. But in fact it did. The two guys who came out to do the job were punctual and got to work right away and completed the job quickly and efficiently.

    Environmental Pure Air
I purchased a Big Deal on Angies List for vent duct cleaning. I know there have been scams involved with vent duct cleaning, so I was happy to see a deal through Angies List, which I assumed meant it would be legit.

Prior to purchasing the Big Deal, I called the company and discussed what the service included and ensured they offered service in my area. The lady I spoke with on the phone was very professional and sounded very knowledgeable. As soon as I purchased the deal, I scheduled my appointment via email and received a call the day prior to confirm. It sounded like a legit operation and thus far very professional. The crew arrived within the scheduled time frame and started promptly.

The crew was a team of three, including one guy who appeared to be the lead and did most of the talking. The other two guys did all of the work. One of the crew members asked me to show him all of the vents, while I walked him around the house and showed him all of the registers, the lead guy called me down to the furnace. He preceded to explain that my furnace was filthy and removed a clump of dirt from the fan. He told me I should pay them an extra fee to clean the furnace. He also told me my filter was dirty.

Normally I wouldnt have given this a second thought, however I just had the furnace and filter cleaned a week prior and personally watched the repair man work on my furnace. I watched him clean the fan and motor assembly. When I told the lead this and asked him to show me where he found the dirt in my furnace, be became very argumentative and rude - accusing me of lying about when my furnace was cleaned. He then told me without cleaning the furnace and intake, there was no point in having my ducts cleaned - showing me how the air comes into my furnace (he was wrong and obviously does not have a lot of training in HVAC).

I told him the service included intake and duct cleaning and thats what I wanted - he argued that the intake was not included and was extra. He told me, rather rudely, to call the company and they would confirm.

When I asked about the video inspection, which was also advertised to be included, he got even more argumentative and told me if I wanted it, hed do it. But had forgotten to inspect the ducts prior to cleaning them. The camera had about a three foot lead and was completely worthless. I could have stuck a digital camera down each of my registers and conducted the same video inspection.

Ultimately, the crew left, leaving me with bent register (they over tightened it), a brand new furnace filter which was now dirty from where the lead guy tossed dirt on it, and a complete waste of my money and more importantly time. I also had to open my furnace and vacuum the area where the leads guy said he found dirt (needless to say the fan around this area was spotless - makes you wonder where he got that dirt!).

I called and spoke with the manager/owner of the company, Ben, who was overall apologetic and offered to refund my money. However, I think this company is a scan and will use the well documented bait and switch routine customers. Checkout the Date Line episode on duct cleaning and youll see what I just described!

    Chimney Clean Company
Both the chimney cleaning and the dryer duct cleaning went smoothly. The service personnel were consistently cheerful, polite and professional. They arrived punctually, immediately began to work, and stuck to it until they were done. They informed me of what they were doing each step of the way, and were really clean.
