Excavating reviews in Santa Barbara

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • We hired Burke to regrade a small section of our land. He came out and gave us a free estimate of the cost of the work and was up front about the scope of the work. His prices seemed reasonable compared with other estimates. The project took four days and Burke was there each day from 8AM to 4PM to personally handle all the work. We couldn't recommend Burke more highly. He is a man of real integrity; dependable and professional on all counts. I'd certainly hire him again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others.

  • Burke MIller was great!  Even during the estimate process he paid careful attention to details such as the grading and how the flow of water was going to be maintained after the pool was filled in.  This careful attention led to a solid plan that he explained in detail.  He was very careful when entering and exiting our yard to not damage a raised planter bed that he had to drive over many times with his equipment.  He performed the work very quickly and each day he would explain what was done, what he found an any slight adjustments that had to be made.  He provided several invoices that split the payment up based on the work performed.  He also took care of all the permitting and arranging for inspections etc.
I would not hesitate to recommend Santa Barbara Bobcat for any demo/grading work.

  • Over three days he took 12 hours in an excavator to remove 8.5 loads of dirt/grass in the dump truck and 1 dump truck load of concrete. Burke was very professional and gave me daily updates in writing telling me about the progress of the job and what to expect the next day. Would definitely use him again.

  • They had the best solutions to the unique problems that my place had regarding venting and drainage.  Now one month later, they are still answering my landscaping questions that relate to the foundation.  I highly recommend this company for their price, innovative solutions, and the follow up.

  • I had mold in my house and I hired to him to fix the issue of drainage around the north side of my home. This was to be a french drainage system. This job went terribly wrong. He took my money and had another big job so he ended put me on the back burner.  I was constantly looked over and always had different excuses.  He states that in july the drainage is 85% done but that was not the case and other professionals highly disagreed and expressed that I should not pay any more money till the job is complete. I have had other contractors out for other reasons and they were explaining to me that this work is not to par and that I was being over charged. He had a very large ditch dug around the north face of my home which we had to step or jump over to get access to 5 entry ways, and I had to insist he come out to fix the issues. He came out and put boards over the large ditch so nobody would be hurt. This was after he started the job in june and didn't correct this issue until november. I had to threaten to sue him to get him to come out to put the boards over the ditch for a temporary fix for safety reasons. I feel like he was in over his head with work and because of this I am out money.  He did not to the job properly or to my expectations. Finally I just had do dismiss him from any more services. I am still addressing standing water with further construction.

  • The actual hook up seems to have been done correctly.  The work site was a residential front yard.  The job took longer than expected because of mechanical problems of their equipment.  Our biggest complaint is that while we were out of town, the company brought in and used , in our opinion, unclean fill dirt from their workyard that is totally inappropriate for a residential front yard.
While there was no expectation to be given planting soil for backfill, it is really disappointing to find that the soil is such a heavy clay that water pools on it for days.  Furthermore, there are sizeable chunks of asphalt and concrete debris mixed in with this really heavy heavy clay.  Nothing will grow in this stuff and it is like the La Brea Tar Pits if you try to walk on it when it is wet.
The company will not rectify the situation and contractually they likely would not need to, however, it seems contrary to good business practice to create an additional landscaping expense for a customer by using backfill material that renders the area unusable for its original purpose (a lawn)!
We present this as a cautionary description to future customers of County Sanitation in hopes that some specification for type of backfill be made up front and that  vigilance be practiced by the property owner throughout the process.  We will be wiser in the future.

  • He works very hard, he's very good at checking his work with us and he has excellent workers. They didn't damage or ruin anything. They follow through and they have a good price.

  • Called Burke, came over within 24 hrs, shot grade to see what could be done, came up with plan, started work in 5 days, completed work in 3 1/2 days.
