    Unique Home Design & Remodeling
We had a great experience with Unique Home Design & Remodeling! Our involvement with them was because they remodeled our kitchen and bathroom. We wanted to share this review because the total price for the work was good and the communication was good. During the work, we were able to contact David and he was available to for us. David and the crew were professional and did hardworking people. We felt very comfortable with them at the house also when we were out of the house for work of with our kids. We absolutely recommend them and we will hire them again if needed.

I did not like it. I never even received the model of the kitchen. They really didn't want anything to do with me when I told them I do not want to pay $60,000. He said he was going to do a 3-D model. Someone called three days later to say they were going to send the model to my email and they didn't. It was way over priced. He was a few minutes late. They are going to try and up sell you on stuff that you do not want. The first thing he did was come in and did and showed my high prices, and tried to get me to spend $60,000 before he showed me anything.

    SOD Home Group
I hired SOD builders to perform a big remodeling project at my house that includes: - Full kitchen remodeling. - Demolition and remove all the exciting cabinets in the kitchen. - Counter tops that included the kitchen island as well. - Wood floors all around the dining and living areas and ceramic tiles all around the kitchen. - Brand new stainless steel appliances (Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Stove and range hood. - Upgraded electrical switches and outlets includes lighting fixtures in the kitchen. - Installed GFI outlets all around the house where needed. - Backsplash with custom design. - New tile floor in kitchen. - Relocate gas lines in the kitchen for the new placement of the stove. - Water line for the new refrigerator. - Built and installed custom cabinet with matching drawers fronts. - Under mount sink in the kitchen and few sinks in the bathrooms. - Faucets for the Kitchen and bathrooms. - Installed handles for cabinets. - Paint the kitchen and dining area with special paint design and texture. - Paint the bedrooms, dining room walls and ceilings. I selected SOD builders form the other 4 companies that I spoke and met with because my meeting with Oren and his ideas about what I can do and the price that I was able to get from him the was better than the other ones. When I called SOD to schedule a meeting, the lady that I spoke with was very nice, helpful and she was able to provide me with a great help and resource about this type of a project. We met with Oren and another person (Avi) and they were very down to earth kind of people and really knew what they were talking about. It started when I only wanted to remodel my kitchen and to break some walls in order to get an open space feeling. Oren was able to provide me with few options that worked very well with my budget. In the second meeting that I had with them, Oren brought a 3D design of how it will look. The design was very helpful and I start talking about other things that I can do as well besides the kitchen. After I hired Oren and his crew, Oren scheduled a starting date for the remodeling project and they start the work on the day and time. The work was completed after 6 weeks, as he promised to me. During the entire work, I got a daily report from Michelle, the project manager. She updated me on a daily basis regarding the work process. On top of that, Oren helped me to get all the materials that the project needed and his crew was beyond top notch, highly skilled and professional, polite and most important, they left the house each day clean (as clean as construction site could be). I have a beautiful kitchen , bathrooms and dining area and I am very happy with the results.

    Everlast Construction
I was called by Everlast Construction after apparently filling out a form online. I invited them in to give an estimate, but I shouldn't have. It should have been a huge red flag when they asked if my husband was going to be there. He doesn't have time. Anyway, Alex came to the door and he kept asking about my husband, which I found very offensive. He kept trying to tell me how expensive everything was going to be. When I told him we were on a budget, he told me they do everything high end and that we were looking at well over $100,000 for a simple kitchen remodel (no reconfiguration, no walls taken down) and a renovation of a small in-law unit. We live in Richmond. If we were to put well over $100,000 into our house, it wouldn't give us well over $100,000 in equity, simply because our house is already in fairly good shape and we just bought it.
Before even giving us an estimate, he tried pressuring me to sign a loan application and give him cash down. At that point, I asked him to leave. All I am doing right now is collecting bids. Once we have all the bids, we will decide on a contractor. Everlast won't be that contractor, though.

UPDATE: Alex did not give a quote. He didn't even take measurements, or for that matter, ask me what I wanted. He might have spent almost an hour here, but his entire purpose was to close the deal without even giving a quote or share any ideas. He was by far the pushiest contractor I've met. He might as well sell used cars.

    Palazzo Kitchens and Baths
I'm so glad I found Palazzo Kitchens and Baths! I interviewed and got bids from several companies and no one really "got" what I was trying to do. They all wanted to just replace what was already there, when I needed a complete overhaul. Palazzo had the tile and fixtures I wanted in their showroom and Jerry and Paulo were patient in helping me make choices. I had already picked out vanities and my tub from other sources and they worked with me on that. They accepted delivery for my tub so it wouldn't have to be in my tiny garage for months. And they picked up the vanities from my retailer. I had wanted to swap the bath and shower areas, but Jerry advised against that and it was the right decision. It took awhile to start work (original estimate was mid-September, but it didn't start until late November), but I wasn't on a strict timeline. When work started, Bryan and Daniel were fabulous! They took down a wall and interior doors from my horrendous chopped up Jack and Jill plan bathroom and opened it up completely! When they worked on the one wall that needed to stay, Bryan found a way to open the previous doorway to the ceiling and made it MUCH wider, giving me the open feeling without ruining the structural integrity. He lined up all of the interior jogs in the walls, so that no everything is straight and there are no more unnecessary corners. The tiling was next. Pablo headed the tiling team. It took a long time, but it turned out great. I even changed my mind about the tiling in the shower niche and they changed it without a blink. Bryan came back in and got the tub, vanities and fixtures done in record time, finishing the bathroom in 4 weeks instead of the estimated 5!!!! It isn't completely finished though as I don't have my shower door yet. Somehow that part is really delayed. I've been using everything though and I LOVE MY NEW BATHROOM! It's perfect! And came out on budget even with changes (thanks to my Angies List discount).

They weren't able to find the proper shower valve, so we can't control the water pressure from the shower. The leak wasn't coming from the valve. They had torn out a wall. They also tore out part of the kitchen ceiling so that is exposed now. After the first week, he had another job to do and was going to come back the following week to finish the work. Two weeks later, he came back on Monday, June 10th, to work on more projects and kept saying he "needed more money" and that one of his associates was sick and needed more help. He was supposed to come back Tuesday and his associate Bob, had a plumbing emergency. He was supposed to come back again today and kept demanding more money and has not been back since that time. He still hasn't finished the job. He's damaged my carpeting in 8-10 spots. He left dirt downstairs and didn't clean up after himself. The linoleum tech tried to steal some of my linoleum. He kept saying something about "insurance fees" for his associates and that he needed the money to pay for that and that would "take care of the job". He was demanding money for people who weren't there to do the job. He's done nothing but lie to me and not show up and hasn't done all the work.

He price was very fair. I would have received a 10% discount. His work was going to take a little longer. However, he was a really nice person. I did not hire him because I was already using someone to remodel my kitchen. I thought it would be easier to complete them simultaneously. I also had to choice my own materials verses the other provider who selects the materials for you.

We just want to recommend the following:

    1) Be sure you receive a detailed, itemized listing of all work to be performed including all materials to be purchased. Be sure the materials list indicates product information including sizes and quantities ordered. In the event of necessary changes or substitutions you will be aware of changes to the cost and/or end result of the project. (Example, we actually lost storage space in our small 10' x 10' kitchen due to loss of drawers, loss of a large corner cabinet, shallower cabinets and less shelving than we had previously. The cost did not change.) Maybe what I should say is that you may want to separately consult with a designer if you want to consider space utilization or changes to your basic configuration.
    2) Be sure to check the work being done, as it is being done. During our initial contract meeting/discussion and signing, we had asked for and were promised extra thick under padding (cork specifically) to be installed under the carbonized, strand bamboo flooring they were installing. However, what they installed under one third of our kitchen floor was two sheets of paper-thin and quot;paddingand quot;. We contacted the Project Manager and it was promptly corrected.
    3) Verify that the workers sent are skilled craftsmen, not unskilled laborers. The first workers sent were unskilled, unprofessional, thoughtless, disrespectful, and did sloppy/messy work. They screwed directly through our new Canadian Maple cabinets on all the rails without pre-drilling. This split the wood on each cabinet and they had to be removed, repaired and re-hung. In addition the cabinet over the sink was not lined up over the sink. It was three inches off center and needed spacers added to correct. However, when installing the second time, the workers chose the worst part of the pieces of wood purchased for the splitters so that the dark marks and blemishes in that part of the wood ended up right in front of the sink so anyone standing at the sink or looking at the cabinets couldn't help but see it. Worst of all, the cabinets were hung crookedly so that the bank of cabinets on our main wall ended up approximately three inches lower on the left side than on the right. They explained that our ceiling was uneven and all they could do was bend a board on one side to try to make up the gap. (?)

They disconnected my husband's very complicated stereo equipment without asking, when it only needed to be unplugged. They left their tools, equipment and materials everywhere around our house when leaving for the day (or days) making it necessary for us to move boxes of bamboo, lots of baseboards, saws, sanders, drills, glue buckets, etc., etc., (my husband and I are both in our 60's) just to be able to walk through the house or try to get any work done in preparation of all our rooms needing to be emptied to put in the new floors. (We also have no garage or carport...) which everyone knew before we started. And perhaps the most offensive was their habit of throwing their garbage in front of our house each day after thet ate their lunch. The garbage can was less than 8 ft. away.
That was it. We called the Prioject Manager to complain again, this time insisting they be replaced. He appologized profussley and assigned a new person to complete the work.
This time they sent an excellent Craftsman named Gregory. His work was beautiful. He replaced the splitters much differently than before, re-hung the cabinets (somehow the ceiling is no longer crooked!). They really look beautiful now. Gregory also finished laying our floors and doing some minor painting. He was professional, courteous, fast, efficient, conscientious and skilled.
The end result is absolutely beautiful and we are thrilled in how everything turned out. We just wish it hadn't been so hard getting here.

    Duracite Manufacturing

Duracite recently completed the remodel of my master bath and powder room.  The workmanship on the granite is truly beautiful.  The Duracite employees did an exceptional job; they were prompt, neat, and polite and are true craftsmen.

Duracite is a one-stop-shop.  I not only selected the granite at the shop, but also ordered the cabinets, plumbing fixtures, glass shower doors and sinks through them.  It was a pleasure doing business with Duracite and when I am ready I will have them do my second bathroom.
