    FOUR SEASONS LAWN AERATION INC.
No one was home and the work was done. The rep put the following note on the bill that was left: "Suggest a dethatch grass to thick aeration is pointless if you can't pull cores." I called and read the note to the receptionist and explained that if the aeration was pointless, the work shouldn't have been done and they should have contacted me first. She agreed and said that someone would contact me. The next day I had a voicemail from the owner that they do dethatching in the spring. I included a copy of the note with my payment and noted that I wasn't happy, but the work was done and I paid the bill.

    California Smartscape
Overall, it went great. We waited a year to write this review because we wanted to see how everything held up, in case there might be any issues that arose after the initial install. Among the firms we interviewed, California Landscape was the most flexible in trying to meet our budget goals while also meeting our overall design intent. Their professional landscape designer, Jesse, did an excellent job listening to our high-level intent and our ideas, as well as contributing his own suggestions. His cost proposal(s) were thorough and included options that we could potentially subtract in order to stay within budget. He delivered beautiful color 3D design drawings that included pictures of proposed plants. Key element of the new design were (1) replacing all concrete with pavers, (2) removing rock that covered the front "lawn" & side gardens and replacing it with more tropical looking gardens, (3) removing the wood deck and installing a 2-tiered paver patio, (4) removing the Bermuda grass and replacing it with artificial turf., and (5) removing a palm tree that was blocking lake views. After the design was signed off, construction was planned. Construction began roughly on time and went largely as planned, although the project took a couple of weeks longer than the original 4 week schedule. We were well informed of each step and each day's and week's plans. Crews were efficient and courteous. The project manager, Leo, was diligent, although he was managing a large number of jobs (more than we expected), so he wasn't on-site quite as often or for as long as we were originally expecting. As any issues arose (either as noted by California Landscape or by ourselves), they were openly discussed and quickly resolved. Some resulted in slight cost increases, others resulted in slight decreases. We felt pricing of any changes was fair and California Smartscape was very straightforward to deal with. They were very professional and we had no major conflicts. At the end of construction, the resulting landscaping looked beautiful, although obviously many of the plants were still quite small and hadn't grown in yet. We received many compliments right away from people who saw the front & side landscaping. We also received many compliments from people who saw our rear landscaping (the house is on a lake and boaters frequently pass by our back year). We were delighted with the way it looked. The only significant glitch that we ran into for the construction part of the project had to do with a railing that we wanted on the raised rear 2-tier paver patio. Although we technically didn't need a railing because of the height of the decks, we wanted one. California Landscaping was not willing to take on the railing portion of the project themselves, but they said they could refer us to a railing contractor who could provide what we wanted. Unfortunately, when the recommended railing contractor showed up, he passed on the railing project because it was not a simple type that he only does. California Landscaping was unable to help us at all once the railing contractor punted, so we were left on our own to source it. That turned out to be problematic. We eventually got it done, but the railing part took much longer than we wanted and it cost quite a bit more than we had planned on. The final result looked great and turned out great, but the railing part of the whole process was painful. The railing aspect of the project was another reason why we delayed our Angie's list review - we didn't want to provide a review until the full project was completed - including the railing. Then the heavy, heavy rains came in the winter of 2017. It was a good opportunity to see how the full landscaping (installed in the spring & summer of 2016) would hold up. We had a 1-yr warranty so we were still well within the warranty period when the winter rains came. Well, the rains prompted some settling of part of the raised 2-tier deck, which caused a section of pavers to tilt upward. The deck area also puddled significantly due to the settling. So, we pointed out the quality problem to California Smartscape. The company owner, Robert, came out to inspect it himself and immediately committed to repairing it back to new. Cost was never discussed, but the repair was done without any cost to us. A couple of weeks later crews were dispatched to repair the paver deck settling problem and they did an absolutely first class job at the repair. It looks brand new and we're confident that the settling problem won't recur. The company held up to their high standard of quality from design, to construction, to any subsequent fixes that were needed later on. We would (and have already) highly recommend California Landscape.

    A Passion For Gardening
Can't say enough good things about Pedro Yanez and Passion for Gardening. Pedro is a wonderful designer as well as having an excellent knowledge of what will help each plant thrive. He cleared away all the weeds and anything unwanted. Filled in earth and fertilized wherever needed. Removed two dead trees and pruned the others to ensure enough sun for grass. Set up an irrigation system both spray and drip all on timers. Lay sod. Put in a row of hedge by the street to provide privacy. And put in a beautiful border with a wide variety of water wise plants. Pedro honored the two vouchers we had purchased through Angies List, and his prices were so reasonable for the items where we went over that we would have been glad to pay full price. His work added enormously to our houses value. Overall, he is a pleasure to work with.

    A Passion For Gardening
I got the area around the mobile home cleaned up, bushes trimmed, weeds pulled. That was all relatively satisfactory except I hate what they did to one of 2 bushes - not at all graceful although it followed my general direction --I did not like that bush was fully covering front window. I really wanted it moved but was told that moving it wold cost me an additional $1000 which I thought outrageous. So they trimmed it with a flat top - very unbecoming. Yes it no longer covered any part of the window. I was surprised that my whole 8 hours were used up in the clean up for such a small area.

    Plantscape
Bryan and his son were great to work with. VERY responsive, reasonably priced (had two other bids that were more...), showed up on time (or early) and did a great job. Overall, very satisfied (in fact, our neighbor hired him on the spot for a job after seeing the work that he had done on our place).

    Alfredo's Gardening Services
I don't know what everybody else charges. I've heard so many people pay less and I pay him extra, but he works really hard. I pay him $185 per month. I don't know when he is going to be here sometimes.

    Down Under Services
Started off well by actually calling to say would be late at first (see the property to bid) apmt.  I appreciated the timely heads up. Communicates well.  We came to agreement of $790 for the job entailing 3 men to work about 8 hours,
and scheduled the work to be done a couple of weeks later.  I was pleased to receive an official quote by email, with explicit terms.  Replied with clarification.  Oscar replied, yes he had forgotten that.  Also his understanding had been that the above ground pool would be discarded, but actually the previous residents wanted to have it.  Oscar said it would be more work to dismantle it for reuse rather than just tear it down, and suggested that I ask the pool owners to pay the $60 more it would cost.  It was agreed.  I signed and email-returned the contract. Oscar emailed to remind me they would arrive in the morning at 7 am. They arrived about 7:15 and worked hard and wisely! (Extremely hot and humid day!)  Oscar said the pool owner came by and decided to discard the pool after all.  The job was finished in under 8 hours.  Well done!
I discussed with Oscar the possibility of his team doing our regular gardening on a weekly basis.  We came to agreement.
We are also looking forward to planning the redesigning of the landscaping.
I was surprised to be asked for a check at the completion of the job, since my recollection of the contract terms had specified that an invoice would be sent, to be paid by mail (or credit card if arranged in advance).  In fact, I just now received the emailed invoice (with a balance due of $0).  No problem though, just surprised.
I highly recommend Down Under Services performed by Oscar and his team.

    R&N Landscaping
The work that "Remigio Nicholas" did when we first hired them was great. Unfortunately it didn't last long. They claim on their business card to be "Your #1 source for excellent landscaping," and while they do okay with one-time jobs, they are terrible at doing routine yard maintenance. They are never consistent in which part of the yard they decide to pay attention to. They always cut the lawn, but when it comes to trimming the shrubs they often let things go way past the point where they look unruly. Also, if you like your yard a certain way, like your trash cans in a specific spot, they never leave things where they found them. What's worse, they tend to leave trash in your yard or empty water bottles in your yard waste trash cans. Their unprofessionalism is a bit ridiculous, and it's the reason I decided to join Angie's list. The worst offense happened today whenI had them aerate the lawn, something they were supposed to have done a couple months ago. When speaking with Remigio on the phone he agreed to come do the work. He mentioned renting the equipment but never said it would cost us a dime beyond what we regularly pay them to maintain the yard. So you can imagine my surprise when he told me it would be $140 when they were done! I explained that he should have told me how much it would cost to do the work before starting, and that in the future he should always do this. I also said if I'd known it would cost us that I would have done it myself the old fashioned way (i.e. without a machine). Despite my explaining my concerns 3 or 4 times in different words, he never apologized; he just rationalized. In his mind he thought saying he had to rent equipment should have been sufficient to tell me I would have to pay for it. Uh how about no? So we paid him what he asked, but I'm beyond finished with R&N Landscaping. I'm better off doing the work myself and cutting unprofessionalism out of the equation.

    Plantscape
We purchased a Big Deal coupon for 4 hours of landscaping labor from Plantscape.  The service and professionalism was great.  The owner called the day after my purchase to schedule an appointment and the landscaper showed up right on time.  He was efficient and did a great job transforming my small overgrown yard into a neat, relaxing space.  He still had some time left after cleaning up my yard and (without my asking) proceeded to trim some overgrown leaves off the tree near my back gate (which is maintained by my HOA).  I was very pleased with Plantscape's service overall.

    Huerta Landscape & Maintenance
Huerta landscaping did a great job of assessing my problem. They provided a solution and went to work immediately. The cost was very reasonable for the work they performed. I will be using him for. all my future landscape work. AAA contractor who is honest and professional.
