    Roy Miller Brickwork
The work feels half done. Some spaces were left open even though we specifically called them out to be fully closed. Showed up late several times. 2 breathing vents were supposed to be rebuilt and reattached, but he never returned to put them in. He showed photos of his work, several were simply of the same corner from different angles. Only half of the crawl space was done. He kept adding to his price as he went along.

    We are very disappointed overall.

    Philips Remodeling
Philips Remodeling was one of four contractors I interviewed to work on my home.  My wife and I picked Ben because we felt that he was the most friendly, respectful, and knowledgeable contractor we met.  We showed all the contractors a huge crack in the living room of our newly purchased home and Ben was the only contractor that took the time to go up into the attic to find out what the last owner did wrong.  Ben was also one of two contractors that took the time to take all the measurements he needed for the quote.  He showed us sincerity and a genuine desire to earn our business.  He submitted a bid to us within two days with a proposal that described in detail the work proposed, price (listed in line items), work schedule, and payment schedule.
The work was scheduled to be completed in 30 days and it went over by one day.  I told Ben that my wife and I will be living through the construction and we were pleasantly surprised at how smooth the process was.  Every day Ben and his partner Chris would completely seal off the construction side of the house and did everything in their power to keep the noise level at a minimum.  They had to take out two walls, shore up the supports of the 1945 kitchen floor,  and rip out a ton drywall.  Despite the mess from the demo, Chris and Ben cleaned up on a daily basis which included vacuuming, throwing out the trash, and organizing all their tools.  My father was a general contractor and I worked for him throughout my summers in high school and college.  I must say that I have never soon a job site as clean as the one Ben kept in my home.
My biggest compliment for Ben was his communication.  I received daily updates of the construction.  No change order was ever made without consulting either me or my wife.  In return, my wife and I also communicated to him if we made any changes of our own.  There were a few days when my wife worked from home and Ben did everything he can to make sure his construction process did not disturb her.
It is refreshing to work with a contractor that is so professional and talented in his craft.  Even though my wife and I made all the decisions on the design of the reno, Ben would give his professional opinion on how to make certain designs better and more efficient.  It is also evident in their professionalism when they had to go underneath the crawl space to put in supports to level the kitchen floor.  Chris, Ben's partner, is at least 6' 2".  He would go down into he crawl space in what must have been a monumental challenge maneuvering himself.  For some reason there are a lot of coal underneath my home.  Chris and Ben would come out of the crawlspace looking like coal miners and they would stand there laughing with me about how dirty they look.  I admire their ability to laugh at themselves even though it must have been a very challenging process to level my kitchen floor.
Ben also took the helm in making sure all the inspections were scheduled on time throughout the construction.  He would always give me an update on the inspector's comments and let me know if any changes needed to be made.  My wife and I could not be happier with the results of our reno.  Ben took us on a complete and detail walkthrough of the house to make sure nothing was missed.  From the beginning I told Ben that he can contact me anytime if he needed my input.  I understand that any client/contractor relationship is a two-way street.  We could not be happier about making the decision to hire Philips Remodeling.  Ben never stack jobs, so he will completely focused on your job from start to finish.  Anyone who has seen the photos of our completed reno would comment that it looks like a photo from a magazine.  Feel free to check the photos yourself on Ben's website at  We are currently the first 7 photos.  I have recommended Ben to several friends and I will definitely call him again when I save enough for my bathroom reno.

    Roy Miller Brickwork
Roy reviewed all the work in advance with an ear to what was in keeping with the current style of the home. He was on time with an experienced assistant. He went beyond the specified repair to make the job look good. He was able to tie the new work into the existing work very effectively and seamlessly. Questions were handled easily because he has outstanding skills in his field.

DNA's Clean Sweep Chimney Service & More
Two guys came right on time of appointment. They were very professional and gave a pretty thorough inspection. Options were given for different methods and prices to rebuild chimney (the chimney was broken).

    Roy Miller Brickwork
Despite a few stalls because of the rain, the job went extremely well. Roy also did some extra work and charged very little for that. He also spoke to our insurance adjuster which facilitated us getting some of the work paid for by the insurance company. The workmanship was exceptional and we have gotten many compliments on the work.

    Vargas Landscaping
The owner of this company is Nato, a native of my father's home state in Mexico, Zacatecas. I called Nato and asked for an estimate twice. Once because I needed a fence rebuilt and once because I wanted my patio done. Both times, Nato was very professional and helpful. He came up to the East Bay from the peninsula, was on time for the estimate appointment and got back to me very quickly with the estimate. His estimate was not the cheapest, but still fair. I ended up going with a cheaper estimate but the other contractor took a long time to finish and did not pay attention to detail. For my next landscape need, I will hire Nato.
