Each time I leave this office, I tell myself that I will never return. For some reason I kept giving Dr. Owen a chance but time after time I am disappointed. Here's the worst of my experiences: The Dr. diagnosed me with an STD prior to even waiting for the blood results to cross his desk. He was sure I had a virus and prescribed me medication immediately. I took the medication and after a week I had horrible crushing pains in my chest. I happened to be traveling for my job, and went to different doctor to find out what had gone wrong. He determined that it was due to the medication prescribed that I was feeling these crushing chest pains and told me to stop taking them immediately. Both he and I called Dr. Owen to inquire about the medication, and because Dr. Owen is nearly impossible to get a hold of, his assistant relayed the message that I should most definitely continue taking the medication to finish the treatment despite the pain! I was shocked. There's much more...
Two weeks later I called to follow-up. Again, Dr. Owen is not available. His assistant explained that they had received the results of my blood test A WEEK EARLIER and I NEVER HAD THE VIRUS TO BEGIN WITH and never needed to take the medication that was caused me to seek emergency help. Despite the (negative) results being in, if I had not called to follow up, they would have never have notified me that I didn't have the virus. The whole while I was an emotional wreck because I thought I contracted an STD and I had to somehow explain it to my partner of 5 years. I was forced to ask: and ldquo; Why was I prescribed medication for an illness I did not have?and rdquo; and ldquo; Why did it take a second doctor to realize that the medication prescribed was the direct cause of these chest pains?and rdquo; and ldquo; Why was I ordered to continue to take the medication that was causing me extreme side-effects and pain for a disease I never had?and rdquo; and ldquo; Why wasn't I notified that did not have this disease to begin with, even after they has the results for TWO WEEKSand rdquo; Even if it WAS acceptable for the doctor to diagnose me based on a hunch (and not a blood test), I expect him to at least notify me that I had nothing to worry about as soon as he knew. It was an STD for god's sake! Again, Dr. Owen was not available to answer these questions. At a later appt for something else, I finally had Dr. Owen in person. He never once addressed the issue. I had to remind him of all that had happened and asked for an explanation. He said that the conclusion was that my results were negative, and that I therefore had nothing to worry about. No apology, and barely any eye contact.
