Chimney & Fireplace reviews in San Carlos

We had Dale Plumping and Heating come out to work on our gas fireplace in December. They seemed to fix it and were very friendly. However, as they were leaving I pointed out that one of the flames was weak. He agreed that it didn't look normal, looked into it, and then told me that a part was likely defective and we needed to replace it. He said he would call first thing the next morning to get the part, call us right after for an update, and come by as soon as he got the part to fix it-- even if it was a weekend. They charged us about $260 for this visit. Two days later, we hadn't heard from him so we called Dale. The woman we spoke to seemed annoyed and inconvenienced because she didn't know anything about the matter. We didn't hear back until the next day. Eventually the part arrived a week later so we called to schedule for him to replace it. We were told they couldn't get us in for another 2-3 weeks. So much for the "I will come by as soon as I get the part even if it's a weekend" statement. When they arrived a few weeks later, they stayed about 1.5 hours and charged us another $300. We noticed immediately after that it smelled a bit like gas. We were so exasperated by the whole ordeal that we sort of just ignored it as it wasn't that strong of a smell. Then, a month later, we went on vacation and all the windows and doors were obviously left shut. We came back, entered the house, and the smell of gas was overwhelming. Clearly there was an actual leak. We called Dale and asked about their guarantee-- they said we were just outside the window for their 30-day guarantee so they would not look at it for free. At this point, we weren't going to pay Dale another $300 to fix something that they did not properly fix the first time, so we asked our handyman to take a look since he is familiar with heaters, although he has never fixed a fireplace. Within about five minutes, he was able to locate the gas leak and discover that two parts had not been attached correctly by Dale and needed to be replaced. He went to Home Depot, bought the part, and fixed it by that afternoon for about $50 total. He doesn't even work on fireplaces and he was appalled that Dale left us with a substantial gas leak and broken part. So all in all, we spend close to $600 for Dale to come over, not fix it correctly and have me point it out, re-do what they did for a higher charge than the first time, and then leave us with a gas leak and broken fireplace.

Jeremy was on time, friendly and VERY clean. He explained everything and then recommended a new cap since the old one had blown into the chimney and rusted. He made arrangements for the new cap and clearly talked me through his assessment of the inspection. A few days later Geraldo and Edgar came to take care of the cap. I asked them to go back to remove some ugly foil from around the chimney and they happily went back up to take care of it. It was a great experience and I'd recommend highly.

My husband and I wanted to do a significant remodel to our home ? new kitchen, dining room, and balconies.? We met with several companies and Goodfellas had a competitive price and also came highly recommended.? The process took a few months, but we were kept very well informed every step of the process.? There was only one weekend when we had to move out of the house while the renovations were happening.? Overall ? I am happy with the communication and service that was provided.

I use Chim Chimney for my real estate business to clean and inspect the fireplaces & chimneys on my listings. They provide a written report and estimates if necessary. They explain any repairs that should be made. They have always been thorough, honest and complete the work in a timely manner.  When required, we have scheduled the repairs that are needed.  They have always been fairly priced.

Purchased Ortal TS40 fireplace on July 7, 2014, paid in full at time of purchase.  Agreement was to make arrangement for pickup from Ortal warehouse in Los Angeles area in a few months.  Called to make arrangements in September but unit was not available.  I was going to be in the LA area again in late December 2014.  Emailed twice, called at least 10 times attempting to coordinate a pickup address and time.  I could never receive a date or address from Samantha.  Finally on 12/17/14 I talked to Patty and she apologized and said she would have it drop shipped first week in January to my home.  I called back on 1/9/2015 and was told the shipping company should have already contacted me.  Called back on 1/19/2015, Sam said she would have the shipping company call me.  I informed her this was my last contact before filing a complaint.  I attempted to contact Chris (the owner) on 2/3/2015 but was unable.
I just want the fireplace I purchased and paid for delivered.
I am currently out $5800 with nothing but a receipt in my hand and no fireplace.

Inspector was very professional and friendly. The report was very detailed. The quote was scarily expensive! (We have dryrot affecting one of the support beams to the house, and a rotted deck that needs to be demolished and rebuilt. In addition, we asked for quotes on voluntary seismic upgrades--shear walls.)
Due to some vacation in their office, and potentially the scale of our potential repairs, the report was delayed significantly compared to the estimated time they gave. However, they remained in contact throughout, updating me on the progress.

The fellow showed up on time and replaced the chimney cap quickly and effortlessly.  It blew off again a couple of weeks ago.
I decided to ask for chimney inspections since this was an expert.  I did not feel the inspection report was clear and concise.  At once he said that everything was fine but then added that I should consider having additional service performed if I wanted to actually use the fireplaces.
He was a nice guy but I wouldn't use again.

ABA has a showroom store in downtown San Carlos which makes it easy to browse their selection and also have a face-to-face conversation.  I used the face-to-face  opportunity to discuss their quote which was double of any other quote I received.  The salesman showed an invoice order of all the materials and labor. The main difference was their quote included a rebuild of the firewall which other shops only listed patching of the firewall. I agreed that rebuilding was the way to go.  I negotiated for a 10% discount on price, but the salesman held firm at the initial quote. I accepted the quote and paid the 50% required down payment on Mar 9.  Then on Apr 20, the guys came to perform service. These guys are busy, and the 3-4 week wait is typical. The guys arrived on time, cleared any furniture around the chimney, laid down a tarp around the working area, and began work. The work lasted till around midday. After all work was performed, I was shown digital photos of the work done at the crown of the roof which are not easily accessible to me, and given instruction on how to work the combination rain cap, damper, and spark arrestor. The guys cleaned up, and hauled away any debris. Very professional.

He inspected our chimney and informed us that cracks were small enough they were nothing to worry about and we needed a spark arrester.  He was very quick, thorough and clean for what could have otherwise been a messy job.

We researched on Angie's List and  decided to go with Mister Chimney.
The team was on time and proceeded to promptly prep for the cleaning. They laid down blankets to protect the surrounding stonework and then moved in their equipment. One worker started cleaning from the bottom and Martin, the lead, went on our roof to perform the inspection, and I assume cleaning. I watched the person clean and scrub the entire fireplace interior with a brush and vacuum. The whole process took about 30 minutes and they thoroughly cleaned up the area before leaving.

I received the invoice for $120. I then mentioned that Angie's List members were suppose to receive 10% off and this was also confirmed by the office worker who booked the appointment.  Martin mentioned something about rates actually being higher but then agreed and changed the price to $108. At the end I received a written report and we discussed the results.

I painted (Stove Bright high temp paint) the interior without any problems and we've used the fireplace twice since. We would have used it more but there's been many "spare the air" days recently.
