Tom and his team were great! Very organized and upfront about time frame and costs. The workmanship was excellent. Attention to detail is superb! I would definitely use them again and would recommend them to friends and family!

    Carlson Construction
Beware new home builder of Carlson Construction and its proprietor Brett Carlson.  Brett came to us with good referral from a trusted source.  The contract originally called for substantially completing the construction of the new house in 12 months.  At 30 months, the project is only 3/4 finished.  At first, Brett was a hard and able Contractor.  He partially built a fine home for us when his personal troubles appeared and he indicated that he was starved for cash.  He started billing for extra expenses for work we did not want as well as sneak in extra charges for work that we did want.  We paid in advance for work that he would only complete part way and leave unfinished and in a nonfunctional state.  Anecdotally we discovered that he took on new construction jobs instead of finishing ours.
    The result so far:
It has been over 30 months and the house is still unfinished, still in a state that we cannot move in, and still in a state that will not pass the standards of the Art Jury required for all new construction in PVE.
His subcontractors came knocking at our door because he did not pay them.  We provided receipts to the subcontractors with proof of payment to the General Contractor in full for all the work the subcontractors did.  The checks written by the General Contractor bounced for one subcontractor and when the subcontractor contacted the General Contractor, the General Contractor lied and said that he would be happy if they put a lien on our house because he wasn't seeing any money either.
Sad as it is, the money problems of the proprietor of Carlson Construction do not make up for this poor and dishonest work ethic.  A complaint to the Contractors State License Board and a visit to our real estate attorney are the next steps we're looking to pursue.  We will update this review with further developments in the hopes that our experience will help future Angie's list members.

    NFC CONSTRUCTION TECH
We signed the contract on 2-July with a start date of July 12 and an estimated completion date of Sept. 30. ~11 weeks.
As work progressed the project fell ever further behind schedule. We were able to move back into the majority of the space on Nov 11 (17 weeks). We were able to start using the kitchen again a week later. At that point the remaining work was not more that 3-4 days of actual work and yet it was Jan 8 (25 weeks) that we got final inspection, and February 2 before the punch list items were finally completed.
The delays would not have been an issue had we seen steady progress on the job, but weeks would go by with only single day's work, or sometime no work at all. Even more irritating is that calls, emails, even text messages to find out the status would go unanswered.
There also seemed to be issues between Nick and his subcontractors. The cabinet maker showed up right after the framing was finished to measure.  When asked how long till they are finished the answer was 4 weeks. 3 weeks later he arrives to measure again (at this point the drywall is finally done) and asked again the answer is now "3 weeks". He finally arrives to start installing 4 weeks later, and the cabinets aren't finished until mid December a full month after he started installation.
Electricians were a similar story. They would show up and do a bunch of work (but not finish) and then weeks would go by before they would return to finish the job.
The form doesn't ask for a letter grade for "planning" but if there were one I would give Nick an "F". For example he failed order enough tile.  Not just once but three times leading to delays and otherwise unnecessary return visits by the tile setter.
In the end we are happy with the results. The workmanship is good and the price is right, but the delays and lack of communication were inexcusable.

    Brigada Builders Inc
We did a full remodeling of our house, down to the studs. This was the first time we did any kind of work let alone a full blown remodeling. We were able to rely on Brigada's experience and advises. They did give us good advices to best use our money to do a quality job. They are a team of very good craftsmen. They do a refine job. my husband is all about practicality , i am all about esthetics. Brigada was great in dealing with both my husband and I to make sure we were both happy. they were able to execute a lot of custom design that the architect or myself designed, like custom fireplace (2) and ceiling beam corniches and column that came out sooo pretty (in master bedroom and master bathroom). They really have hands of gold. They also have a very good specialist to do tile work. . i am so obsessed with details and quality (i work in the fashion industry which explains it!) and he did an impeccable work; the bathrooms and the kitchen looks so beautiful. it was always the same team of workers working on our house; we got to know them and we really like them. they were so helpful and kind. if i couldnot visualize somethig they would make mock up for me to see and decide what was best. Really nice and helpful people which was a very important feel good factor as this is our home they were working on!
My husband and I, both work full time and are not very reachable during business hours. Brigada was very flexible and easy to communicate with. we could call them early in the morning or late at night. They would send me email or text pictures so i could visualize things they were asking me to make decision on; so i could give them answers quickly and not slow down the momentum. when i wasn't sure, i could count on their guidance. they have a very good taste level which was very helpful when i had to pick molding, paint color etc... and if it did not look right , they didn't opt for the "cheaper" way of doing thing but they really aspire to do a quality job.
Regarding schedule, they were on a mission to beat the due date. they started work as early as our city permits and worked until 6pm when necessary as well as every saturday. this was really great because we could meet them on the jobsite every saturday or after work. Brigada is a partnership of 2 contractors that make a great team; that was a great advantage as it was always at least one of them on the jobsite - every day. that was very important.
our house is in Palos Verdes Estates which has a very demanding city and art jury. Brigada was very good in dealing with both our city and art jury which relieved a lot of stress for us. now that we are back in the house and as we see details or touch up that needs to be done, we call them and they come and do it without us having to "chase" after them. really easy. They are great. we made a great choice to have them remodel our house.

    Express Bathrooms And Kitchens
The job was completed before the estimated finish date. I didn't know if a bathroom complete remodel could be finished in such a short time but it really was. I hired them to start by taking out all the old fixtures, tub, toilet, shower, etc. Then they put in flooring, tile, drywall, fixtures, and custom cabinets and paint. My designer was happy to let Express Bathrooms and Kitchens do the material and design choices because they were experienced and highly qualified to do the design work as well.

    Servpro Of Palos Verdes
Initially I thought it went well, although I had doubts that for such a small area so many fans and dehumidifiers were truly needed. I expressed my concerns more than once and was told that all of this equipment was definitely needed. I recalled many years ago when we had a flood in the same area, but that flood was many times worse, and two, perhaps three at the most, fans / dehumidifiers were used (by a different company). Servpro fit in as many units as could possibly fit into the two areas affected - over ten pieces of equipment! Of course there is a charge for each unit each day of use.  Towards the end of the ordeal, a baseboard was removed. I asked why it was removed as we were nearing the end of the ordeal, as everything was about 99% dry, and I got a shrug of the shoulders. It made no sense, except monetarily for Servpro. I called to ask Servpro to replace the baseboard and was told I should do it. I very politely said that this was not acceptable and I would like a call back from the technician who removed it. I never got a call back from anyone - and the baseboard is still off (a couple of weeks later). I'll have to hire someone who is skilled at this, as I am not. When I got Servpro's bill for $2,300 I called and reminded them that I was promised that there would be an adjustment made to my bill, given my high insurance deductible. Nope, sorry, there will be no adjustment - despite what had been promised to me when I originally called Servpro and stated that I was considering using another company who clearly told me, "We'll work with you when it comes time to pay us, given your high insurance deductible." Servpro CLEARLY stated that they would do the same for me, but they CLEARLY WENT BACK ON THEIR WORD. That was enough to convince me to never use Servpro again, and to make me very, very suspicious the necessity for so many machines. Yes, they are the experts, they said, but please . . . This was way over the top and allowed them to run up as large a bill as possible. Servpro came highly recommended by my insurance company. I'm very sorry I didn't go with their competition.
