Locksmith reviews in Richmond

    El Sobrante Lock & Key
Needed all my locks to be rekeyed for my new home. After checking reviews and getting quotes from 3 different locksmiths, I decided to go with El Sobrante Lock and Key. Kyle was professional over the phone and clear about the price. Kyle arrived on time and did a fantastic job. I would definitely call them back in the future and I highly recommend them. They do match up to their review rating.

Nathan showed up on time on the same Saturday that I called, for rekeying the security door bolt lock, since we had lost one set of keys. He advised me to rekey the deadbolt on the inner, stouter door, and charged only slightly more. Excellent service!

Rob showed up on time, very responsive to my questions and concerns, examined the door, and fixed it. I appreciated his comments, in answer to my questions, on alternative (and more elaborate, more expensive and, as he pointed out, unnecessary) solutions to this door and another one.

    Magnolias Locksmith
There were additional fees for them to come out of the house. They didn't do a good job of informing me of the full amount of the charges. The price wasn't given upfront as much as it should have been. They did get the appointment quickly. He was good at what he did.

It didn't go that well. That is one of the things that stunted my progress. I was disappointed. That was my first time. I have had a subscription before and decided to take advantage of this new deal and so I  needed to have three doors with the same key.  I wanted my front door, my garage door and my laundry entrance door all with one key and I think the deal was for two doors. This guy later says he would the dead boly and exit garage door for minimal, which I didn't know what it was. It ended up costing me astronomical amount. This was April 7th when he came out. I ended up writing him a check for five locks and four keys. It turned me off. He told me I needed to pay him. At least he showed up and he was pretty fairly on time. I never had a problem with the locks though. It worked fine. The keys that he provided all worked fine. He was so responsive in terms of when I asked him things. He was punctual. I would absolutely not use him again.

Rob arrived on time with the replacement door (wood). He was experiencing some difficulty removing one of the hinge pins on the old door. After applying a liquid remedy he was able to overcome the problem. Rob removed the key lock and door handles before taking the door off its hinges. Rob measured the door frame again, using them he cut and shaved the replacement door. After placing the door in the door frame twice and making two minor cuts adjustments to fit. Rob hung the replacement door with a little adjustment. Rob then inserted the existing key lock and added the door handles were I wanted them. I asked Rob to secure my rear screen door. Rob added a pen lock to secure my screen door.

They charged us $600 to install a new lock that they said was better than what we had. He did quite well. He seemed to know what he was doing. The original lock had stopped working. He thought the lock my builder had installed was defective. He recommended a new brand. He seemed competent. I had to take his word for it. I asked for several new keys and to replace another lock with the same key. There are three locks in my house now with the same key. He installed all three locks and the new keys. I was surprised by the price. But you don't argue with a guy who seems to know what he's doing and makes keys for your house. I don't like that when you unlock the door from the outside you have to relock it when you come in. He came on-time.

    Rex Key Locksmith and Security
They are an old time locksmith and are extremely good. They can do pretty much anything. I run a second-hand business and we had a set of drawers with an individually keyed lock. Rex is the only place that can do those. In order to re-key it they have to be able to remove the device, but it is a banker's setup and the security to get into it is very difficult. Rex can do that. I had a friend that restored old jukeboxes and he said Rex is the only place that can make a key for an old jukebox. They have got licensed certified locksmiths and they are busy every day. They are great. I never have to take their keys back because they don't work. They are excellent.

Took multiple phone calls to get to someone to provide a quote.  Then told me it would cost me $80 trip fee to get a quote b/c I'm outside their service area.  The trip fee is reasonable, but given that they ultimately gave a free quote when I sent them pictures of the job, it would have been nice had they offered that option rather than me coming up with it.  Their quote for the labor was competitive, but their quote for the parts was ~50% higher than what I could get the lockbox & lock for online.  So I confirmed the parts I'd need to match the master key system I currently have, signed the contract with them, and then waited for the parts to come in.
Parts arrived from them, and for me, faster than expected, and they scheduled me in.  However, there was some miscommunication internally on the job, and when they showed up, they had only allotted enough people / time for one gate.  They came back a week later to complete the job for the second gate.
It turns out the lock that I ordered, even after confirming with them that I had ordered exactly the right part, will not match the master key system - they offered to wait for me to get the right part & come back another time, but needed to get the lock on ASAP given its a high crime area.  So I have a key on a second system, making it more difficult to track keys.
When they committed to a date for the work, they were on time.  The actual workmanship is of excellent quality, the most important thing in my mind.  Communication with the individual doing the work, was fine.  Their price was competitive for the labor-only part, but:
    - B on price: for a >50% markup on easily sourced parts ($700 vs. $1150); happy to pay a small premium (~10%) for the convenience of single sourcing the parts, but not that much.
    - C on responsiveness / communication: for requiring me to make multiple calls at the beginning to get a quote, and for not suggesting the sending-the-picture-to-get-a-free-quote themselves, and for miscommunicating internally on the manpower required for the job, and for miscommunication on the part needed to match the master lock system.

    El Sobrante Lock & Key
He was on time and called ahead. He had problems with my front door lock and continued to work on it. I had problems with it after he left. He returned within an hour of my call and worked in it. It still gives me problems but it is not do to his work. I would have had to replace the door handle and locks if he had not worked on them. He did not charge me for the extra service call.
