  • My boyfriend has had American Home Shield for over 15 years for a cost of 476 per month. He thought it was good coverage and recommended it to me for my rental house. I called a few times a year on the rental house and 2 out of 3 things were not covered, including a broken pipe. I also had AHS come to our house for a few things including a plumbing stoppage in September of 2009. We have since had another stoppage. I called AHS on a Friday. I did not get a return call from the company that they contracted out to do the work, Rescue Rooter, until the following Thursday after I made calls to check status. The work was scheduled for the following Tuesday morning. The guy came out and determined that he could not snake the blockage through the shower and would have to go through the roof which was not covered. (As he was trying to snake through the shower, he broke the filter loose and informed me I would have to buy a plastic one at the hardware store). I showed him where the clean out valve in the garage was where they cleaned out in September. He said that it was not covered to go through that valve because it was not ground level. (The clean out valve is on the ceiling in the garage). He said he would have to go report to AHS and they would determine if they covered a roof access. AHS called me on Friday and I explained the situation. The AHS person told me that it would not matter if the clean out valve was at ground level or not, she was going to call Rescue Rooter and get back to me. I called again on Monday. By now,the shower, tub, toilet were backed up and we could not use the dishwasher. I spoke with an AHS representative who was very rude and informed me that the work would not be covered. I told the AHS Rep that I had the paperwork from the blockage we had in September from Rescue Rooter, which stated that the main line blockage was cleared through the clean out valve. She said that did not matter. I then spoke with a supervisor who was also very rude and aggressive who first told me that it was not covered and then told me that someone was already looking in to it. She said they would let me know the status by the end of day. I called back at 5:00 and was told my another representative that they were still waiting for a call from the technician at Rescue Rooter. I called the next morning and spoke to another Rude AHS technician who told me it was not covered and that it was spelled out in the contract. I reviewed the contract and there is nothing stating that the clean out valve needed to be at ground level. I called AHS for what was now my 8th phone call to discuss the specific language in the contract and I was told that if I want to contest it I will need to get another contractor out there but if they agree with the first contractor I have to pay both service contractors. Not sure why I need to pay 2 technicians to review my contract! Very, Very Frustrating! And a big waste of Money!! I am canceling both policies!
