ABay Easy ConstructionRemoving the brick 2-story fireplace from or home was a massive job. Numerous contractors came out and said it wasn't a job they would take on, or if they did, they provided astronomical quotes. Ofer came out to assess the job, said he could handle it, and was ready to start within a week or so. His price was very fair and reasonable. Initially we were going to replace the upstairs fireplace with a gas insert and midway through the job, we decided instead we'd like a closet. Without charging extra, or with any hassle, Ofer accommodated this last minute request. The full bathroom we put in downstairs turned out beautifully. His main crew was always respectful, clean, and pleasant to have around the house. All of the workers that came in from plumbing, to electricians, were all equally as nice, efficient, and did great work. All updates passed inspection and look terrific. The project stayed on budget which we were very happy about. We went into the project understanding that there were some materials that were not included in the price, so there weren't any surprises. I recommend making sure to ask about the materials (finishing products & grey materials), that you will be responsible for, so there are no surprises. We are so pleased with the work of Ofer and Bay Easy Construction, and I highly recommend and would hire them again.- Ilan P.

DRoy Miller BrickworkGiving Roy a D because one task went well but the other task went terribly wrong and his attitude was less than professional. Doesn't appear that the problem will be corrected. Roy did a good job installing new brickwork, however our brick walkway that he acid washed and sealed looks horrid after two months - white blotches all over, weathered and dull. If this is caused by our sprinklers, shouldn't the sealant that Roy applied protect the bricks and make it more uniform in color and not weathered? I asked Roy to look at it and he claims there is nothing wrong, this is normal. I should have saved my money and skipped this work as it now looks worse than ever.- Julie B.

BHome & Garden Construction Group
The craftsmanship of the work was nothing short of excellent. The local site work supervision was occasionally spotty (except when we followed the work closely ourselves) which occasioned some rework. When surprises arose (as they do in an 80 year old house with landscaping at least 30 years old) I believe we were sensibly advised as to the options available to us within the scope of our budget and practical considerations. For example, we had to rework the design of a section of the side yard when we learned that the sewer lines and house foundation were not compatible with the plans. Also HGCG workers added some touches to help the new hardscaping to blend in more harmoniously with the existing hardscaping. We haven?t yet gone through a rainy season, so the final report has yet to be made. But a check of elevations and slopes indicates that all will be well on the drainage front..
The only negative was the selection of one of the materials that was used, the silver travertine pavers. They are nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful when they are new. However, the iron in the travertine (the amount of which varies with the source of the travertine) dissolves in acid and then reacts with oxygen to form rust. This rust looks like rusty red stains or pits. Thus, any source of acid, including leaves/needles from redwoods and pine trees, or the cleaning done by the crew with muriatic acid, will cause pockets of red to form. Mike Mikolajcik, an owner of HGCG, stated that there had never been a problem with cleaning the travertine with muriatic acid. We have no reason not to believe him, but the travertine material that was used in our job did form rust pockets and stains when cleaned by his crew with muriatic acid. (A side note: Information available from the US govt about cleaning buildings faced with travertine warns against using acid to clean travertine because of the reaction of the iron with the acid.) Leaves from our redwood tree also caused localized spotting.
We were not pleased with Mike?s reaction to our observations about the reaction of travertine with acid; he believed it was the ?fault? of our healthy redwood tree. Our opinion is that the redwood tree was there when he suggested the travertine material and that he did not know that the silver travertine material was not compatible with the presence of a source of acid.
We figured out that a cleaning with white vinegar, followed by an immediate water rinse and high velocity blow dry, would remove the red spots. To the credit of HGCG, a crew came out and did exactly that, followed immediately by a sealing step. That sealant is not protecting the travertine from rust oxidation (I write this two months after the final cleaning and sealing). However, I think we still like the appearance of the rusty silver travertine better than we would like pavers or concrete. It may, long term, provide a better color match with the retaining walls and our soft-scaping. Sadly, this was a bit of a sour end to what was, on the whole, a highly satisfactory project.

FRoy Miller BrickworkRoy Miller called me AFTER the time he was due to show up and asked to reschedule for the next day. He was very unprofessional in his response to me and did not even apologize.
I have owned my own business for many years feel he was flaky in his dealings with me. I would strong advise checking RECENT REFERENCES on this person should you decide to hire him for any kind of work.

AMISTER CHIMNEY CLEANING & REPAIRS, INCMartin showed and explained what was needed and performed a quality job at the price he bid, even leaving us the extra brick he bought just to be sure he had enough. Martin's price was thousands less than that of the contractor the sellers had chosen to make a bid for disclosures. Mister Chimney's years in the business and reputation on Yelp and Angie's made them an easy choice. The crew was always on time and cleaned up after the job beautifully. The entire job took three days with a crew of three.- Aliza A.

AAdam Wooley Landscape Design & ConstructionAs design professionals (architect and interior designer) working on our own project, a much needed backyard garden, it was important to work with someone who understood plans, could offer advice when an issue came up and was professional. We are tough clients with a picky eye. We decided early on that the person working on our project needed to be able to work with us as clients and design professionals, be committed to Bay Friendly gardening practices and reuse as much as possible the elements all ready in the yard. Not only was Adam the right person for the job, all his staff was just a professional. Each day we had a mini meeting on what was going to happen from breaking up concrete, recycling wood, new grading or even plant purchases. This was valuable since we just had a new baby and needed to know timing on the project. We always knew what was going on, when we needed to be around to make decisions, and if we needed time to think about some options, Adam was great about doing another part of the project to give us a day to figure out a possible design change. Not only were we happy with the project, but plan on having Adam do our front yard as well.- DINAH M.

AAbove & Beyond ConstructionTammy and Al were very responsive to our concerns, and really seem to care about doing quality construction, as opposed to quick cosmetic fixes. While it's never fun to open up the walls in your 97-year old house, Al gave us many options to lower the cost, and helped us to understand the value of preventive maintenance. The front porch and bathroom both turned out extremely well, and we were very, very pleased with the quality of service we received from this company.- AMY W.

APENDERGRAST MASONRYThe fireplace is fabulous. While they took pains to protect floors and furniture, they damaged my newly refinished front and back decks by spilling grout and grinding it in with their boots. Yuck. They also rinsed grout off the roof onto the decks. The company will pay for the deck refinishing, and the managers were quite responsive about that problem.- HEDY S.
