Fence Company reviews in Piedmont

    Barnett Construction
From the get-go David was responsive and easy to work with. I sent an e-mail after reading his profile and reviews on Angies list, and got a phone call back in short order. He came by for an estimate and discussion of my request for a fence for my front yard, and he promptly sent me photos of a few examples. David built the fence which seems like a relatively simple task, but its not when the home, and surrounds are many decades old (100+). The fence sits atop an old retaining wall poured in the early 50s that is not at all level and shifting. Davids skill and knowledge enabled excellent problem-solving so that he could build a fence that looks fantastic, has a level topline, and is stable. He also built a custom gate; again, nothing on my property is standard, so even this seemingly simple task is a bit complex. I would highly recommend David for any job.

    ABC Landscaping Inc
We have used them for at least 5 different projects over the years. They have been just super, and always call them when a project comes up. We have had them out here almost every year. They are very good at building fences, and adding new landscaping. They installed an irrigation system for us as well.

The craftsmanship of the work was nothing short of excellent.  The local site work supervision was occasionally spotty (except when we followed the work closely ourselves) which occasioned some rework.  When surprises arose (as they do in an 80 year old house with landscaping at least 30 years old) I believe we were sensibly advised as to the options available to us within the scope of our budget and practical considerations.  For example, we had to rework the design of a section of the side yard when we learned that the sewer lines and house foundation were not compatible with the plans.  Also HGCG workers added some touches to help the new hardscaping to blend in more harmoniously with the existing hardscaping.  We haven?t yet gone through a rainy season, so the final report has yet to be made.  But a check of elevations and slopes indicates that all will be well on the drainage front..

The only negative was the selection of one of the materials that was used, the silver travertine pavers.  They are nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful when they are new.  However, the iron in the travertine (the amount of which varies with the source of the travertine) dissolves in acid and then reacts with oxygen to form rust.  This rust looks like rusty red stains or pits.  Thus, any source of acid, including leaves/needles from redwoods and pine trees, or the cleaning done by the crew with muriatic acid, will cause pockets of red to form.  Mike Mikolajcik, an owner of HGCG, stated that there had never been a problem with cleaning the travertine with muriatic acid.  We have no reason not to believe him, but the travertine material that was used in our job did form rust pockets and stains when cleaned by his crew with muriatic acid.  (A side note:  Information available from the US govt about cleaning buildings faced with travertine warns against using acid to clean travertine because of the reaction of the iron with the acid.)  Leaves from our redwood tree also caused localized spotting.

We were not pleased with Mike?s reaction to our observations about the reaction of travertine with acid; he believed it was the ?fault? of our healthy redwood tree.  Our opinion is that the redwood tree was there when he suggested the travertine material and that he did not know that the silver travertine material was not compatible with the presence of a source of acid.

We figured out that a cleaning with white vinegar, followed by an immediate water rinse and high velocity blow dry, would remove the red spots.  To the credit of HGCG, a crew came out and did exactly that, followed immediately by a sealing step.  That sealant is not protecting the travertine from rust oxidation (I write this two months after the final cleaning and sealing).  However, I think we still like the appearance of the rusty silver travertine better than we would like pavers or concrete.  It may, long term, provide a better color match with the retaining walls and our soft-scaping.  Sadly, this was a bit of a sour end to what was, on the whole, a highly satisfactory project.

    Borg Fence & Decks
Borg Fence & Decks gave what seemed to us like a very professional and competitive bid, and came over to do the job only a few weeks later. The installers showed up on time, gave us all the information we needed, and completed the job in just one morning. Quick, efficient, exactly to our specifications, and they cleaned up nicely after themselves. Couldn't have asked for more.

A crew showed up with no foreman which was a problem due to language. The fence was no done well. The boards were not vertical and the trim pieces were short so all in all it was shoddy work.
The two gates were also done incorrectly. There are huge gaps and the bottom of the gates are not even close to being level. I have called the company and the owner will not return my call. I would not ever use them again or refer them to anyone.

They came to our house to provide an estimate for a fencing repair. They were very honest in that they mentioned to us that the job would not make sense for them to quote on, due to the extremely small scope of work. They explained in detail as to whay this was the case and both my neighbor and I were very satisfied with their professionalism and honesty.

Adam Wooley Landscape Design & Construction
Adam and his team transformed our backyard into a kid friendly yet aesthetically pleasing masterpiece. We live on a hill so our backyard sloped. There was a small grass area and the rest was brush.
We realized there was a lot of space back there but in its previous state it offered little play area. We had Adam come over one afternoon and we walked through the yard with him with only some rough ideas of what we wanted to do. Adam was able to convert those rough ideas into a concrete design.
Once we agree on the design and price his team started on time and stayed within budget. They were able to finish on time and turned out backyard into something my family and neighbors love. We are out there all the time.
This was the first work we've had done on our house that was on time and on budget. Not to mention Adam was great at communicating with us along the way without. He also didn't need us to make every little decision. He is really good at understanding your vision and taste then making the right decisions along the way.

    C & J FENCING
Positives: They were prompt in returning my call and getting an estimator out for a quote. Price also came in very reasonable compared to a couple other contractors I looked into. The only hiccup in scheduling was they called me less than 24 hours before they were supposed to show and cancelled the first time around.
Negatives: Quality of the work was that of a 6 year old. No care whatsoever was made to match the original craftsmanship of the fence, and wood pieces that were installed were very unfinished (not sanded at all, large splintered pieces, cracks, and rough edges). What was supposed to be a 12ft long top piece of 2x4 was actually cut up into thirds (and very crooked). A 6x6 post that was installed is not aligned correctly at all and it was almost as if the foreman made conscious effort to use the most mis-matched pieces of lumber he had on the truck for the fence. Numerous nails also left protruding. Demeanor of the crew also was not friendly, polite, or professional.
Will NOT be using them again, and will likely end up getting the work redone down the road.

    ODDJOB ROB
Odd Job Rob's estimate was fair and reasonable but Rob had a very peculiar attitude and demeanor, so we decided not to contract his services. In one instance, he left a snarky and irritable voice mail when he wasn't able to start the work as planned. Odd Job Rob should be reminded who the Customer is and needs to also work on being more patient and flexible with the home owner.

    Nick's Handyman Service
Nick showed up right on time, meticulously reviewed the list of items my wife and I had prepared, made sure he understood everything, made suggestions, and then went to work.
We thought we had at least eight hours of work for him, but he finished everything in four hours.  He was polite and articulate, keeping us informed as he fixed things, and made sure we checked out his work on each task before going on to the next one.
    In short, he was great.
Before Nick left, we made an appointment to have him return in about a month to take on some other tasks.
Our only issue with Nick is that his schedule is so crowded (probably because he's so capable) that you may have to schedule an appointment weeks in advance.
