    Shenon Construction
We are so grateful to have found, and worked with, the folks at Shenon Construction. Undertaking an extensive renovation is stressful enough, doing it to a property some distance away from our first home was a scary thought. We knew that we had to find a team that we could trust to guide us through the project, do excellent work, and be fair. We absolutely found all of that in Shenon Construction. Tom, the owner, held our hand through the most critical decisions, offered fantastic suggestions (both technical and aesthetic), was very professional, communicative, and easy to talk to the whole length of the project. Tom was realistic and fair in budgeting and also in the timeline. We appreciated his transparency and his impeccable follow-through. His workers were experienced, also great at communicating, and generally excellent. I cannot recommend Shenon more. I would have never in a million years said that a large renovation could ever be a pleasant experience, but Shenon proved me wrong! The results are beautiful and we are beyond happy and pleased. We would use them again in a instant and highly recommend the entire team.

    Frank Wiegers Handyman
Perfect, as always. We have used Frank for years and would not even think about anyone else. He is smart, professional, very friendly, prompt and reasonable. I am a tough grader but Frank gets an A+. Always has all the tools etc. he needs and he gets right to it. I am a mess around the house so we just wait until we have several things and then we call Frank so that it is fixed right.

He was okay and I would not highly recommend him.  I would say that he is probably a little too old to be doing what he is doing.

He was competitive with everyone else.

    True North Designs
A year and a half ago my wife and I chose Paul North to totally remodel the kitchen in out mid-century house.  We were exceptionally happy with the results and have detailed the experience in a previous review we posted on Angie's List.  This year we decided to remodel our upstairs and we only wanted Paul to do the work.   He is meticulous in planning but easy to work and he can offer solutions to the unexpected problems that accompany construction.  We are also impressed with the people who work for Paul and looked forward to seeing them again.  Paul and everyone he works with are not only highly skilled they are artistic as well.  Something that did not look right caught their eye first before we even saw it.  In questions of placement or taste they spoke with us as equals and gave options on how to best solve the issue.
For this latest remodel we started by having all the carpeting on the second floor removed and replaced with maple flooring. Originally we considered solid maple but found out from Paul and his flooring sub-contractor that engineered flooring offered many advantages.  One of the most important of these was that it was pre-finished so that each room could be done separately. With solid flooring everything must be done at once because sanding and finishing happen at the end of the installation.  With engineered flooring they could go room by room which allowed us to sleep in one bedroom while the other was being worked on then switch to the completed bedroom as they moved on to the other bedrooms.  In addition big furniture did not need to be removed from the room but rather it could be moved to one side while the flooring was being installed then lifted and placed on the newly installed flooring allowing the rest of the floor to be installed.  Best of all there was no need for sanding or applying a finish.
In addition to the floors, which were dazzling after installation, we had Paul gut our upstairs laundry.  This area was hidden behind bi-fold doors and just looked like an extra wide closet.  Paul re-route the plumbing, electrical and gas lines and then installed a window above the washer/dryer.  This window looks out on the half-acre hillside we own.  This side of the house had no windows on it since in the 1970s seeing nature was not the list of must have items (it was for us).  To hide the washer/dryer Paul's carpenters  installed a work surface above them and hinged doors in the front.  Although the size of this area was small the effect was large since we have uninterrupted sight lines in four directions from what previously seemed like a narrow hallway.
These two items would have been enough in the bang for the buck department but in addition Paul crew installed a skylight in our dim guest bathroom, replaced the vinyl floor in both bathrooms, replaced all the baseboards upstairs,  swapped-out four leaky bathroom faucets with four new ones, replaced a bathroom pocket-door with a solid core door, added new exterior electrical outlets and best of all build a beautiful 35-foot long modern wooden fence along the front of our garden.  Actually, I am wrong, TRUELY BEST OF ALL was the repainting of the entire house (3-floors high in the front) in new light and bright colors (the painting sub-contractor did a lot of prep-work and yet kept everything protected and clean).  All of the above happened in less than four weeks as well!
I hope you can tell we love working with Paul North and look forward to doing more work with in the future.

    Five Star Fence
Romuald responded quickly to my email and he arrived for our appointment on time.  He was knowledgable about height regulations and had good advice for our front and back yards.  I have not gotten other estimates, so I cannot speak to his prices, but his quote seems reasonable.  We have not decided if we are building the fence yet, but I will definitely consider hiring Romuald and Five Star Fencing.

    5 Star Wrought Iron
Luis is a soft spoken gentleman.    I showed him pictures, and he drew something up.    Within days, I had a new gate and a gorgeous new wrought iron railing on my staircase.     I have an old Mediterranean home, and a few people asked if the railing is original.   we are getting ready to put in new gates, and we have asked Luis to come out again.   HIs English is not great, so make sure that you have pictures (or some good basic Spanish)!

    Five Star Fence
We had a very good experience with Five Star Fence and Romauld, who was our primary contact for the entire project.
Fences between neighbors are always tricky to agree on -- and Five Star came out multiple times to discuss the project with us and our neighbors. They were patient in showing us samples and making suggestions.
The work was completely in about 7 days (vs the original estimate of 5). The new wall seems well built and we are quite pleased with the wall and fence.

My only complaint would be that the final site cleanup was only ok. We felt that the company should have paid more attention to cleaning up the significant quantities of concrete debris (about 100 - 200 golf balll sized pieces of concrete scattered along the length of the wall).

    Kavin Construction Inc
After several consultations and very expensive around-the-tree suggestions we opted to have just the a straight wall built up to the tree, planning on hiring a creative carpenter to do the around-the- tree work. So, our straight 37 foot by 6 foot wall was to take "about 5 days" Week one...one or two guys trickled in and out to do the brush clearing which prompted a neighbor to ask about the permit. Permit?....yes, building on property lines requires inspectors to come out and be assured you are complying with Thr survey. Survey? Yes. Kevin....a licenced contractor had not pulled a permit. So week one ended with us hustling to get a survey so the footer which they had already dug and poured, ( in what turned out to be themwrong place) could be checked by the inspector on Monday Week two got the inspection and then the footer reported where it need to be. Then blocks up to the height that was limited until the next inspection. Tis took all week. Week three started with the "duh....nobody called Friday for an inspector on Monday". Followed by the "duh..nobody told me it was to be a color-coat (color it he final stucco coat) This circus continued until I called Mike Kavin directly. Suddenly things started getting done ..but this is three weeks into a 5 day job. Mike offered a 5% discount because of all the idiocy . 20 years ago, Kavin did great work for us on a wooden fence. Who knows what's happened to the company, but it's clear they've got some managers who should not be managing. For right now, consider Kavin just another unreliable construction company.

Due to the slope of our lot this fence took real engineering skills as well as a bit of artistry. I explained what I wanted and they figured out how to do it. I love the fence and get compliments regularly. This is the second job we have had H.A.S do.

Matt had completed a big project for us just before the holidays. He did such a good job and was so pleasant to work with, that I brought him back to build a small patio deck and privacy fence. Once again, Matt gave us exactly what we wanted: a gorgeous little patio, and a positive human experience. Thank you Matt, and thank you Angie's List.
