    Griswold Home Care - Pasadena
My mother?s cancer had reached the terminal stage, and it was just a matter of time before she would succumb to her illness. She began to lose her faculties about a month prior to her death. The ten days prior to her passing were the absolute worst. As she rapidly declined, she became unable to walk, eat, speak, or even swallow. Even during that time, her greatest fear was not losing another ability. Rather, it was being alone and ultimately?dying alone. My father passed away alone in a hospital two years ago, and my sister passed away alone in her room four months ago. To my mom, there was nothing more terrifying than taking that last breath?alone. My extended family and I did everything to make sure there was always someone by her side during her final days. But, it was a struggle for us. No matter how much we loved her and saw it as a duty and honor to look after her?it was difficult because we had our own obligations. And, emotionally speaking?a piece of us died each time we saw my mother in her condition. That?s when a close friend of mine took it upon herself to contact Griswold Special Care. I was extremely reluctant at first because I had never procured such services, and I didn?t want to place the care of my mother in strangers? hands. But, Alma, Mercy, and Alba made it so very clear from the moment they met my mother that they were there to help her in any way they can. Alma, Mercy, and Alba took turns caring for my mom around the clock. They were so gentle, kind, and loving with my mother. They were also extremely considerate with me and my extended family by sending us updates whenever we were away from my mother?s bedside. The director, Richard Shoop, drove many miles over to the hospital my mother was in to personally meet her and me. When my mother passed, Alma was there with my cousins. Thanks to Griswold, my mother passed surrounded by loved ones. I highly recommend Griswold Special Care. Your loved ones will not get better care from anywhere else. If you want to get in touch with me to hear more about my experience with Griswold, please email me at I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to Griswold Special Care. Thank you, Alma, Mercy, Alba, and Richard.

    Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association
Livingston Memorial was extremely efficient in getting a hospital bed, oxygen tank and pain medication to our house within hours of first notification from the hospital. The first nurse also came promptly and instructed us about what we should do, what to expect, how to handle pain medication. She also provided a pamphlet about the dying process, how long it would take, and signs to watch for. The nurses made it clear that their first priority was the comfort of my mother-in-law. All of the nurses were knowledgeable, efficient and compassionate. They answered all of our questions, including the ones we asked by phone in the middle of the night. When my mother-in-law died in the middle of the night, Livingston called the mortuary and came to our house to certify her death. This took a huge load off of us at a very stressful time, and helped us to concentrate on the emotional issues. Livingston also offered counseling after her death, both individual and group.

    BrightStar Care
The young woman that they sent to help me was terrific.  Their service all around has been excellent.  She comes out and makes the bed, takes care of the laundry, takes care of the kitchen and cleans things up.  She empties the trash, goes to the market and does the shopping.  If I need to go anywhere, she will go with me.  I started using them in September when I fell.  Initially they sent two or three other young woman.  Finally they sent Vicky.  Vicky has been with me for the past several months.  She is wonderful

They showed up on time. The technician was very good at explaining the new machines. Whenever I call they are very good about refilling the order and processing it quickly. They can get it to you sometimes within a few hours.

    Hospice Touch
Hospice Touch was recommended by my father's hospital in Orange County and again by a nursing home in Huntington Beach.  My father was declining quickly and he wanted to go home to die.  As many families are, we were caught without time to research hospice providers.  My father had been kicked out of the hospital (because there was no more they could do for him) and he was being discharged from the nursing facility (because he showed no improvement medically). We had to make a decision FAST on where to take him.  The nursing facility called Ruben Figueroa, a Regional Manager from Hospice Touch.  He arrived about 15 minutes later at the nursing facility to speak to the family.  I was suspicious about any company that had roving marketers on instant call but Ruben was understanding, charming and didn't dodge any hard questions and I asked a lot of them.  My stepmother was exhausted and not really capable of understanding what was going to happen and how short a time my father had to live. Ruben told us we could change hospice providers once in the first 90 days.  Each nurse handles about 10 patients.  There are volunteers that perform a list of tasks (shopping, babysitting, etc.)  He told us it would take 2-3 hours to set up the home and move my father.  He explained all of the services provided by Hospice Touch and assured us that they would be responsive within minutes.  We were given an emergency telephone number just in case. The set up in the home went smoothly.  They spoke slowly and carefully to my stepmother (the main caregiver) so that she could absorb it all.  My father had been in great distress for the past couple of weeks spitting up horrible tasting bile and being miserable with nausea. He was so miserable that he could no longer eat or drink, read, watch TV, listen to music or even sleep.  He begged me to kill him.  Hospice Touch gave him suppository drugs that weren't given to him in the hospital or the nursing facility and he immediately improved and relaxed.  The drug is called ABHR.  One hospice nurse on a forum said that the hospice company she used to work for used ABHR and it worked beautifully.  Then she went to work for her present hospice company and they are "too cheap" to pay for this custom, compounded drug and things are much worse for her in managing the patients.  It seems like cost may be a factor. I'm so thankful that Hospice Touch used the drug.  I wish we had started hospice sooner and it's a crime that medical facilities don't use these same drugs!   Hospice Touch left instructions for us and a "comfort bag" of various medicaitons including morphine just in case an increased dose was necessary.  They trained my stepmother and other family members in how to administer the morphine and suppositories.  Right away, we could see that caring for my father was too much for my stepmother.  Hospice Touch referred us to a nursing service where we hired bonded people to assist 24 hours a day.  At one point, we called Hospice Touch on a weekend and requested a registered nurse to look at my father.  The nurse came right out, adjusted his medications and told us that he had two days to live.  Two days later, he died in an unconscious state. Hospice Touch made the death process so much better for us all.

She was very positive and very motivating. She was pleasant and did not make me feel self-conscious. She was late sometimes.

    Hospice Touch
We met with Ruben at the nursing home where my father-in-law was staying temporarily for a last effort at treatment.  He went through the paperwork and answered our questions.  The nursing home recommended Hospice touch and we decided to go with their recommendation.  The people at Hospice Touch lived up to ever good expectation I had of hospice care.  They were available, sympathetic and focused on the importance of keeping my FIL comfortable in his last days.  They are able to be realistic without being harsh and it was comforting to have them around.  They worked well with the in-home caregivers we hired to supplement their work.  They took care of so much for us and there was very little paperwork or red tape.

    Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital
The nursing staff was excellent and responded quickly when needs arose. They had a friendly visitor talk with my wife regarding her medical situation. The fact that someone else who had gone through a similar procedure was there to discuss her experiences gave my wife comfort. My wife also told me they had a woman who came by with her dog offering some pet therapy. My wife, being an animal lover, thought this was great. When discharged all the paperwork was completed in a timely fashion. In preparation for her care at home, needed pain prescriptions had been given in advance by her doctors. The nurses showed my wife how to empty drains and measure fluids so when she got home she was not intimidated by the procedure. Overall the hospital and staff provided great care.
