    AT&T U-verse
The technician, Mr. Mungo McGee, showed up exactly at 9am (I had been given a 9-11 am window). Apparently they don't know exactly what they are going to find when they show up and the company estimated it might take as long as 4 hours. Our home is more than 40 years old and has had 4-5 different owners. When Mr. McGee got everything hooked up, he was getting weak and inconsistent signals coming in from the street. He determined that our lot is too far from the end on the fiber-optics cable (about 4,000 feet). But he was determined to get us up and running. After an emphatic call to his office another man cam in a truck with a giant basket arm on it. The two of them examined the wires from our house and the connection down by the bank and determined that we would need a 'bonded pair' of wires (basically a double wire). In mid afternoon Mr. McGee had to make other arrangements to have his kids in Mira Mesa picked up at school. He also had to call his instructor for the evening class he takes to say he would be late. A little after 6 pm he had everything working and it has worked flawlessly for the 12 days since installation. Regarding cost, all I can compare it to is the cost of the package we had before. We now have more channels, almost 5-times faster WIFi, and the same excellent phone service. The package will be about $50/month less than we were paying before. I was charged nothing for the installation, at least 11 man-hours. I graded 'professionalism' a B because AT&T, the company, should have known from my address that I was too far to work without a bonded pair. Mr. McGee's professionalism was an A+.

The new internet and phone service is as good as cable or fiber and works at the full 50 mb/s, which is far beyond what we needed. Their service people go way beyond what is expected in professionalism, knowledge and getting the job done right. They are fast, courteous and technically incredible. Too bad they are limited to AT&T installations and trouble-shooting. We made a couple good friends during this process. Young, adventurous and motivated. Not stuffy old greedy Cox or Time Warner con artists.

    COX COMMUNICATIONS
I've had good experiences with them. I had Cox on one line and I had another company on the other, the other company couldn't solve a problem with their line. They kept insisting it was in my house and it wasn't. So, I switched back over to Cox with both lines and I've been happy ever since.

My experience was far better than my experience with ATand T. The guy who came and submitted the quote was good, made notes of the proposal, installation crew came in, spend about 4 hours getting it wired up and connected. He did a good job explaining to me about the system so I think you know, look at what's going on in the living room from my smartphone. That's pretty cool. There was confusion on billing. They made a couple of concession about a couple of things so this is free, that would be free, but it showed up on my bill, and I called Cox, they fixed it immediately. It's new to me as far as large communications company because we've been dealing with ATand T before and the experience was horrendous, it was an embarrassment to ATand T. They were fine, very approachable, and reliable when it comes to consumer negotiations. They make a commitment, when they say this is the cost, that is the cost.

    AT&T
Rand C was great from the start. They were very professional in booking the appointment. The two owners came out to give a quote; they do all the work themselves and do not contract out to day laborers, etc. They thoroughly inspected the house to ensure duct work was adequate, electrical could handle the new load, looked at vents, etc. They even used booties when they entered the house to ensure they didn't track any dirt in on their shoes. They did not try to upsell us on anything we didn't need. We decided to hire them after getting 5 bids; their price was actually the lowest and included proper permits. They did a great job on the install. They explained everything they would be doing to ensure it met our satisfaction. Afterwards they recommended updating our vent covers to make the air flow more directed where we wanted it. They gave us one for free but they had to order the other ones due to sizing constraints. They returned a week later, as promised, with the additional vent covers. The inspector came the same day and looked at the work and gave us the necessary permits. All in all, a great job. The only downside is that they seem to deal exclusively with Maytag. I know there have been some negative reviews about Maytag but we researched this pretty extensively and it seemed that it didn't matter which manufacturer you went with, a lot of people seem to complain about them all. And what I kept hearing over and over was it was more important that the installation be right rather than the equipment, as it is all made in the same place anyway. Time will tell as to whether that is accurate or not, but we felt Rand C did a really great job. We will use them for all of our heating and air conditioning needs.

I have had them for years and years. I have never had any problems with them, except once when I tried to cancel my long distance service. That was a multi month hassle and I finally ended up having to contact the state public utility commission. because they wanted to charge me. They first told me it wasn't their business and I had to contact the long distance company. The long distance company told me the same thing. I went back and forth a million times. I gave up and called the SPUC. They handled it for me and it finally got resolved.

They have the fastest internet services. I have the bundle service. They are very helpful when I have to call in for a text support. If one is a long standing customer with them for few years they will try and work with the customer and offer the best price. Their prices are reasonable.

As always, SBC is very professional and service was established on time and has been reliable. The price for local service was fine. I opted for a third party for long distance and local long distance because the rates there were too high compared to the competition.
