    J & O'S COMMERCIAL TIRE CTR
Called for an appointment scheduled for a couple of days later. Went in in the AM that day and picked the truck up in the AM the next day. The shop works on large commercial vehicles most of the time--our little truck was lucky to get scheduled. Thank you Jerry and all the shop staff at J and O Tires in Richmond, CA.

The phone was answered on the 3rd ring (nice) with the name of the company.  I asked if I had the Richmond location, and was told that I did.  I then gave a brief description of the damage to my truck and asked if someone could come out and give an estimate for repairs and paint.  The young man asked if the truck was drivable, to which I replied "not safely as the radiator was damaged."  I explained that since the accident happened at 6am on a Sunday, I had the car towed to my studio where it could be safely parked off the street.

This is where things went downhill.  I would have been perfectly fine with a statement that due to their current volume of work they did not do outcall estimates;  but that is not the response I got.  Instead, the man asked if I intended to have it repaired, or was I just getting an estimate!!!???  I told him that if I did not intend to repair it I would not be calling, but that I would be getting 3 estimates from local companies since I have had no body work done in this area.  ( My WONDERFUL body shop in SF may end up with this after all- I had not even considered it since the tow would be a long way)  He said I should have it towed in - for an estimate?  I've never heard of such a thing!!  What do they do after an injury accident when the car is in th city yard.  Do they really expect people to tow their car around to multiple shops for estimates?? He then asked if the work would be paid for by insurance, and I replied that I would be paying for the repairs myself.    I was just about to say that I had called them first because they were highly rated on Angies list and would be glad to meet them here at their convenience or just give them the adress as  the car is outside and fully accessible,  when he said they were too busy to send someone out.  There was no qualifier at all.  It was clear that he did not want my business.  That's a shame, since there is a better than average chance that one of their body men passes my studio as they go to and from work each day as it is on a major access road for the area.

This may seem trivial to some people, but the implication that I was just wasting their time was very unprofessional and insulting.  Also the obvious importance of it not being an insurance transaction makes me doubt their business practices.
It is not at all unusual for an older vehicle used for rough work to be insured for liability only, as major repairs often outstrip the value of the vehicle.  In any case, payment is payment whether from my pocket or an Insurance company - Unless they intend to pad the bill...

I really hope that this is not typical of the industry  in the Bay Area in 2011.   I am so put off that I won't be calling any more body shops till tomorrow when I've cooled off a bit.

Let me reiterate that it is not the refusal to do an outcall estimate that I object to:  that is certainly their perogative.  It is the implication that I'm not worth their time - or am a poor risk that irks me.  I am willing to entertain the possibility that this was just poor handling by a new employee and am open to contact from 101 Autobody should they wish to explain this rude behavior.  Otherwise, I am sure that one of their local competitors would be happy to have my business.

I believe we found them on Angie's List. The job was excellent. I was very pleased with them. They were very easy to work with. They had the work done on time. They were very courteous. The job came out great and it matched all the paint. I didn't feel like they tried to oversell their product. The insurance company felt the price was right. They were great on punctuality. They did a great job.
