    Rosa's Maintenance, Inc.
They are primarily landscapers and had only built a few decks to date. Mine was fairly complicated and they made several mistakes along the way. I expected some, but they made more than I expected. They were very friendly, conscientious and energetic but, in the end, we did the top deck boards ourselves partially because they were over-booked (due to Angie's list solicited work), but mainly because the layout was complicated enough that I wasn't sure they'd be able to do a good job of it.

It went well. We've worked with Sammy/Envirotek at least a couple of times previously and have always been pleased with the results. His crew cares about the job and it shows. I highly recommend this company for all your staining/finishing needs.

On time, on budget, in scope.  Clear communication and met expectations.
Since deck is completely enclosed, my only long term concern is whether we'll have problems underneath the deck with critters or water drainage (although Don set up a gradient so that water would drain out underneath the fence on one side of the deck).  Only time will tell but for now I am totally satisfied with his work.

    Summit Deck Doctor
    WOW.
I thought my 30 year old redwood deck wasn't salvageable, but Rupert convinced me to do so.  He was very prompt & reliable & knowledgeable and everything went as planned.    A real pleasure to work with, especially if you prefer texting over e-mails!!
I thought it was going to need replacement, a cost of $20,000 using a wood/plastic composite.  I am glad I didn't spend all that money- I would have had a plastic deck (Trex )that would scratch/warp/stain/turn to plastic-dust ( according to reviews at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/trex_composite_decking.html)
Instead, I have a sturdy splinter free redwood deck and $18,000 still in my pocket.  Environmentally I saved as well, by 'fixing & reusing rather than buying/manufacturing plastics that would end up un-decomposed in a landfill one day.
If you want a facelift on your old deck- Summit Deck Doctors is the way to go.
If you think your deck is dying and needs to be buried & replaced, don't do so without asking Summit Deck Doctors to resuscitate it.

    MCB Remodeling
I was impressed by Mike's punctuality, professionalism, and responsiveness. Much more so than other contractors I had been in contact with. My job (and my budget) turned out to be better suited for a handyman because it was smaller but Mike went so far as to recommend someone who might be a better fit. If I have a major project that needs doing in the future I would definitely contact Mike again.

    System Pavers
The sales process was fairly high-pressure, though the salesman John was great, very pleasant and knowledgeable about the pavers, stones, timing estimates, etc. We give John an A. We thought the price was very high but we don't have anything to compare it to
Regarding the landscaping and plantings,  this aspect of the project was less successful. Definitely seemed not to be their top priority or top skill set. Up-front planning with John seemed organized. He showed us printouts of the types of plants he recommended. But then when it came time to plant, their "horticulture expert" had no hard-copy plans to show us.  We expected a paper rendering of the garden with plants in place. Instead, we had to look up the plants he was talking about on our own iPad. Then we asked us what color we wanted where, and the project manager wrote down our choices. Seemed very haphazard. That said, several months later the garden is looking good, though we have made some additions and drip line adjustments. We were unhappy with some of the plants being so small it will take years for them to grow up trellises, when they could have used larger plants. We give the garden planning aspect a D, garden result a B.
Regarding the hot tub, they get an F on all counts. The installation was done improperly and the guy had to come back and move it. It cost much more to run electricity to the hot tub than their estimate. They didn't give us instructions for use for our model of hot tub. After several calls and back and forth, my husband finally went to a local pool store and got the info he needed. The System Paver guys filled the hot tub with water without putting any chemicals in or instructing us what chemicals we needed to buy or what to do. They said "watch the video we left you" but first there was no video, then once they brought the video it  didn't cover chemicals or maintenance, or our model of hot tub controls. It was a disaster. A month after installation we finally had it straightened out and have used and enjoyed it since. To do it again we would buy a hot tub elsewhere.
The workmen who did the demo, paver work, stone work, and plantings deserve an A+. The 3-man crew was exceptional. Hard working in the summer heat, friendly, and their work was excellent.
Our project manager Richard was great also. Very responsive and made several return trips to finish up lighting.
So, overall a mixed bag but we are happy when we go in the back yard, so it was successful an we would use System Pavers again.

Work was done well. My only issue is that I was never sure when work was going to be done. When the power washing was done, I knew ahead of time so I could be here. But when the carpenter came and the final sanding / sealing was done, I had no idea someone was coming to do the work.  I didn't even know work had been done until neighbors complimented me on the deck (I get home from work after dark, so I couldn't see that work had done until the next morning.)  Other than not having a clear idea as to when work was being done, I'm very happy with the project.

    JS General Construction Inc
These guys built a deck in record time and cleaned up after themselves.  I don't have any complaints about the workmanship.
They are experts at IPE, an extremely hard wood that requires screws because it is too hard to use nails. They know how to work with this material.  I have no complaints and felt the job went well.

We got quotes from 3 sources over the course of about 3 weeks - the prices were not that different across contractors.
Carpenter was the first to respond and the most flexible.
He proposed a very acceptable project window which met our schedule.
Everyone showed up on time each day;  they kept the noise to a reasonable minimum, especially when a bit of concrete had to be jackhammered out of the way.
Special accommodations were made so that we can unscrew a part of the decking if plumbing access is needed for the faucet we had moved above the level of the deck.
We felt very comfortable leaving the crew to get their work done - they obviously knew what they were doing and were able to professionally deal with the usual unexpected moments without any problems.
I cannot think of anything they could have done better or differently to make this a perfect experience.

    John Robinson General Building Contractor
We used him for about 8 months. You can only think about in your dreams having someone that knows exactly what he is doing, tells you how to save money and doing it correctly, doing what you want and doing something that really won't pay for itself if you ever sell the home. This was a total remodel because the inside of the house used to be all custom redwood walls. I used him a three years prior for a couple minor jobs and I thought he had a lot of integrity. When he came in he said right away we needed to change out almost all the walls because wood is old and it is time to upgrade. If you are going to put a lot of money in it you want to invest it right. When he opened up all the walls we saw a lot of older wiring and he said it needed to be upgraded to meet with current codes. He and his master carpenter knew exactly what to do. Everything they did was like perfection. His cost was fair. Plus, when I finally used him I asked for references and he gave me over 40 references. My wife and I talked to multiple owners and everybody said that this is the guy you give the key to your house to. He made major changes to our home without changing the footprint to add some things like a forced air furnace. Our home is all open beam. It had a fireplace insert for heat and it had an old gas wall heater. I wanted to put in a forced air furnace and he figured out how to run all the ducting along the roof line insdie the open beam ceiling and then cover it with some of the original wood. They reused a lot of the wood from the house. Even when they did the exterior deck they rounded oout all the edges. We had a budget and he worked within the budget. He knew who to talk to locally for windows, a new heater system, where to go to get good plumbing, new cabinets. He drew up all the plans, did all the permitting. He knows how to communicate well with the county building people. If there was a way to save money to do it differently he would make suggestions. He listened to me and he listened my wife. His master carpenter does beautiful cabinetry work. We did a cement patio on the side with brickwork.
