    Melvin Helm MD
He's been my neurologist for about 6 or 7 months. They did a second MRI of my brain and I am waiting for results. I'm an established client so I keep going there and got a referral to him. His bedside manner isn't great but he is supposed to be a great doctor.

. This visit was just a routine required followup, but even so, Dr. Iverson took the time to discuss all my related physical problems with me and to give me some information and advice regarding the need to see other specialists and have specific tests, including MRIs and many xrays. Sometimes I have to wait a bit to get in to see him, but not this time, and he was more than willing to take his time to answer all my questions and to feel more reassured about what all had been going on with my health. I give him the complete credit with coming up with the solution for my long-term (over 40 years now) problems with serious dizziness, which since I was a young person would come on for no known reason, and for which no doctor had ever been any help. I had been told mostly that it was an inner disturbance and had been given drugs for seasickness, and I had also been told that it was Benign Positional Vertigo, for which the treatment is a complicated series of head movements, but he felt the problem had to do with a lazy artery in my neck which sometimes touched something which set off an electrical discharge and resulted in these severe dizzy spells in which I would lose my balance and usually vomit for hours, after which I would sleep and wake up feeling better. He prescribed a particular controlled substance which he had seen work on another older woman, and in the years since, I have not had one serious dizzy spell. For this he has my eternal gratitude, and I could not recommend him more highly.

He is great. He is very very good. My internist recommended me to him for one thing and he is just very good about telling me everything that I want to know and following through. He was just really thorough. He is always available when I have a question, and I know this is not true for most doctors. His office environment is very professional. He does not overbook. His office staff is not overly chatty.

When I was bedding, he checked to see how I was doing, just to see if he is doing the right thing.  I like his demeanor and he is a great teacher.  His office wait is very short, you can go in his office and it may take 5 minutes.  He has real nice helpful staff, they are really really good and top notch.

Their staff is really friendly. They seem to care. What I do not like is the issue of punctuality of my old doctor. There were even no apologies or explanations after letting me wait for a long time. It was also difficult to get an appointment with him. I have a new doctor there now.

The first physician we saw at the practice, although I am sure very proficient, was not a good fit for my daughter from a personality standpoint. She called later that day and asked if she could see a different physician, but was told and quot;no, once you are assigned a doctor we cannot switch doctors.and quot; My husband stopped by their office explaining that our daughter was very upset, she has been ill for months, and since that had been her first visit would they please assign her another physician. Within a few days we were provided an appointment with a different neurologist in the practice and the appointment went very well. The physician was extremely attentive and thorough, but unable to discern what the problem was. At least we are now able to request an appointment with a neurology group associated with UCSF.

I love Dr. Gambin! He saved my life when he was my neurologist. He's still my sleep doc and helped my sleep apnea. BUT the practice has gone downhill since he (and the other founding doc) took retirement (Gambin is semi-retired because he only takes sleep clinic patients.) This is the *only* neurology practice in the area, but they can't seem to attract enough docs to keep the practice viable. I couldn't even get on the wait list because it's full! The referral my GP put in went nowhere; I had to call them. I really hope Humboldt Neurology gets more docs because it's a pain for me to travel to Berkeley every quarter!

My wife and i are unfamiliar to seizures and very worried. We have many questions and he was not friendly or willing to answer them. He acted as if our questions were a joke or something we should know. Very disappointing to leave there with absolutely nothing accomplished except a prescription. Not a nice person and seemed to care less about me and my desire to understand my illness that he is supposed to be an expert at. :(

I have been unimpressed with this doctor in just about every aspect of her care. She is very young, and therefore limited in experience, yet she has always come to quick conclusions regarding my problems and in most cases has dismissed them as not serious or unworthy of treatment. While dismissing the symptoms for which I've seen her, she has insisted on tests such as full blood workups which have never betrayed my commitment to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, she has discontinued the single drug prescription I've had for years that has provided absolute relief for symptoms of RLS and TMJ when I experience them. The only conclusion I've been able to arrive at with this doctor is that she has the worst tendencies for knowing better than her patient - an "I walk on water" attitude that has driven me to seek a new primary care physician.
