    Mike Handyman
His work is very good quality and affordable compared to what I have paid in the past. Mike works quickly and works clean, you can't tell he has been there when he is done. He is very pleasant and easy to communicate with. I feel very comfortable leaving the house with him doing his project. I am grateful that a friend referred him to my family.

    The House Next Door
The House Next Door provided the worst experience I have had with a contractor in 18 years of home ownership. I cannot urge fellow Angie's List members strongly enough to avoid this company.
If you must have any business with them, I suggest the following:
? Verify any claim they use to justify a cost overrun: In my case, Vic, their representative, requested a price increase (for tempered glass to meet code requirements) with the claim that my house is in a high fire hazard zone (VHFHSZ). Quick calls (later verified by email) to the county Building and Safety Office, and to my fire insurance agent, disproved that claim; And an estimate from another window vendor showed his figure for the glass upgrade to be inflated by 600%. Though I treated the claim (and inflated upgrade!) as an innocent mistake, the company offered no word of apology or explanation, which with other indications lead me to believe that such tactics are business as usual.
? Do not let them convince you to sign anything in a hurry ? either initially or for changes during the project. I regretted signing every contract and change order - especially the one that initiated this fiasco. You should take a day let the high pressure sales tactics fade before you sign.
After catching the false overrun claim, work on my project slowed to a crawl. I sent numerous text messages, photos, and 'reminders' to Vic of the scope of the project to bring some progress. Eventually my lack of trust and confidence in Vic and this company lead me to dismiss them from the project - a process that was neither pleasant, fast, nor ultimately a bargain (except for my peace of mind - and any subsequent troubles avoided). There was plenty of messy - and incomplete - work left behind, but I found their delays and evasions to be intolerable.
The quality of work was often laughably disappointing; Have you ever seen cracks in plaster 'repaired' with flexible bathroom caulk? ...Neither had I. Cracks began to appear almost immediately on their new drywall seams, and there is new paint over old bubbled paint (not properly prepped or sanded) that that could crack with a light push. The workers seemed to care about quality, and did some good work, so I suspect Vic's direction is responsible for the rushed and skipped areas.
If you are already involved in a job with The House Next Door, I urge you to be wary of their claims, and don't allow yourself to be pressured or gouged. Good luck!

    Innovative Layout
I heard about Marlon from a neighbor who had hired him to fix several leaking places on her roof and a fix a chimney that was losing some bricks and let water into the house.  I don't know how much they paid, but they were extremely happy with the work and went out of their way to recommend him.  They had found out about Marlon from another neighbor who had a good experience with him.

He was everything you hope for but never expect.  He returned my call promptly, showed up at the appointed time to see the work we needed to have done, was able to give us a quote on the spot.  He wanted to check the price of some materials, and called later that evening to let us know what he found.  We scheduled him to come out to work two days.  He actually showed up on time but with a helper, and asked if it was okay to do everything in one day.  Fine with me!

He did end up having to go to the hardware store a couple of times, which I hate but I guess it is unavoidable.  But for the most part, he came prepared with all the tools, equipment and supplies needed for the day.  Got right to work and I mean these two guys worked hard and fast all day.  There were a couple of delays.  There was a huge rock they found when digging a hole for the fence post, it had to be removed before pouring the concrete.  Also they were to install a post lamp fixture near the street on an existing post that was leaning.  When we dug down to try to right the post, we found a huge tree root had pushed it over, so they had to cut the root.  Both the fence and the lamp post came out perfectly, though, as did the light fixtures and everything else.  They worked until it got dark but didn't quite finish all the jobs, so we had Marlon come out a couple days later.  It took him a full half-day to finish, so we paid him for another half day.  We didn't have a problem with this since the work turned out to be more than projected.

Marlon is one of the good guys.  Very nice, extremely honest, very Christian.  We have been looking for a long time for a handyman and have finally found the one.  We will call him again for any future miscellaneous jobs that come up.  From what I have seen and heard, he knows plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, roofing.  He has built houses from the ground up.  I have had a licensed contractor that brought in people who had no idea what they were doing with the plumbing and electrical.  Marlon does know what he is doing.  No shortcuts, nothing hokey, everything done properly and quickly because he knows what he's doing.

    P's Handyman Services Inc
The crew was right on time and was careful not to damage the hardwood flooring under the carpet or the patio under the pergola. There was no trace of padding or capet or scrape wood left. Couldn't have gone better.

What do you want from a handyman? Honesty. Diligence. Perfection. Fair price. Super Handyman arrived on time, communicated his plans clearly, executed them as promised, cleaned up when he was done, and even told a joke or two (this is the only area he could use some improvement). The finished cabinet is exactly what I'd wanted.
