    AJ Peet Construction
Adam seemed like a nice guy and I might have had a decent experience with him if he hadn't recommended bringing Jim Thompson of Jet Engineering along for the structural engineering part. He said they had worked well together on other projects, so it sounded like a good idea. It was actually a horrible idea, as Jim Thompson was flakey about appointments and then took important papers of mine and refused to even return my emails or phone calls (for the last 18 months), much less return the papers. This meant I never got an estimate from either the engineer or from Adam. I think Adam is a poor judge of character and I wouldn't trust him to recommend anyone for any kind of job at all. Since most construction work involves teams of workers, this is a big problem.

    Soil Stability Construction Inc
I highly recommend Jack Drew and his company Soil Stability Construction Inc. for any jobs within their specialties.  We experienced a landslide after 10-inches of rain over 3-days in December 2012.  It was an explosive slide involving roughly 130 tons of soil and debris that blocked a moderately trafficked private road below until it was cleared.  I retained Rex Upp from Upp Geotechnology (based on numerous recommendations) to do studies leading to specifications for repair.  He highly recommended Jack Drew for our job.  We had limited access for large earth moving equipment and wanted minimal disturbance and trauma to our lands.  They used a Bobcat for careful earth grading and hauling but did much of the work by hand including excavation of 2x4-feet holes for piers that were 18-feet deep.  They did this amazingly by climbing into and descending down the holes using power shovels.  They installed soldier pile retaining walls made with 25-ft, 6x12-inch steel I-beams and treated fir.
The job proceeded like clockwork and took 3-weeks as planned with a crew from 3 to 7 men.  They were very careful to protect our slate patio and walkway paving using tarps and plywood protection.  They went out of their way to be sure that we had the least disturbance possible from the work.  Rick the foreman was amazing as well as  the rest of crew.  They put in full days working effectively every day.  Rick is a master on the Bobcat in tight, steep quarters requiring precision control and he worked quickly in spite of his precision control.  The job involved clearing/hauling earth and other debris, grading earth benches to support the fill, installing filter fabric, installing a drain pipe downhill to a dispersion point, backfilling with drain rock, covering over the top with filter fabric, and adding 1-ft of soil, building small earthen berms to control/direct surface water into a catch basin connected to the drains, grading/contouring the land below the slide and seeding and covering with erosion control matting.  They even carefully graded our unpaved 200-ft driveway back to the work site to clean-up the tracks left and were willing to add work to cover the driveway with pea gravel.  Their work was very, very high quality with much attention to detail and exceeded our expectations.  Jack Drew makes it a point to check in regularly to assure quality and that we were happy with the progress.  Jack also worked in ways to keep the cost as low as possible.  It was the most pleasant experience we ever had in a construction project.  We recommend them highly!  We thank Jack Drew and his people very much!

    Rodrigues Builders Inc.
It took us 2 months to select a contractor for the project. Rick wasn't the cheapest but he was both competitive and more importantly invested the most in learning the project and its details during the bidding process.
During the project Rick proved to be super professional and accommodating to our needs and number of change requests. We had our second daughter born 5 weeks before her due date, before the house was finished. Rick prioritized our project and did everything humanly possible to expedite the remaining work so we can move back in to the house ASAP.
Great quality, subject matter knowledge, attention to details, "customer service" and timeliness.

    Landscape Solutions
The job was done well and completed in a reasonable amount of time once started. We had speciied material to be used and exactly what we wanted done. The landscaper took some liberties with our design that led to a need for addional work, but we were not charged for that additional labor. We had repeated lapses in communication that led to our not being sure when work would happen and what caused delays. Delays were apparently due to difficulty in getting necessary lumber. When the materials were obtained, the job was finished quickly.

For several years, during and after periods of rain, water (as much as an inch) has accumulated in parts of our basement. Other parts have gotten very wet from the water draining down towards an existing sump pump. I waited to do a report until we had gotten some rain and while this year has not been exceptionally wet, there was enough rain to convince me that the problem in our basement has been solved. The entire process went smoothly and everything was handled with skill and attention to detail. I had gotten other estimates which were higher than Bay Area Moisture Control and I am not sure that the work suggested would have solved the problem. In summary, the parts of our basement that were getting very wet are now dry.

We had a bad experience with them. Their inspection didn't really show that our house might flood underneath. We had some issues with them and took them to Small Claims Court. The experience was very poor. The report indicated it might be a plumbing leak and not that it might flood. We don't think they gave us accurate information about the history of the house and that it might have crawlspace flooding problems. It flooded the very first winter; it was like a swamp under our house. We had also hired them to fix some foundation things after we bought the house and they didn't fix everything. They didn't spend much time here and they charged us a lot of money for not fixing everything. We had them give us an estimate to do the work after the flood, but we really didn't want them to do the work. They responded okay on the estimate, but they did not claim responsibility for what they hadnt done right. They didnt give us a good report when we bought the house.

    Dan Henson Masonry Co
It was a pleasure to work with Dan Henson from start to finish. I had interviewed numerous masons for this job, and was so glad that I held out until I found one that I felt had the expertise to do it correctly. Dan, a master mason, came highly recommended by a contractor that he had worked for for many years. His proposal was well written, thorough, and clear. As it turned out, the job turned out to be far more complicated than initially supposed by anyone - no fault of Dan's, it was impossible to know ahead of time what lay under the steps. Many less experienced or less principled masons might have simply laid a new foundation to get the job done quickly in a way that would have ended us up with the same problem all over again a few years down the road. Dan, however, had great concern for doing the job properly. He handled the challenges superbly, carefully thought out the best long term solutions, and was more than fair about minimizing additional expense to us. I'm sure that the extra work he did lowered his profits, but he was cheerful, careful, and unfailingly polite and professional throughout. We ended up with steps that were far more attractive and better built than the ones we had started out with. He took great care at the job site to always clean up properly and caused no damage to surrounding structures or property. If weather or anything else delayed his arrival for work, he always called me to let me know what was going on and when to expect him, a true rarity in the construction industry! Furthermore, while he was working on the steps he noticed that a stone had fallen off the facade of my second story. He took it upon himself to bring a ladder to work the next day and asked if it would be OK for him to fix that while he was around. He did this at no cost to me, just to be nice. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. He told me that he also does interior tilework.

Chris did an excellent job. I paid him hourly - he always was very efficient, always showed up when he said he would and did a great job. When you are paying tractor rates, you need someone reliable like Chris. He has all the equipment you need for a large excavation job. He brought all equipment on site and only charged for the single piece he was driving at any given time. Some guys I got bids from only had a single piece of equipment (IE - backhoe, excavator). Chris's hourly rates were competitive, but I believe I would have spent at least twice as much with the other contractors who bid my job since no one else had the full range of equipment Chris has. For example, I own an excavator. It's the best tool for digging trenches or loading a dump truck, but not for moving/pushing large volumes of dirt for cut/fill which was most of the work on our job. Chris on his bulldozer can move large amounts of dirt at least 5x faster than my excavator. If I had hired a contractor who only had an excavator or backhoe, it would have cost a lot more!

A backup in my main sewer line caused the old pipes in my house to break, and since they were very old I decided to replace them. I got three estimates and although theirs was the highest I decided on them because of their ePipe technology and what would be, according to the supervisor who sold me the job, a "clean" job. They started the job without a permit from the City or the Sanitation department, they were constantly late, the serviceman were rude and arrogant and they did not take any precautions to protect the interior of my house, when I was surprised that they actually had to work inside, although the supervisor had told me they would only work from the basement. There ePipe machine malfunctioned and the sandblasting material together with the old gunk from the old pipes was sprayed into the house causing the smoke alarms to get off. I had to move out of the house. They broke my washer, ruined my carpet my showers have no pressure and all drains are now slow. What a nightmare!
