  • I called four or five foundation contractors to bid the job. Fred Cohen, the owner of Avalin, came out to look at my house and explained in detail not only how the work would go, but the general condition of my foundation. There had been some slight shifting of the house and the floor in one room was bowing. He said it probably wasn't something to worry about, when of course an unscrupulous contractor right there would have upsold the **** out of me. So that gave me a good feeling for Fred's integrity. He sent a detailed proposal with photos he had taken under the house and it was the low bid. Unfortunately, this was in 2015 and I waited three years to hire him because of some job uncertainties of my own. By that time, the price had gone up $1,300. So if you need this kind of work, I recommend you be ready to make a choice and pull the trigger ASAP. Avalin sent a crew of two and it took them two days to attach the various anchors and plates. The crawl space under my house is minuscule. There's no cripple wall, so it's less than a foot in places. I wasn't sure they'd be able to get all the way around the perimeter of the house, but they were pros so I needn't have worried. The access was through a California basement so they were going in and out of the house, and they were conscientious about minimizing dirt. When they were done, I got under there to take a look. California code allows 6 feet between the metal anchoring plates (if memory serves), but in some cases they were less than 3 feet apart along the short dimensions of the house. The joist blocks/framing anchors were mostly about 3 feet apart. There was only one place where I was doubtful: no joist blocks/framing anchors for seven consecutive joists. I took some photos and sent them to Fred along with my concerns, and he sent his team back up and they spent another three hours under the house attaching about half a dozen framing anchors. They also added some work in another section of the foundation that I didn't notice as lacking. So Avalin was responsive to my concerns and generally seemed willing to do more than was strictly necessary to reinforce the house and make me happy. As far as the quality of the work, I hope I never have to find out, since that would take an earthquake. The not-so-good about Avalin was the communication and the wait. Business is good, apparently, and it was five months between paying a deposit and wrapping up the job. When I was discussing that initially with the woman in the office, she was a little short. Gets asked the same questions a lot, I imagine. Fred proved a little difficult to communicate with, like he didn't want to play the phone tag that's sometimes unavoidable. That left me in the dark about things like whether the second round of work was going to take place and when. Bottom line, this is a mom-and-pop operation that means very well, I think, but requires a little extra patience.

  • I have enjoyed working with Jazmin Espinoza, she offers excellent time management skills and has been able to successfully multi-task with work and study environment. She consulted with me when I needed help with my time management. I just couldn’t figure out how to study well. After I met with her I could right away see a difference in my school performance. She offered great suggestions as taking breaks while studying, to have a daily planner on hand & write down everything that needs to be done. I would recommend Mrs. Espinoza to anyone who is having trouble “making time to study.”

I knew I couldn’t just give up so I turned to Jazmin for a time management and anxiety session. She listened carefully to everything I had to say, but before we continued our conversation she had me do some breathing exercises that really calmed me down and helped me relax. Then, she helped me put everything into perspective by writing everything I must get done for that day on a piece of paper and then create a time management schedule by the hour. It included all my work, activities, classes, food breaks, me time, and wiggle room because life is messy. Ever since then I keep making these maps for each day and have become more productive and feeling more in control whenever things turn crazy.

  • Developing an ideal study plan for my exam was difficult, since I never actually developed any strong studying habits. I never had any idea that writing down a detailed study schedule would be the start of my studying habit. For instance, she had me jot down what chapters and how many hours I would invest studying, by doing so I spaced out the material in a steady fashion without procrastinating till the end and cram plus 300 pages. I’m glad, I had the opportunity to work with jazmin, it help me pass my exam and now I’m proud to say I achieved my goal and am now A Certified Quality Inspector though the American Society of Quality.   • Luise (my wife) and I found it very easy to talk to both David and Ronen (Company Contractors) who made it a point to be at the site each morning during demolition and much of the repair work. David made it a point to take Luise and I to various material supply stores specializing in tile, marble and flooring products to select the very best available (much wider selection than Lowes or Home Depot). The company was very supportive throughout the project and made sure we had suitable housing (hotels in the area) for over two months while the home was unsuitable to live in due to the extent of project. Ronen was always very helpful in explaining what were the next steps to be done and how it was to be done which I found to be helpful as I was present much of the time and watched the men perform their jobs. Both David and Ronen were only a phone call away and very responsive. I found it helpful to be able to go on my own and pick out the various kitchen appliances on my own (David gave us a budget figure to work within) as well as the bathroom fixtures rather than leaving it up to them. The project took 4 months to complete but part of that was due to rain delays (Jan. & Feb. 2017 heavy rains after a 4 year drought). I liked the fact that I was introduced to the various subcontractors (cabinet maker, roofer, tilers, etc.) and was able to interact directly with them when issues arose. David especially was very helpful in interceding on our behalf if there were any questions. My only suggestion would be for both David and Ronen better manage the timing of what subcontractor are doing and making sure the materials are available as needed. This would have saved several days throughout the course of the project. Overall, we were very pleased with the interaction and support rendered by David, Ronen and the various subcontractors. The cost was not inexpensive but due to the scope of the work it was reasonable. David Villasenor (home owner)

  • Sue contacted me the same day I purchased her deal here on Angie's List via email, and we set up a date and time for a phone consultation for a couple of days later.  Sue called me right on time, and we chatted for a long bit about my experiences, previous employment, and where I wanted to go next.  She indicated again she was on a 2 week turnaround, and I would receive the resume draft at that time.  Once again, right on time, I received my resume draft, and wow, was it fabulous (!).  It was clear and concise and showcased exactly the talents I wanted to highlight. I reviewed the draft and didn't find anything that needed changing.  Sue then let me know she would complete my cover letter on Monday (today), and this morning, there was a cover letter in my inbox waiting for my review!  There was only one minor update to be done on it, and again, it was exactly what I hoped to receive; a document detailing accomplishments, strengths, and characteristics to allow a hiring manager to get the most information in the least amount of writing.
