Tile Installation reviews in Lake Forest

  • When we moved into our new home, the one area that needed improvement was the tub and shower. Both were original fiberglass that had seen better days, and both had old glass doors that were deteriorating around the edges. Steve came out and gave us an estimate, explaining exactly what he would do. He also gave us local contacts to buy the tile, and fixtures. Workers showed up on time, laid out dropcloths on the floor and cleaned up after themselves everyday. Work went right on schedule with the timeframe Steve said. Finished product went beyond are expectations.

  • Darren's crew are professional, courteous, and punctual. Some adjustments in the work process were accommodated to our satisfaction. We are happy with the overall result and will love to hire Seacliff again for future projects.

  • They arrived EXACTLY on time, explained what they would be doing and then did exactly that. The serviceman was thoughtful and kind. He gave excellent follow up instructions and did a FANTASTIC job. Our tile looks new and fresh. The grout doesn't have a speck of discoloration. AMAZING! I highly recommend them! The office staff is also VERY courteous and helpful. Great experience!!

  • It went great. Abraham helped me pick out the quartz based on the design of my café. He brought me many samples of tiles and again helped so much with his recommendations. He worked so well with all of the other workers I had and worked with everyone's schedule. As always there are no surprises with Abraham. He comes when he says he will and it cost what he says it will. The whole team goes over and above! I have recommended them to my clients and friends and I will continue to do so.

  • It went very well. I had been planning this project for several months. Abraham was so patient! He really helped me decide which material to use. He worked with my schedule which changed often. They were always flexible with me. They did the demolition and the installation in the same day, that made me very happy. I have used Marble and Granite in the past and had the same great experience.

  • This was my first experience working on a remodel. I picked Kyle because he had a coupon listed at the time for a reasonable amount for the labor and some basic materials.
Contact with Kyle was very responsive via phone or email.
I had to purchase all the tile, vanity, toilet, shower doors, faucets, and lighting myself. While this avoided any chance of a markup from the contractor, in retrospect I really could have used Kyle's assistance with double checking the quantities ordered and making sure that everything would work well together. We ran into several delays and instances where I had to scramble to find stuff that worked because what I ordered was insufficient or incompatible.
The crew he sent were friendly and punctual, but the primary guy working on site seemed pretty new and did not speak a lot of English.
The demo was done very quickly and the rest of the house remained pretty free of debris, but there was definitely a lot of plaster dust covering the adjacent rooms.
The first problem we ran into was when our hot water stopped working. It took several days, multiple guys on the crew, and a lot of water before they finally realized that the new shower mixing valve had been installed backwards causing the hot & cold water pipes to flow into each other.
The next problem was with the tile floor for the bathroom & shower. There were multiple small tiles on sheets that had a fixed pattern, but they ended up laying them down in an inconsistent orientation which caused the pattern to get screwed up. We didn't catch this until the tile guy had left for the day, but after calling Kyle he came back that night and scraped it all out. It wasted some tile but thankfully we had just enough extra to cover the rest of the floor. Ultimately there were still a few random loose tiles that were askew but thankfully they're not very noticeable. If you have them do patterned tile work, make sure you check it frequently!
The last problem happened while they were hanging the medicine cabinet/mirror combo. They didn't ask which direction to hang it before it went on the wall, so it ended up going backwards from the direction it should have opened (it has two doors with an 70/30 split and the long door was put into a corner where it couldn't open fully). I asked them to rotate it and the did, but in the process of doing so they simply rotated it around without taking the shelves out and broke one of them. While it was very audible what happened, they didn't really take responsibility for breaking it and just swept up the glass without telling us what happened.
A few other problems weren't noticeable until we started to use the bathroom again. The major issue was noticeable within a day or so was that the drain on the shower floor was slightly higher than the surrounding tile which meant there was always a little puddle of water in the shower. The other problem was that the grout in the shower area became cracked, discolored, and even fell out in some areas. I think in some cases this happened because the weight of the shower door caused the tiles it was placed on top of to lift up slightly. In any event, we eventually contacted Kyle about these issues and he sent a crew back in September to fix them and so far so good!
Unfortunately one problem remained which I had asked them to fix as well; they mounted the towel bar on the wall slightly too far apart so there's a visible gap of about 1/8" where the rod can slide between both brackets. While I mentioned this before they left the job, they did not fix it on their last day or when they came back later in the year to fix other issues. It's livable for us, but it's a good example of something you'll want to pay attention to if you have Kyle's team work for you.
While I liked working with Kyle himself, and I appreciated his willingness to resolve to the issues that came up, I think things would have gone smoother if he had taken a more active role in verifying or handling the ordering of supplies and if he'd come on site to regularly inspect the work. I suspect that some of the quality issues were because we got his B or C crew due to the coupon. If you trust yourself to order things and have time to inspect the work, I think you can get a good value for your money.

  • I had a large slab leak, and after the plumbing and drywall were replaced, I had to tackle the flooring mess I had. I initially contacted a guy to replace my flooring. He did business with Pacific Landmark and suggested I contact them and check out the tile they offer. I was looking for the new wood grain tile that now seems to be popular. They had a large selection, and I found my tile straight away. As it turned out, my tile contractor did not work out, so the tile guys from Pacific Landmark did the job. I had absolutely no complaints. They showed up on time on the start date, and all subsequent days. They did a beautiful job and I am so pleased with the end results. It's exactly what I envisioned and the price was very reasonable. My wood grain tile looks just like real wood with the convenience of tile. I'm very happy to have found this company.

  • Tompkins did a great job from beginning to end.  Rick was the sales rep we worked with in the store.  There was no pressure, no upsell.  Just helped us find the look we were looking for at a fair price.  We were trying to decide between two different wood options and one was almost twice as much as the other.  He verified the warranty was the same for both and did not try to push the more expensive option in any way saying the quality would be similar.

The installers for the wood and tile were led by Tom.  They were quick and efficient.  I was told Tom was one of the best wood installers they had and he proved so, making all the transitions from tile to wood flow without having to use any moulding despite some poor workmanship on the tile someone else had installed in our kitchen.  It was extra work to get it to line up without needing moulding, but Tom took care of it and it looks great.  Despite his expertise supposedly being wood, the tile that Tom installed looks better than any other tile installed in my home.

The carpet guys came a couple days later and also did a great job.  The install looks perfect, do not see any seems, no problems.

As far as the install goes, the only thing I would do differently if it was my company would be to clean the wood and tile after install.  It was somewhat disappointing to come home to these beautiful new floors not being cleaned at all on completion of the install.

One other thing to note is this only pertains to my experience at the Irvine store.  I went to the Laguna Hills store first and the sales guy was awkard and not very helpful and the selection was very poor.  Definitely worth the little extra drive to go to the Irvine store!

  • Surprisingly, Cutler Construction was one of the last contractors I had called for a quote on my bathroom remodel project, having only intended to get one more quote to see how it stacked up to another contractor I was strongly considering.  What I found was that Josh (owner) came equipped very knowledgeable on the remodel process and permitting concerns that I had.  Before signing the contract, I made him endure some overly-cautious Q&A to address some of my concerns (having this being my first major remodel), and was actually surprised when he actually confirmed some of the permit requirements with my city before I had even asked him to.  Josh's quote came in slightly more expensive than the first contractor I had been considering, but Josh's detailed quotation and responsiveness made me feel more confident using his services, even if it was a little more costly.
Once the work started, I found that Josh was very straight-forward and to the point in evaluating and executing the work.  In some regards, this was very helpful because I could literally trust him to handle the schedule and the details without constantly checking in on him.  On the other hand, given that my personality is of the anxious type, it meant I had to take more initiative in asking questions and clarifications on items that maybe were not significant, but gave me peace of mind to know about.  Josh himself was only at the job site during key points of completion or during building inspection, but as I found out, his workers were very well-trained and responsive to be working on their own at the house without Josh supervising and micromanaging constantly.
We primarily had Jose and Miguel doing the tile and dressings around the bathroom, and both were very competent in their work and very easy to talk to.  Miguel especially seems to be a tiling pro, and my wife and I were very pleased with the quality of his work.  Each day they arrived nearly on time and cleaned up their work space each day before leaving.  Just to say it again, the work ethic of Josh's employees to me was exceptional, and really made me feel confident even when Josh wasn't on-site.
We had a minor hiccup here and there.  On my end, we actually had some issues with tile I purchased which pushed the schedule back 1 day, but Josh's team was very efficient in picking up the schedule as soon as they could and maximizing their time at the house.  On another occasion, the plumber (who is sub-contracted, along with the electrician) didn't make a very strong effort to align the vanity cabinet and vanity top well.  While we later found out an uneven wall was partially to blame, Josh and Miguel came out to literally straighten the matter out.  The painter (sub-contracted) did a good job as well, though my wife and I found a minor spot here and there which probably needs touch up - something she and I can easily do in about 15 minutes on a weekend.  In any case, we were fortunate to not have any significant issues with Josh and his crew that caused schedule delay or cost increase.
When the job wrapped up, I found that Josh's crew had nicely cleaned up the bathroom.  I also noticed a nice attention to detail: the night before, I was installing hardware on our vanity, and noticed that the pre-installed cabinet doors were not aligned properly and had caused some scratches on the vanity (manufacturer defect, not contractor error).  The next day, without mentioning it to Josh, I went in the bathroom and noticed that not only had the scratches been touched up with a stain color, but the door had been properly aligned.  I was impressed that this minor cosmetic detail, which was a manufacturer defect, had been addressed by Josh's crew without me even saying anything.  That gave me confidence in the rest of the work that had been completed that it had been done with utmost care and attention to detail.
In the end, I will definitely consider Cutler Construction for future home improvement projects.  As I mentioned before, if you plan to use Josh, be sure you are not afraid to ask questions and clarify all doubts you may have.  Josh can appear hands-off, but in reality he has a reliable crew of workers that justify it, and he is very knowledgeable about the industry - all you have to do is ask!
