    Tom's Iron Works
I have two galvanized metal posts on the side of my house left over after I removed a chain link gate. I also have two wrought-iron driveway sliding gates that I didn't want to use. My neighbor gave me the idea of turning the smaller 12-foot gate into a 2-piece swinging gate on the side of the house. The job was to take out a 2-foot section in the middle of the gate so it will fit into the 10-foot area between the posts, weld a frame piece on each section to finish off the cut, cut off the wheels and any projections below the bottom frame piece, weld on a latch mechanism at the top in the middle, put a pole latch on one of the gates (the kind you pull up and push down into a receptacle in the ground) to hold one of the gates in place, mount the gates on hinges welded to the metal posts, and install a gate-stop near the house to protect a sliding glass door from the gate swinging in to it. They also added supporting  brackets on each metal post to a block wall on one side and to the house on the other. This is because the gates are rather heavy.  The job came out beautifully. The gate is symmetrical and looks exactly like I was hoping it would. If you drive by my house, you can take a look .  It  took Tom and his assistant about 4 hours to complete the job.

    All Counties Fence & Supply
Rick, (estimator from All Counties) came out and instpected the work area.  He was very thorough.  He made mesurements and assessed the job.  He was helpful and insightful in discussing the job.  He also agreed at a later date after the original bid to re-quote the job based upon a revised scope of work.  (I found that after I had removed the old fence the existing galvanized fence posts from the original fence were still is sound condition.  Rick made some suggestions as to how I could modify the existing fence posts to be used with the new vinyl fence.  This saved the cost of installing new fence posts.  With his help I was able to re-use the original posts for the new fence.  This reduced the cost of the fence project by approximately $200 )  Rick also worked with me to suggest how I could make repairs to my block wall to correct a defect at one end of the block wall.  This defect had to be corrected before the fence was erected.  I was able to make the correction to the block wall myself and saved more money there.
All Counties Fence was not the lowest bidder on job originally.  However, the extra expertise and guidance clearly made up the small difference between them and the low bidder.
After all of the prep work was completed Rick scheduled the fence installation promptly.  He was able to have a crew out to my house with 7 days.  The crew was on time at 8:30 am.  They worked quickly and installed the fence straight and true.  They answered all of my questions regarding the actual installation and how to make repairs in the future should they be necessary.  They were careful about the landscaping in the vicinity of the fence.  They cleamed up the area after they were done and went over the installation with me before they left.
All in all a good job.

    Allison Maintenance
I contacted Mr Allison by telephone.  I discussed the job and at his request sent him a photo of the palm tree to be removed using my cell phone.  Mr Allison was able to estimate the job with the information that I gave him over the phone subject to verification upon seeing the job in person.
The palm tree in question was short (8' tall) but big around the base (24" diameter).  Palm tree trunks can be very heavy to lift because of all of the water weight.
Mr Allison came promptly later in the day.  He verified the job and stayed with his original phone quote.  He set to work quickly and removed a palm tree by cutting it into pieces.  Mr Allison quickly cut the palm tree up and carried the pieces away from the area.  He also offered to provide hauling services to the dump if needed.
Mr Allison charges only $35/hr and offers a senior discount.  He works quickly and is not afraid to break a sweat.  He is knowlegeable and courteous and careful around the landscape.  He works alone so you are always talking directly to the man who will do the work.  This eliminates misunderstandings that can result from instructions being passed through an organization verbally.
I would encourage anyone needing tree work, or other handyman work to talk to Mr Allison about your job.  I would plan to use him again to prune a large pepper tree I have on another property.

B.O.M. Design Inc/ Bradley Ornamental Metal
Contacted BOM Design around Feb. 2012 to get an estimate for an iron entry gate. I called several other companies, too, including Baltic Iron. We had no idea what we wanted and all the details involved. Baltic Iron brought a book and offered a couple suggestions, but basically told us to figure out what we wanted and visit the showroom for more ideas. Robin and Jeff came out a few weeks later with inspiration photos and took measurements to give us a quote. Robin was very friendly and creative. We were immediately drawn to photos of iron gates she had taken in various European countries. Knowing that we were attracted to the old-world style, she was able to envision a gate for our entry/courtyard. It took a couple weeks to get the estimate and rendering, but we were very happy as soon as we received them. We even decided to have her give us an estimate for a wood/iron side gate. We thought the price was reasonable for the amount of work involved and the end products (a nice wood gate at Ganahl was around $550). We wanted something custom that nobody else had in the neighborhood; we didn't want the generic iron we see on many houses. It took about 3 months from concept to completion, but the end result was worth it. We visited the shop to see the materials and finalize plans. Robin is very personable and responsive via email. This is a small mom-and-pop shop, so as long as you know that going into it, you'll be pleased. There was a design problem midway through the process, but B.O.M. quickly resolved the issue. We spend approx. $2200 on the iron gate and approx. $1000 on the wood/iron gate. We approved some upgrades, like metallization to avoid rusting. We are very happy with the results and with their customer service. Robin's creativity is what sold us; she actually cared about the work.

    SoCal Fencing
I had a terribly old fence that was original to the house built in 1971.  Tony from Socal Fencing came out and gave an estimate of the job.  My job was a little more expensive due to the fact that I not only had to demo out an old rotted wooden fence, but also behind it was a chainlink and tons of Ivy.  Tony came in at a very competitive price and quoted redwood instead of cedar.  I got a far superior product than the other companies were offering.  I also liked the fact that they use brackets for the framing rather than hammering nails at an angle.  After he explained all the differences to me and I did my due diligence I decided to give them a chance and accepted his bid.

The day the work was supposed to commence he showed up on time with a crew and all the materials.  He was went over with me exactly how I wanted things to look and they started the demolition.  I went off to work and let him know to call me if they needed me to answer any questions. He and his crew worked during the day and when I got home I could not have been more thrilled.  The old fence was gone and all the framing was up.  There were 61 feet plus an additional 10 and 2 gates.  They did a great job grading the land and working around an old stump in my yard.

The next day he was again right on time 7.30AM and went over the framing with me before it was final.  He showed me all they were planning and how they had lagged into the wall on one gate, but thought that they shouldn't lag into other exterior wall because it was too thin. He also went over details of how I wanted the gates to swing open and the overall look and feel.  I left for work and came back during lunch. The work was nearly complete and it looked awesome.  They just finished up now as and I joined here just to write them a great review.  He gave me a great deal and was very professional about the whole thing.  All the workers he brought on site were great, and very nice.  They all took time to show me what they were doing and explain it to me.  You could tell that they took tons of pride in their work.  I could not be happier with my decision and they come highly recommended.  I would not hesitate to use them again.

The guy came out, we spoke to him sensibly about what we wanted, and he measured.  We never heard from him again.  We never got an estimate from him.  It is strange that a company would go to the trouble of having someone come out and do the measuring, and then they cannot be bothered to send an estimate.

B.O.M. Design Inc/ Bradley Ornamental Metal
Bob from BOM is extremely knowledgeable. He looked at the project from every angle and game me multiple, well thought out options. While other contractors just came over, measured the space, asked a couple of questions and then just send me a quote, Bob went through each option, its pluses and minuses. BOM was punctual, they did what they said they were going to do and did it when they said they were going to do it. The craftsmanship was excellent. Of the 4 quotes we received BOMs was the highest but only by a small margin. The lowest quote was 20% below BOM but was not an apples to apples comparison in quality. Update 5/8/2011-  Well, if I wasn't convinced why I chose BOM before, I was sure convinced over the last couple of months.  The electric motor on the iron gate installed by BOM was acting peculiar.  When using the remote, it would open and close just fine during the mid-day hours.  However, in the early mornings (typically when it was cold), it would open, but when I pulled the car out it wouldn't close.  It was the strangest thing...but still very annoying.   Well, Jeff from BOM came right out and tried to figure out what the problem was.  Of course, as if it new Jeff was the one operating it, the gate would never act up when Jeff would test it himself.  But, rather than accusing me of being insane, Jeff listened and made adjustments to the gate operator.  Each time he would make an adjustment, he would call to see if the problem had been solved.  Unfortunately, each time, the problem with the door closing would still occur.  However, Jeff never gave up, and after 3-4 visits he replaced the receiver.  That did the trick and the gate works fine.  Obviously, this problem had to do with a bum gate operator and nothing to do with what BOM had done.  Jeff would not leave me dissatisfied, and did what it took to make it right.  Even though the problem was odd and difficult to diagnose, Jeff kept at it and completely reinforced the reason why I bought from BOM in the first place...not only do they make great gates...they stand behind their work no matter what.

Kirk L Siegfried Design & Construction
This job was done in a very neat and complete fashion. Kirk cleaned up materials each day and left the area neat. He took into consideration our dog's need to go outside, and enjoyed having him "help" him with the fence. The end result was beautiful and almost invisible, so the natural beauty of the area was not obstructed. He coated all the posts with jasco for long life, and to enhance the green color. The gates were designed with an arch for added attractiveness, and placed for convenience. We would certainly hire Kirk again for any project. He is very artistic and has great suggestions for design.
