    ChemFree Exterminating Alternatives
"Chemfree was a breath of fresh air. They were on time with all appointments. They did not try to sell me treatments I didn't need. They did a thorough inspection, gratis. Their teams were polite, cheerful, thorough, and respected our property. Their repair work was first rate. Couldn't ask for more. Fred Bearden"

Surf City Termite & Pest Control
We're on a regular program with them.  Every 3 months they come and spray around the house for ants.  They're very good.  When they come over if there's anything that you've seen around the yard and you think it's a possibility it might be termites they're more than willing to take a look at the situation. They also do free estimates.  The price is good.  I don't have anything to really compare it to, but I know that the price that we pay for the service every 3 months is not exorbitant.  On quality they're really very good.  They guarantee within 24 hours if you see anything they'll be out to take care of it after they've done an application & if it should rain within 12 hours of their application they will come out and reapply for no charge.  They come by when they say they're coming by.  They are extremely professional.

When the owner (manager) came to inspect my roof for tenting, I said I was concerned because I had Cedar Lite concrete tiles. They are somewhat fragile and I was concerned about breakage. He said I could expect some broken tiles, but his people knew how to walk on the tiles. I was led to believe no more that a dozen or so tiles would be broken. Of course, I signed the waiver. They broke 180 tiles which cost me $2000 to replace. This was almost as much as the tenting. The owner was very unconcerned and only recommended a roofer to use for the repair. He made no offer to split the costs or whatever. I had signed a waiver, so I really had no recourse. However, I would never have done this if he had been honest about the risk of possible breakage. Based on his comments after the fact, it was clear he knew this was a possibility and he did not tell me the truth. After I had the repair done and knew the extra cost to me, I sent him a couple of messages and he did not have the decency to respond. I strongly recommend you avoid this company

Stanley Pest Control - Anaheim Office
We heard some critter up in our attic, making quite the racket.  It woke us up in the middle of the night,  Stanley Pest Control came out, found signs of a rat, and put out traps.

Chad comes back every week to check the traps.  Once it was clear that the bait had moved, but the trap didn't go off.  Service was supposed to last a month, but the rat has not been caught yet, so the service has been extended for no additional charge.

The problem is that the rat has access to areas without an attic, and it seems to spend most of its time there.  Even though they have not yet caught the rat, the fact that they come back every week to check the traps, and have extended the service without charge, is admirable and appreciated.

Stanley Pest Control - Anaheim Office
The following day, ants invaded my kitchen again, but this time formed a thick line from the window all along the top of the cabinets and around the refrigerator.  They were drawn to some dog food which had been left exposed for only 2 hours.  The rest of the kitchen was spotless.  I called Stanley immediately, and they sent out the serviceman from the day before.  He said that he was very busy but would spray the kitchen with his "poison."  I told him I needed to move some perishable items from the counter top, the bread box, cookie jar, cook books, etc., and he said he would give me 5 minutes to move everything while he went to his truck to mix up the insecticide.  After he sprayed the entire area, ants were dead and exposed.  He told me that I would have to clean them up.  Since they were in a high area, I said that I would have trouble doing that.  [I am a 5' 1'  senior female.]  I left for a few minutes, and he had cleaned up the dead ants.
I followed up with a soap and water sponging of the area.  The ants have not returned.
I found this experience to be stressful.  It was disconcerting that the ant problem was worse after treatment the day before.  Also, I'm nervous about toxic substances in my kitchen.  I felt pressured by the serviceman because he had other calls to make that day.

    Kilter Termite And Pest Control

We recently found a "kick-out hole" indicating termite activity along one of our interior walls, so we scheduled a few termite companies to inspect our house and give estimates for treatments.

Our house was treated for termites before we bought it in 2012. Also, several months ago, we had a termite inspection after our HOA told us we needed to replace some termite-damaged wood fascia/trim on the outside of our house. We did not get any termite treatment at that time though because the HOA pushed us to get a certified roofer to replace the wood.

The inspector from Kilter performed our second inspection after we found the kick-out hole. Once he saw that a circle had been drawn around the kick-out hole by the inspector from the first company and then saw the inspection certificates posted from the company that had been here 8 months ago, he seemed to be in a rush, talked fast and seemed to just want to get on with the rest of his day. He said, "I see what you guys are doing. You're under warranty and want to check up on the other company's work." I corrected him and told him that wasn't the case, but he still rushed through the rest of the inspection.

We felt like we were wasting his time, we weren't able to ask all of the questions we wanted to, and there were a few pertinent issues to the home we didn't get the opportunity to tell him. To his credit, he did find a piece of wood on the outside that the first inspector didn't find, but there were a couple other areas with termite droppings we knew about that we never got to show him because we felt like he just wanted to finish and move on.

We did not have this issue with the other 3 inspectors that came out.

My thoughts are that, if the inspector trying to make the sale is rushing and doesn't want to take the time to address all of our issues, what is it going to be like after we have already paid them money and have issues under warranty?

After finding a termite kick-out hole on one of our bedroom walls, we had 4 termite companies come out to inspect and give us quotes. Jeff, our inspector from Hi-Tech, was the most thorough out of the 4. He was the only one that got into our attic on his hands and knees - he spent about a half-hour in the attic alone, taking pictures to document the different areas where he found evidence of termite activity. The other inspectors we had just looked around the attic from the access door, which was concerning to us since the attic had more termites than any other area of our house.
Hi-Tech's bid was the second most expensive one we got, but we chose them for two reasons: their thorough approach and their full-house warranty is 3 years, more than the other companies.
While we were considering going with the company with the lowest bid (another company with great reviews), that company's proposed treatment of our attic was only to spray it with Bora-Care. Hi-Tech also did this, but on top of that they injected Termidor (more potent termiticide) into each affected wood joist in our attic - a more intensive approach. Only Hi-Tech and one other company (Pacific Coast) proposed to be thorough enough to drill/inject into every affected piece of wood they found. The other two companies just wanted to spray the attic, which involves less work, but we were concerned this wouldn't end up being as effective in the long-run.
Hi-Tech also applied local microwave treatment to two areas areas where the termite activity was behind drywall. I thought this was an interesting treatment, but couldn't find much evidence on the effectiveness of it on the internet. Nevertheless, they still drilled a few holes into the drywall and injected Termidor to these areas, which is what the other companies would have done too.
In the end, the more thorough treatment approach was what swayed us towards Hi-Tech. The least expensive company's inspector told us that we would eventually end up needing to fumigate and their treatment would help us delay doing that. Hi-Tech also told us fumigation was the only way to ensure 100% of our termites were treated, but they gave use the impression we had a decent chance to avoid fumigation if we went with their more thorough local treatment approach. Since we really want to avoid fumigation, we shelled out more money for the better local treatment.
As an added bonus, Jeff was great to work with. By far, he took the most time during his inspection compared to the other companies and he was very helpful, pointing out a few maintenance issues with the house that he found and offering suggestions about how to fix them.

Surf City Termite & Pest Control
Surf City is just OK. I found them through AL as I didn't like that our previous pest person would just show up unannounced to spray in my yard. I did like that SCTP would make the appointments and call the day before the came out. I have to say that their spray doesn't last long at all. I bought a quarterly or annual package from Angies List and you'd think the spray would last for at least 3 months. Nope. They only guarantee 30 days and that is about how long it lasts. My husband, me and baby girl were all getting spider bites in the night. Practically worse than before the spiders came to us in the middle of the room to avoid the spray along its perimeters. Awful. Outside, even though we were spraying for spiders, we'd get these HUGE spiders with these giant webs under the patio cover and also under the garage door eaves. They'd even attach their webs to our car. SO, I am not sure what the pest dude was spraying....water? Though SCTP are professional and responsive, I would not use them or recommend them for spider treatment. Other than that, they may be good for termites or something like a one time treatment.

Stanley Pest Control - Anaheim Office
The gentleman that performed the service was very careful to check all areas of concern.  I was surprised that he used a brush on an extension pole to "knock down" spider webs and other debris.  He then sprayed the entire area thoroughly.

    Hart's Extermination Company
Not very impressed with Hart's. Initial call was scheduled and we were not informed we would need to vacate the house for 12 hours so they only sprayed the outside of the house. We signed up for the quarterly appointments and I received a message one night stating that he would be there the next day. I am used to actually confirming an appointment rather than just having someone just show up at my home after leaving a voicemail. I told him he would need to reschedule when we were not going to have guests over in the back yard. We have since called 4 times to reschedule and have not received a phone call back. I would not recommend using this provider.
