    E & F Construction
Tony from E & F was a pleasure to work with. He was friendly, informative and professional. His bid on the job was within the range I was expecting and he completed the job, including a couple of extras, within the estimate. There were problems working with the city permit office and Tony went the extra mile to get things worked out so that I would qualify for an EB&B grant. He also worked with the structural engineer who drew up the plans when the city wanted some changes. When the job started, the crew was prompt, efficient, and worked hard. They cleaned up the job site before they left every day and kept me posted on their progress and anticipated targets. Tony's estimate was for a 3 week job, an even with the add-ins they were within 1 day of the goal. I would hire E & F again in a heartbeat.

The work went really well -- the crew was professional, punctual and very hardworking. The communication between the foreman and city inspector, structural engineer and the lab testing were seamless. The work was completed in a timely manner as proposed in the contract.

    BAY AREA RETROFIT
After a full 16 emails back and forth trying to request a bid and schedule an appointment, after attempting to answer a number of questions that would be self-evident with as little as a drive-by, after accepting that a meeting at 5:00pm was not possible because the contractor would be ?exhausted,? I finally got confirmation of an inspection appointment. The time committed to was an hour and a half ago and there has been no knock on my door nor a phone call. I?ve built my schedule today around their visit and I don?t appreciate being disrespected. If the job is too small or they?re too busy, just say so.
Bay Area Retrofit may do great work and they may do it at great prices, but they can't prove it by me. Their website is very slick and informative and I have no doubt that their knowledge-base is extensive. That said, their customer service and reliability leaves much to be desired. I?m familiar with contractors who become unreliable as the job is finishing up ? they are being pulled to start the next one ? but in my experience it?s unusual to get blown off before the job even begins. Really?

    T James Construction

Impeccable, exquisite work; the best contractor I?ve worked with in my many remodels. T. James is just now completing a major remodel at the home where I live and work so I had months of day-long interaction with Todd and  his crew.  These are very considerate people and very skilled craftsmen.  Todd was a breeze to work with throughout, flexible, accommodating, attentive to all the details while ensuring that the work be done as quickly as possible at a rate I consider a bargain given what other contractors had bid.  Cale, the foreman for my job is a master, overseeing a first class crew.  Come take a look at the work. Though the project was more practical than luxury-oriented, the precision gives the whole house real class.  I highly recommend these guys, and am glad I discovered them here on Angie?s list.

    T James Construction
I recently inherited an old run-down house in Berkeley.  The house required quite extensive repair and remodeling.  I was faced with the daunting task with finding a contractor and getting it done.  Through Angie?s List, I contacted Todd with T James Construction.  After a number of conversations, we put together a strategy for tackling the job.  The project was broken up into three phases:  foundation and earthquake retrofitting, structural repair (replace windows, repair stucco, replace roof, upgrade electricity) and finally, everything else which was quite an extensive list including: remodeling a bathroom, refinishing the floors, repairing balcony, installing wrought iron railings and numerous other tasks.
The foundation and earthquake retrofitting was completed by Dec 2011 and was previously reviewed (All A?s!)
The second phase of work took longer than expected and unfortunately, more budget.  While preparing to install new windows, they discovered extensive rot and had to rebuild a good third of the house.
The final phase included a remodeled bathroom which is beautiful, and exactly what I wanted.  They were able to salvage the original oak floors and they were refinished to a warm glow.
Todd is very easy to talk to and was always available (even after hours) for questions, advise, coaching, cheerleading and therapy.  He has assembled a crew that is very talented, professional and polite.  Each one, Cale, Mark, Forrest and Omar bring their own specialties.  They are very hard working and take pride in their jobs.  Each day, they left the work areas clean and in order.  They also were made themselves available to discuss details and answer any questions.
I think the thing that impressed me the most was the finished details.  Both Cale and Mark are artists in their own right.  As a finish carpenter, Cale added moldings and details which elevated the final result.  The wrought iron railings that Mark constructed are exquisite, adding an elegance to the house.
During a project of this scope, there were bound to be set backs and changing priorities. Each was dealt with practical solutions,
openness and a bit of humor!
I lived in the house during the construction.  Todd and his crew were very patient and sensitive to my space and while next to impossible, they tried to keep the disruption to a minimum.
The end result is that I have a beautiful house.  It turned out better than I could have imagined.  I am looking forward to a
continued relationship with Todd and his crew to complete renovations.

This was my first time doing any big home repair, I went to Angie's List and interviewed a number of different contractors...I found Todd to be easy to talk to, open and patient to answer my numerous questions...the work was primarily in the basement and garage, Todd and  his crew were very professional and kept the disruption to a minimum, and cleaned up after each day...They kept me informed of any developing issues (i.e. dry rot, etc) and walked me through the on going work.

This was only part of my remodel and I am looking forward to working with Todd and his crew on the rest!

    Albert Nahman Services
Albert Nahman came out to look and gave me estimate, half of what Berkeley Plumbing would have charged. And the guy who did the installation, Mario, was very professional.  He was concerned about my ancient furnace and gave me the name of a furnace guy who used to work at Atlas Plumbing, Kerin Portillo. I ended up having Kerin come out, inspect the furnace, and based on the terrible cracks he found and I saw on this 22 year old unit, he installed another forced air furnace at a good price, so I was happy with the whole experience.

Feraru & Associates Building & Design Inc
It was amazing. Sorin Feraru always gave us a schedule when the various jobs would be done. The crew always showed up on time and did the work in a very professional manner with great attention of detail and careful cleanup. A lot of the work was redoing work by previous contractors who had done a poor job. Examples of this are rebuilding the deck that had extensive water damage to its fire walls and the rebuilding of the downstairs bathroom shower pan that had settled just a few weeks after a previous contractor installed it. All of the work turned out better than we expected. The house is structurally tight for the first time in its 50 year history. The 3 redwood decks need to be power washed every 3 years. I let them go for 7 years and didn't think they could be restored. Amazingly, Sorin's crew carefully power washed, bleached and stained them to very near new condition. The results of this whole project were just what we were hoping for when we joined Angie's List.

    T James Construction
Since we both were new homeowners in the area and had no idea where to begin, we consulted Angie’s List, where we found Todd. We had heard numerous horror stories about various friends’ experiences with contractors: cost over-runs, delays, unreliability, etc., etc., etc. After contacting him, I received and reviewed several references, both those written ones he provided and others received directly from former clients. Overall, Todd is excellent. He is very thorough, refrains from over-doing, and is an excellent carpenter. He designed and built the beautiful bookcase c** modest “library” where old heating and water equipment were. He also generally has had great luck with sub-contractors. They knew their business and were reliable. In addition to being very good at what he does, he if personable and fun to work with.

    Reliable Construction
They added a door and built in shelves, and refinished the floor in my utility room and put tile in. In another room, they fixed water damage in the walls and put a new sill in one side of the building where the damage had occurred. They put in new ceiling lights and did some earthquake strengthening. They put in shear wall, which supports the whole house better in an earthquake. We have had them over the years, and all the time, they have been very reliable, pleasant and trustworthy. I didn?t feel uncomfortable having people in my house. They came when they said they would and did what they said they would do. They finished the job well; it is not spectacular but it is good. Randy, the owner, suggested many features that turned out to be excellent ideas. I would use them in the future, if necessary.
