  • Consult was with Dr Todd Zimmerman. My appointment was for 8:30 AM. I waited 25 minutes before seeing the doctor.
The nurse checking me in mentioned a date of last visit as being the year 2010. My last visit was actually 2003. Upon checking out, the nurse mentioned something about my medical insurance and quot;Molinaand quot; ....... ahem, my insurance was not Molina - I had never heard of Molina. Oops, wrong paperwork. I should have walked out and not looked back.
I had no problems with my interaction with Dr Zimmerman. Bedside manner was okay. He's not highly animated, but is professional. He conducted a basic physical exam, with a nurse present, prior to discussing the colonoscopy. Questions I asked were answered directly and I believed truthfully. I was told that I would not be awake during the procedure. This was important to me.
The procedure was scheduled for about two weeks from the consult date.
While waiting to go into the operating room I signed all of the appropriate legal papers. One paper related to the payment of the anesthesiologist. Another paper had a section that indicated three different types of 'anesthesia.' and quot;Conscious sedationand quot; was checked.
It never occurred to me to look for the red flag .... and there was a red flag. But I am not in the medical field so I had no idea of what was to come.
There was no anesthesiologist. In the operating room, the nurse indicated that she would be providing the 'anesthesia' (valium followed by an opiate chaser) in the IV hook-up.
I AWOKE DURING THE PROCEDURE AND FELT THE DISCOMFORT OF THE PROCEDURE. THE DOCTOR DID NOT SPEAK TRUTHFULLY ABOUT REMAINING UNCONSCIOUS THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE. THE NURSE DID NOT PROPERLY MONITOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE DRUGS SO THAT I WOULD REMAIN UNCONSCIOUS THROUGHOUT THE PROCEDURE.
I have since researched what 'conscious sedation' is. If this is your only option RUN.
I would not recommend Capitol GI to anyone I know. Dr. William KY Chen was the doctor of the colonoscopy of ten years ago. He didn't have the decency to wait for me to become unconscious before beginning the procedure. [Sounds petty - but this was a big deal to me.] While Dr Zimmerman honored my request to not begin until I was unconscious, I was deceived into believing that I would remain unconscious throughout the entire procedure.
