    Vitas Hospice Service
In the span of months of care, Vitas was usually able to quickly offer phone advice from a nurse or have a nurse arrive at our home within 2 to 3 hours. The nurses would be very helpful and take the time to help my parents in various situations from bleeding, pain, anxiety and constipation issues. Refill of meds were promptly delivered very helpful equipment was provided such as a hoyer lift, low air loss mattress, oxygen machine and reclining wheel chair. A care team was set up with a visiting Doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplin and aid to help give showers. As has been noted from another review of another hospice, they will rely/fall back on morphine to solve pain issues which lead to my mom and dad being out of it and non alert. I had this stopped. There overall care was perfectly fine except in a couple of urgent care situations (Dad's broken leg from a fall and a severe lowering of oxygen /BP levels) they took 4 hours / 2 hours to arrive with their office phone not working respectively.
As paramedics arrived, they finally called to say someone would be their shortly. This after waiting 90 minutes after the intitial request for help/nurse advice from Vitas. They both were on the weekend but it is their responsibility to have enough coverage. When my father passed, I felt unprepared from the hospice and had much anger which included slow response and comfort from the attending nurse and chaplin. After my Dad passed, I was able to vent with one of their social workers and that made me feel better as I was finally heard. One of the grief support groups they offer was excellent and made a difference for me going forward.

We are in are second year working with them. If we don't like the caregivers they will replace them with someone else. They always have someone there, even on the holidays. They are very honest and trustworthy. I think the cost is not outrageous. It is within the normal range. It is very hard to find a live in that drives. It is twice as much to hire two nurses for twelve hour shifts.

We had very mixed results. One caregiver was good and two were terrible. Why do I mention 3? Well, the first person scheduled came over the day before to just check out my mom without calling first. When we asked for her identification and didn't let her in, she became agitated and said, "I don't have time for this" and left. Needless to say, we called Visiting Angels and asked them not to send her the next day. The second person came and worked the first shift and from interviewing her, the care-giving notes and talking with her afterwards, we could tell she did a good job. The reason we had two 12 hour shifts was because mom wasn't sleeping at night and became agitated at night (sundowner's). The third person had the overnight shift and was clearly not prepared or experienced. In her care-giving notes she even wrote, "This is too much!"
