    Alpha Structural, Inc.
The mark of a good company is not how they handle things when everything goes right, but how they handle things when things go wrong. I live in a 100 year old house, and old houses have surprises. On two occasions, my house gave Alpha a little more than they were expecting, and both times, they stepped up and proved why they have the reputation they do. The first time, the footing under my kitchen was undermined, and they intended to put two concrete pads in to fix it. When they realized their initial plans to fix it weren't quite sufficient, they brought out one of their in house engineers, and they built Fort Knox (in a good way) under the kitchen. The kitchen of my house is probably the most secure part of my house now. It will survive the Apocalypse. Then, they were contracted to fix the the stairs in the back of my property. The side of the stairs was separating from the stairs themselves, and Alpha was contracted to replace the wall. But when they removed it, they found the the old stairs there were just a thin layer of concrete over loose rock, which spilled out undermining them. It's something they never could have seen or known from the outside. Mark, one of the bosses of the company came out and looked at it, and had them replace the entire stairs, which now look amazing and are very safe for my children. I also can't say enough how on top of it the people were. Dieter, their supervisor, was amazing. He stopped by frequently to make sure everything was on track and up to standards. You'd hear him pulling up on his motorcycle, and if you had questions, he'd talk through everything that was going on with you. (And be very patient with you about the questions.) When there were job hiccups, he just let me know that they had it under control and was unflappable. He always told me things were going to be fine, and then took care of it. His crews were professional, considerate, hard working, and polite. If you get any of the guys I had, you're in good hands: -Oscar and Marlon did an amazing job on the kitchen underpinning, bolting, and sheerwalling my basement. -Gregorio, Jonathan, and Henry were excellent, and replaced my stairs. (And Gregorio, in particular, is an artist with cement.) Both crews made me realize how consistently good the quality of the work done by this company is. I highly recommend Alpha, especially if you work with any of these crews.

My mom's a general contractor/homebuilder back in Florida, and she came out to help us with the work. She LOVED Ramin. She said "That guy is GOOD." That's high praise coming from her. Ramin was called out to consult on two different questions, but my Mom, being the perfectionist she was, asked him a million questions, and he wasn't put out at all, he was lovely and knowledgeable, and told her some really smart stuff. She was impressed, and so was I.

I spoke with Lisa who was incredibly helpful and super efficient. They couldn't do the work I needed because they are a full service company (they do the construction as well) and I didn't need that. But she gave me a referral. Very nice and if I ever need to do a lot of work on my house I would use them.

This was the type of job noone wants to do. Several engineers and contractors recomended by friends came out to look at this job and basically blew us off. Then we tried Angie's List and found RZ Engineering Corp. RZ Engineering Corp. not only prepared the structural engineering plans but recommended a competent framer they had worked with before to do repair. The City approved the repair without a hitch. We give RZ Engineering Corpstructural our highest recommendation.

    Real Construction
I initially responded to an Angie's list special, advertising a 10" x !2" redwood or Trex deck for only $1499.99.  This, of course, sounded too good to be true, and, alas, was.  Don't get me wrong, I was completely satisfied with the final construction and the price, the latter of which was almost ten times the advertised price.
The reason for this is simple.  One need only read the clearly labeled "fine print" accompanying the ad, which clearly indicates that it does not include demolition, parapets (railing), support structure, roof, or painting, all of which I needed.  One reviewer called this a "bait and switch" advertising technique, which one may feel when faced with the "sticker shock,"  but the deal I got was more than fair, price-wise, and expertly done with a high quality finished product.
The deck that needed replacement was at least 30-40 years old, and was built with wood.  The years had badly eroded the deck, which was warped, with protruding nails, and a termite infested foundation, and was at the point of imminent collapse.  But the old deck was significantly larger than the advertised 10" x 12" deck, and was elevated (thus requiring rails), was built on support beams, and also had an overhead wooden canopy. So replacing it required much more than what was advertised , and a consequently higher price.
Sion and Asi, the proprietors of Real Construction, were responsive, and quickly met with my wife and me to discuss and plan removing the old deck, and replacing it with a new one.  They are both intelligent, experienced building contractors, with an educational background in structural engineering. While we had a choice of termite resistant, chemically treated termite resistant redwood, we elected to go with a wood substitute called Trex. This a composite material, available in many colors, including one that very much resembled the redwood that we were replacing (called Select Saddle).  This is a composite material, which is virtually waterproof, does not require yearly maintenance, is washable with soap and water (or simply water), and is impervious to termites.
Their construction crew rapidly and efficiently demolished the.old deck, and hauled it away.  They then replaced the termite ridden supporting beams with chemically treated, compressed termite resistant wood beams.  They expertly installed the Trex material, using stainless steel spacers, which keep the separate rows of Trex at exactly the right spacing, allowing water to drain off.  They also extended the gutters and connected them to the downspout,  which should keep water away from the front door, which opens onto the deck. Next was the construction of the railing (or parapet), which was done with a beautiful contrasting whiteTrex. Lastly, was the installation of supporting beams and canopy, both made of termite resistant wood, and painted with high quality exterior white paint.
The result was a brand new, handsomely done, low maintenance deck, which serves as both my front porch and an entrance to the front door of the house.
As is customary, I paid for the work and materials in several increments, as the work progressed, with the final payment upon completion.
While dealing with contractors is seldom a pleasant experience (trust factor rating right below used car salesman), Sion and Asi of Real Construction really do "break the mold," and go against the grain.  They entirely deserve the high rating that they have on Angie's  List.

    NICK DIANKOV & ASSOC
I am remodling my bathroom turning one into two, because the age of my house and minimal offset, I could not modify my window into two windows. Nick designed me a roof structure to allow for a generous skylight plan to compensate for the lack of windows. His design and knowledge is fantastic. He is friendly, fair, a talented engineer and did I mention friendly? Do yourself a favor, if you need an engineer, you'd be silly not to use Nick.

    Weinstein Construction Corp
Weinstein did an ABSOLUTELY wonderful job! I would use them again anytime. I recommended this company to family and friends and they have all been 100% satisfied with all of work they have done. The professionalism of the company and its workers is well above other contractors I have dealt with. Their quality of work is top notch and the pricing is competitive, fair and below what other companies would charge for the same quality of work. I would highly recommend this company and would definitely suggest you use them for the work you need done. Another happy Weinstein customer!

Beyond Great!!! These guys saved my house!! And they did it in the middle of one of the wettest months on record in Southern California. They were on time and thorough. It was a complicated project that was worth $25,000. I live on a hillside. They built a drainage trench around my house and ran pipes underground. There were a lot of people here to do the work. They had to pour concrete and do a lot of digging. They dug up a lot of dirt that came when it rained. They later put it all back, and I was satisfied with the work. I used them based on a recommendation by a friend who does soil testing and so forth. The work took four days to finish. My experience with them was excellent.

Ramin was great.  On-time.  Professional.  He went into the attic and was very careful not to disturb any property.  I would certainly use him again.
