  • We canceled our policy after being treated like crap. A/C broke down on 7/7/17. We canceled our policy on 7/21/17 because they still hadn't assigned a competent contractor to fix the problem. 1st Contractor never called back. Waited 4 days to get a response. 2nd Contractor came out 3 times. Called me a liar. Refused to come out when the problem wasn't fixed. Refused to tell me the issue before he left. Lied to the warranty company about the problem. On day 02 of the problem. I paid a company out of my own pocket to diagnose the issue. The issue was the cooling fan. All the cooling fan was not running when the warranty contractor came out. He told me that wasn't the issue. I saw the cooling fan, not running with my own eyes. The warranty company said it would take another two weeks for them to get another contractor out to look at the situation. It has been over 90 degrees in my house for two weeks. I didn't want to wait when I knew the problem and they refused to fix it. Even though it was under warranty. They have a 1 star review on Google and are the absolute worst company.

  • It's been 4 months since I put a claim in and my ceiling fan still has not been fix. I submitted a request in May. They sent out an electrician who did have a ladder tall enough to get to the fan. My ceiling is 15 feet tall. He then said AHS would approve him for a bigger ladder. He came out again and still no ladder. He tried to fix by ripping apart the fan (lost a screw) I called American Home shield numerous times. Each time the wait period was between 45 min and over an hour. I told them I needed an outside company to fix it. They said I need to call to get approval when they arrive. Well if it take a minimum of 45 mins to get a hold of someone it's impossible to call. I asked for a direct line and the manager said you have to wait. I told him to please cancel my policy and he transferred me to a line that convieniantly disconnected me. THIS IS A FRAUDULANT COMPANY AND A TOTAL RIP OFF!!! Before you decide to get ripped off check out this websight of 1291 people that got FFFF'd over. Good luck!! american-home-shield.pissedconsumer

  • The man I bought my condo from provided this warranty.  They sent out an
electrician to repair a broken light switch (it took several days for
him to come).  He didn't repair it properly and had to come back to fix
it again.  He told me there would be no charge for the second trip, but
he told the warranty company that it was a new job, a new repair, and of
course they couldn't wait to charge me another fee.  My explanation
that it was the same switch and that he hadn't fixed it right the first
time fell on deaf, greedy ears.  Needless to say, I haven't renewed the

  • In general, we've been happy with their service and we believe we've saved quite a bit of money by using them. Some of the companies they send for plumbing are very good and some are marginal. The last plumber who came out had an attitude which neither myself nor my wife appreciated.
  • We have called upon them several times to arrange for repairs on our new home.  They are very responsive and efficient but the people they send out are the worst vendors.  Three out of four times the guys they sent didn't fix our problem or they tried to upsell us on something.  It's been a waste of money overall as you have no choice in who they send out.  We just have to ask for them to send someone else than the previous time because we don't want to get stuck with the same incompetent repairmen (and they're always men).

  • I had an item that needed repaired and they refused to fix it. They felt it was a pre-existing condition. I had the home inspected before I purchased it and everything was fine. I sent them the inspection report stating that it was fine but they would not accept it.

  • Actually very poorly.  The faucet in question was a hot/cold filtered water faucet and was installed with our new kitchen about 2 years ago and developed a leak near the top requiring replacement.  We called First American - bottom line although faucets were clearly covered under the contract and we were looking for a replacement to an existing faucet (same make/model) they were only prepared to reimburse for a "builder grade" faucet for cold water only and would not even cover the full cost of the replacement.  At the end of the day this "covered" part cost me $65 for their deductible, $378 for a replacement faucet, $180 to get someone here to install it, and I received the glorious amount of $45 to "cash out" of the claim, not to mention all the time I wasted trying to deal with these folks.

As mentioned before this is only one of a series of very bad experiences with this company.  Another was trying to get an electrical panel repaired and a third was an on-going saga of a ceiling fan remote replacement that one claims person denied was covered while another readily admitted it was a covered part - this latter person was an exception in my dealings with this company - she was an ANGEL and deserves kudos for sticking with us through that process.  All in all my time wasted and the marginal quality of the so-called "professionals" they send has led me to let coverage with First American lapse after more than 20 years with this company first at our prior residence and how here.  We stayed with them so long because their service and contractors were once top-rate.  Obviously they have found a way to save money is to find cheaper (read less qualified) contractors, raise their deductibles, and fight all claims whether with merit or not.

I cannot chalk these feelings up to unfamiliarity with insurance or the insurance process.  I work in the industry and am frankly amazed at how self-defeating the attitudes and procedures have become at this company.

I cannot in conscience recommend this company to anybody.

  • I have contacted First American for four different occurrences in the first year following the purchase of our new home.

The first claim was due to a short circuit in wiring under our house.  The contractor came in a timely manner and addressed the problem professionally.  If that were the only visit, this wouldn't be such a negative review.  Unfortunately, the remaining claims were wrought with delays and lack of action.

The two plumbing claims were completely frustrating.  The first was due to a leaky toilet.  It took several weeks, and contact with upper echelons of First American, to address the problem and install a new toilet.   The second was due to a lack of hot water in certain faucets.  The assigned contractor did not return calls for several weeks, and again it took contact with First American management to get satisfaction.

The last claim, a failure of a GFCI outlet in the kitchen, was a complete waste of time.  I contacted First American on a Saturday, received no service or returned call at all, and on Wednesday, called my personal electrician and got a lesson on how to replace an outlet.  Total cost:  $18.00 for the outlet at Home Depot and a little of my time.

If they operate this anemically with minor problems, I cannot think that they can be trusted with anything major.  It is apparent that they use contractors who will cost them the least amount of money and provide the very minimum in workmanship and professionalism.  Beware.

  • They are my warranty group where if I have a problem, they have a contract with service providers that they send out. I pay an annual subscription with them and we have had them for many years now.
