    Pearl Remodeling
After having incurred some water damage during the winter rains, and discovering additional long term water damage in the process of getting estimates to make repairs, I decided to go with Pearl based on recommendations from friends and having a few conversations with Ben, who oversaw my project. The price was very competitive, even when we realized additional work would be needed due to some long term damage being more expansive than anticipated. Now that the work is done, you'd never even know they were there. It looks exactly like it did before the damage occurred (even down to some wall textures which would have been challenging to match). Very happy with the work and would definitely utilize again for future (and hopefully more fun) projects.

    Pure Restoration Inc
I usually don't post reviews, but I had to post a review for Pure Restoration. They're a really great company and they helped us out in a very difficult time. We had a roof fire at our house two years ago, fortunately no one was hurt, but our home was destroyed. It was, of course, a total surprise... we didn't know what to do... so we turned to the internet and discovered Pure Restoration on Angie's List. Tommy helped us navigate the difficult process of rebuilding a home, from dealing with our insurance company and getting the money to acquiring the permit (we're in Los Angeles, it's not easy), to re-designing the home and right through the build. It was a long process, but Pure Restoration made sure it went as quickly as possible. We were fortunate that no one was hurt, and very fortunate that we found pure. I would highly recommend them!

    G&H Painting
The work was fine. We did go beyond the coupon and paid for the extra work. There was some confusion about what the estimate for the work beyond the coupon value was, and that was frustrating for both the firm and for me.

    SOD Builders
SOD builders recently finished our complete kitchen remodeling project at our investment house. They were great people to work with during the entire remodeling. The in-house designer of SOD builders was very helpful by talking to us and understanding what we want to get and need in the kitchen. Our meetings with the designer was a good stage in determining the perfect layout. The construction work was smooth and by far surpassed our expectations! Our project manager (Avi) was on top of everything during the entire time. He made sure to inform us about each step that was completed and he also made sure to email us with videos and pictures of the work. The construction quality was excellent as well. We highly recommend SOD builders.

    LSM Drywall & Painting
They were neat, prompt, and paint job was nicely done. Steve found a problem with some flooring that a previous contractor had hidden from us and advocated for us to pursue the contractor to get it fixed. We appreciated that.

    Cielo Construction Company
Overall I would say my experience was a solid A-. I'm going to preface this review by saying I may be pickier than most. I've gotten about six bids, Cielo was not the cheapest but they were not the most expensive either, they were right in the middle. We felt comfortable going with someone whose price point was in the middle since we've heard horror stories about low bidders. Our remodel started 3/21/2016 and ended around 4/27/2016. First the positives. We're very happy with how the kitchen turned out. It's much more efficient and it has become a warm and inviting area in our house. The island and open shelves turned out beautiful and I get tons of compliments from guests about them. Our family lives in the kitchen and it passes the toddler tests, they are able to run around and not get in our way. The flow of our kitchen has made our life easier. The project managers (Sam and Uri) were great with being on time and showed up when they were suppose to show up. Uri, the main PM for our kitchen project, was very responsive, he texted and called back the same day usually within an hour. He was very personable and I felt comfortable working with him. He dealt with problems head on and didn't skirt around issues that were complicated. I felt I could be honest with him and he would not take it the wrong way and was able to get pass any issues, that was important to me, especially under stress and exhaustion of a construction project. They have shown themselves to be a trustworthy company and I that bares a lot of weight. Now for the negatives. The sub-contractors and construction crew were not as punctual and about 25% of the time they did not show up when we were told they were suppose to and there was no communication about the no show. That was probably the most disappointing of the experience. Expectations were set and when it was not met, I felt pretty bummed about it. But I also understood that there was probably a reason behind the no show, e.g. the contractor got stuck at another site, miscommunication of where they were suppose to go,etc. It still didn't sit well with me no matter how much I tried to explain the disappointment away, and I did have a moment where I questioned my judgement. I really do think Sam and Uri are good people and try to do the best they can. It's difficult managing so many people and multiple projects simultaneously. I use to be a product manager so I definitely empathize. They handled stress well and I felt comfortable being honest with Uri about any issues/ hiccups that arose. Lastly, there are a few spots around the kitchen that I have noticed were done in haste, for example, when they closed up the window, the stucco look like a patch job stucco as oppose to trying to blend the pattern of the stucco to match the house. It looks weird to me but it's on the side of the house that is not exposed much to onlookers. Also the door they installed in our kitchen has a hinge that protrudes out a bit, it's not flushed with the other hinges and the edging, but doesn't affect the functionality of the door and no one will know except for me. I didn't even notice it myself until I went to install a door stopper. I just didn't want to call and have them fix it, because by that time I was exhausted from the kitchen remodel. Overall I thought the experience was good. They finished around the time they said the project would take and pretty much within our budget, give a few days and a few extra dollars, but nothing too extreme. I think the best mentality going into any projects is to have in your head that construction usually takes longer and cost more than you think. We had that going in and Cielo didn't take as long or cost us as much as I had set myself up to believe and that's a good thing!

    Build For You

Do NOT EVER let Ilan Cohen, his nephew Leo, or anyone in his employ into your home!  Our nightmare began in July, 2015, when they came to our home in response to a call I received from "Steven Miller," supposedly a local contractor. (We had talked to The Kitchen Store & they were going to have someone call us--we thought he was the person they had recommended, but he was not). They were pushy & immediately began roaming all over our home, hoping to find more "projects."  We should have thrown them out that day!  They quoted a price for a kitchen remodel, & when we said we'd rather get other bids before committing to anything, they "threw in" attic insulation (which we had mentioned as something we'd like to do later), since they just happened to have some leftover from another job & could give us a great price.  We agreed to the insulation.  BUT, since they had even not looked to see the crawlspace, and what the job would entail, the workers were not able to do the original job, which was to lay batting.  They had to blow it in, which suddenly would cost much more than their original quote.  As soon as they began, I couldn't breathe & ended up at Urgent Care with respiratory distress.  No one wore masks, or offered us any! They demolished our kitchen--literally--with no regard for anything! (Ilan had told them that everything was "trash")! They destroyed items we wanted to keep, threw other things away, such as our stove hood, damaged our screens, our stove,& items in our basement.  Nothing was protected in any way!  Ilan would not agree to pull permits with the City of LA until we told him he had to stop work until he did!  The job was to be finished by Sept.1, 2015.  The job was never finished!  We finally fired Ilan & his floor person, Oscar, on 4/25/16!  There were several cost overruns, & we were forced to take out a loan for which Ilan was happy to suggest his friend at Bank of the West.  They kept finding more things that needed to be fixed/replaced, including the subfloor in the kitchen, due to their lack of foresight, which added to the cost, of course.  They replaced it & laid a new vinyl floor.  They did a shoddy job, with a huge seam & other problems.  We told them that the new subfloor was inadequate, but they wouldn't listen.  They laid another floor, but nails began popping up through it before we even walked on it--only workmen had set foot on it!  We demanded the subfloor & floor be replaced.  Surprise!  Oscar, the floor person was "out of the country!"  No one else in the world could do it? Really? We did have great luck with Mike, the cabinetmaker, who listened to our ideas and worked with us, to make that part of the kitchen beautiful. The quartz counter tops, sink, & faucets, which we chose & paid for separately, are lovely. The counters were not installed by Ilan's crew--but we've had to already have the grout replaced where it had separated, due to the sinking subfloor. The electrician did a good job, & only one section of under-counter lights needed to be redone. After the 2nd floor was laid, it took Nestor & the other workers 2 days to RE-install our dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, fridge, washer & dryer. They did not have the tools & parts they needed, so there were many delays and trips they made to Home Depot!  That night, the dishwasher sprayed water everywhere under the sink, flooded the kitchen & shorted out the electrical, due to the garbage disposal being installed incorrectly.  Fridge doors were replaced upside down & didn't close properly, & the oven door was crooked & didn't seal.  We insisted that an appliance repairman NOT employed by Ilan come and make sure they were safe to use-which he did, on Oct. 1, 2015, made the necessary repairs & replaced the damaged piece on the stove. Needless to say, this was long after the Sept.1 completion date!  Repeated calls & texts to Ilan were either ignored, or we were put off with empty promises.  Finally, on March 4, 2016, we threatened legal action if he did not complete the job, especially to replace the floor again!  He said they'd be "out next week."  On April 11, we again threatened to sue him, and gave him a deadline. During the entire ordeal, Ilan refused to talk to or deal with me, & treated me as a second-class female nobody.  This was a kitchen job, not a garage or man cave job, and I was the one who would be using the room--if it ever got finished!  On April 11, Oscar said he would come on 4/14, to repair & reinforce the subfloor, & lay floor #3. He said it would be a "1-day job."  Once they started, it took them 4 days--4/16 through 4/20, & when we looked at it, we told them it would have to be done again.  Woodgrain pattern, not a perfectly rectangular room, and the pattern was laid diagonally, rather than perpendicular to the walls!  These "professionals" should have known that, when they started to lay it, and corrected their error. When we texted pictures to Oscar, who was not present, of course, he said that we would have to pay for the next floor, since they had laid it "the way we wanted." We have since purchased vinyl flooring from a reputable local business, which I will also review. The workers all were nice, but they did not speak or understand enough English for us to communicate with them.  Oscar, Mike & the electrician did, but they weren't always there, or available.  We are still finding places that they "painted" that were not completed, or the wrong color was used, or a brush, rather than a roller, etc., when they went back & "touched up" the places we pointed out to them.  They left nail bulges in the walls that my husband has had to replaster & we have both spent many hours painting, doing the "finishes" Ilan promised, but that his workers just couldn't comprehend. Ilan refused repeatedly to itemize anything, give us receipts or warranties, & if we hadn't been there and made ourselves  a copy, we would not have certification of the final City inspection!   I pray that anyone considering Build For You will read this review and save yourself the expense, physical and emotional stress, and anxiety we have endured because of him.
