    Affordable Handyman and Remodeling Services
I highly recommend Jose Ortiz as a contractor. He is the best handyman I have encountered in my 42 years of home ownership: Not just affordable, but creative in solving problems, meticulous in attending to details, careful, reasonable, punctual, honest, fun to work with.

    Pronto Home Repair
He has helped us a couple of times and has been great. In addition to perfect electrical work, we asked if he could help with a custom carpentry project to make a mantle. The mantle is perfect and exactly what we wanted.

Birdsall Construction & Remodeling & Plumbing
I hope that a B will not be considered a "bad grade." Overall I was quite happy with the work that Jim Birdsall and his other team members performed, but there are a couple of areas where constructive criticism seems appropriate. First, the good things: We met with Jim about five weeks before I wanted to start the project, and I explained that the timing was important. He agreed to hold the start date and he did. Once work started, it was very efficient. We had people at the house six days a week. Jim and I communicated prior to the start date in order to minimize delays once the work started. I should say that Jim does not, in my experience, respond regularly to email, so instead you should text him. Once I figured that out, communication was very good. His team is polite and professional. The tile worker was exceptionally good. His work came out beautifully and he checked in with me from time to time to confirm aspects of the design. The other worker who stood out was the one who cleaned up the holes that had been punched in the walls, so that the walls could be repaired. This hole cleanup work is tedious, making an irregular punch-out into something neat and rectangular, and it makes a big mess. This worker carried a vacuum with him everywhere he went and was clearly respectful about the fact that he was in someone's home, not just a set of walls. I really appreciated that. The electrical team was below the standard of the others. Unlike the rest, they made no almost attempt to protect our floors, walls, or doors from the mess. Busting up walls is going to be messy, but a professional crew should at least make an attempt to provide protection. They were unprepared to do that and didn't even have their own broom or dustpan to sweep up afterward. Also, the new outlet boxes are sloppily installed, in some cases either not square or not set far enough into the wall for the face plate to lie flush. Finally, the main electrician has a funny way of talking about lengths, which was confusing to everyone, even his assistants. We were installing two lights in one room, one at 3'0" (36") from one wall and the other at 3'6" (42") from the opposite wall. The main guy told his assistant, "The first one is at 3 feet and the second one is at 36." "Thirty-six" was apparently his shorthand for "three foot six," but it took a while to decode this, and when I emphasized that we were talking about 42 inches, not 36, he seemed not to understand. It's a good thing I was there. I think Jim knows that this electrical team is not up to the standard of the rest of his organization, because he griped about them a bit to me. He may even have said that it wasn't his usual electrician, but that our timetable forced him to use someone else. (I can't remember whether he said that.) If so, that's a fair trade-off, because I was asking a lot as far as the timing went and I knew that it would mean some compromises. The attic insulation people were fine. The price seemed high to me but I did a bit of looking around and it was pretty much the going rate. The painters were okay but they had to be told multiple times which colors would go on which surfaces, and they got some paint on the carpet when doing the baseboards. It's old carpet that needs to be replaced anyway and the paint is not that noticeable. Back to the positives, Jim made some good additional suggestions along the way. Replacing the attic fan unfortunately did not pan out, but I'm grateful that he suggested ceiling lights, which were inexpensive, look very clean and discreet, and are immensely helpful. If you work with him and the topic of ceiling lights comes up, ask for them with confidence! They are great and if you decide not to use them, they aren't conspicuous at all when not in use, so there's no risk. A minor gripe is that the person who installed the bathroom fixtures did not work to the degree of precision that I would like. Some distances or alignments are slightly off and the tub is not quite level, although this may be due to a defect in the tub that our compressed timetable didn't allow us to stave off. (In any case, the defect is minor and I trust Jim's assessment that it won't have any adverse implications.) He also declined to caulk the sink countertop even though I said I wanted that, because "you don't really need to." I could caulk it myself, but to have it look good requires a steadier hand than mine. I would happily go with Jim again, but I would insist on different electrical people (if we were doing more electrical work) and I would be more vigilant on some of the installation details. But I think he would be fine with that and I would expect another project to go smoothly.

    SES Builders inc
Before we started the remodeling project at our house, all we had were just some pictures from a magazine that we collected over the last few months. We met several contractors and we asked them to make the master bedroom and master bathroom to look as close as possible to these pictures. SES builders (Eli) inspect the pictures and measured the spaces and after a week, they came up with a design that changed them completely and made them better than the pictures even. Eli and his team were able to do an amazing job that included everything from demolishing to remodeling and we are super happy with how it all came out. We enjoy the new bathroom and bedroom so much that we really dont know how to thank them for the work they just did. Thank you guys

The Pool Guys Remodeling & Repair
Really great company with which to do business. They are very professional, responsive, helpful and punctual. They do what they say they will do and come out to your home when promised. Both April and Tim follow up on their commitments and April comes out to check on the job as it is progressing. No worries if there are any problems because they take care of it. For example, some of the mastic was uneven and they came back promptly to fix it. Also, the automatic pool filler was not working properly at first and they quickly sent Tim back out to reset it. Kudos to The Pool Guys!! You can't hire a better pool remodeling and repair service. It is very obvious that they take pride in their work and in their word. Highly recommend them and we would hire them again if needed.

    Preferred Home Builders Inc
Initially, I wasn't 100% sold on the bid for the project. Additionally, I had already had some work done on my house, and I had quickly learned how the price for a renovation could quickly increase and how the length of time to complete a project could easily double. However, the project manager assured me that his group would adhere to the agreed upon budget, and would finish the project on schedule. Finally, when he agreed to install a tray ceiling in the adjoining living room for no extra cost, I committed to the approximate cost of $70,000. There were to be added expenses: price for pulling permits, but this was minimal and really provided peace of mind knowing that everything was installed according to code. There was also the added expense of having wooden floors installed and all new kitchen appliances, but this was to be expected and allowed me to specifically choose the degree of quality I desired to be present. I chose various stainless steal appliances for the kitchen accented by a professional grade 36-inch Wolf range-top for the island. For the floors I decided on an "antique-java fossilized" bamboo, manufactured by Cali Bamboo. Throughout the renovation I had weekly updates by phone and email, and I was given a time frame for outside items I had to purchase or order: glass door for the pantry, pendent lighting for over the island, back-splash tiling, paint colors/samples, and of course the appliances and flooring. They also agreed to demo the existing fireplace structure and place new stacked stone tiling around the new gas-inset fire place I was going to have installed. When it was all said and done, they had finished the project ahead of schedule, entirely on budget, and exceeded my lofty expectations! I would highly recommend them for future business. In fact, I'm taking my own advice. In the very near future I plan on getting a quote from PHB to renovate my master bedroom / bathroom and walk-in closet. Looking forward to this next big project!

Multiple subcontractors with little supervision. Walls and paint damaged multiple times when counters and mirrors installed. Floor damaged when painter came and repainted. Not one area of this restroom that did not get retouched due to damage. In addition to the grout cracking and falling out in areas it is very uneven.

    Frankie's Construction and Restoration

I am incredibly impressed by Frankie's Construction and his workers. The remodel started with an overview of what I wanted the final project to look like. Frankie was able to provide me with an estimate and a detailed plan of what work would be performed. He was professional, courteous and polite. He was also very knowledgeable and was able to guide me and offer advice as to the components of the remodel. Frankie was able to give me a start date directly following the estimate and the remodel began. Frankie was able to work around my work schedule if we needed to meet in person. Before the project started, he informed me of when his workers would arrive at my home and also provided me with an approximate leave time. Each day of the remodel Frankie's workers were there, on time, were extremely courteous and clean and very helpful and kind. Frankie estimated the project would take about 5 days and he was accurate in his assessment. Frankie was able to completely remodel a full bathroom in 5 days. That included everything!!! Floors, walls, tub, toilet, sink, vanity, fixtures and a medicine cabinet. And, the work he performed is of high quality; everything looks exactly as I hoped it would. What I am most impressed by is Frankie's honesty and integrity. He really seems to care about what his work looks like and how his customers feel about him. He is honest and trustworthy and this, in my opinion, is rare in the construction world. After seeing the amazing work that Frankie's Construction has done, I will never use another General Contractor but him for any work on my home.

(I submitted this review immediately following the service and for some reason, which was explained to me by Angie's List,  the review never got posted. An Angie's List representative stated they were re-designing the web-site and that included having to manually import reviews. I mention this only as an apology to the provider as I feel he should've gotten the review when it was written. A representative stated the review would post as soon as possible, but it's been months and I still don't see it reflected in Frankie's reviews.)

Nonetheless, Frankie is the best contractor I've met, he's honest and does great work.
