    Saber Roofing Inc
My roof was in a sad state when I bought my house a year and a half ago. The skylights were just sheets of plastic covering the old corroded frames, and they leaked. I got three bids from companies here on Angie's List, and I chose Saber because Ryan came to my house and told me absolutely everything I could ever want to know about roofing materials, skylights, product guarantees (the best in the business), and decorative finishes for the pipes. He left me with a binder full of information detailing all the different types of materials I had to choose from and a long list of addresses of completed jobs that I could visit. And the price: it wasn't the lowest, it wasn't the highest, but it covered everything except time and materials for problems that might be uncovered once the old shingles came off. (And there was trouble! Some wood rot on the main roof, and extensive rot on the porch.) The original quote was for around $19000. Repairs and product upgrades drove it up to $22300, but it would have been more if Ryan hadn't given me a significant break on labor. The only downside to choosing Saber Roofing is that they are deservedly a very popular roofing company. There were at least 60 clients in line ahead of me before they could start my job. (They did cover the leaky skylights with a tarp to prepare for El Nio.) It was at least six months between me putting my deposit down and them starting my job. But in the end, the wait was worth it. The crews that came in were quick and professional and very good at their jobs. They got rid of all the rot and made sure that everything that needed to be fixed was fully restored before the new materials went on. The new roof, gutters, skylights, and pipes they installed all look great and are guaranteed to last. I highly recommend this company.

I needed to replace my chimney cap after a storm blew off my old rusted one. I knew from past experience that roofers charge an arm and a leg for this so it occurred to me that perhaps a chimney sweep does chimney caps. I lucked out with my first call which was to The S.F. Chimney Sweep. I left a message and got a call back within twenty-four hours from Jeff Friedman. Jeff is very personable and easy to deal with. He came out for a free estimate and while checking that the pipe where the cap goes was in good condition, he noticed that a piece of wood molding was missing from the wood surround that encases the chimney. He told me it needed to be replaced because I could get bees in there or birds too could nest in there. I asked if he could replace it but alas he couldn't because he doesn't do woodwork. But after thinking about it, he said he could use metal flashing instead of wood, if I didn't mind it not being wood. That was fine by me, one less contractor to call. I asked about the chimney cap and what it would look like. He answered my question and added that I could get a stainless steel cap that would not rust but it would cost more. It was only $30 more so I went with the stainless steel model which had to be special ordered. Because of the special order, it took a couple of weeks before installation but the wait was worth it to me. The cap looks great and the flashing strip should keep the birds and the bees away. I think the pricing was very reasonable. It was $190 well spent. I highly recommend Jeff.

    Warm Solutions
I made my appointment and later had to reschedule with Barbara who was very pleasant to deal with. She also called the night before my appointment to say they were coming the next day. Joe Prini and John Jacuinde came and were friendly, neat, and clean. Warm Solutions installed our chimney seven years ago, and it has seen heavy use for the last four with no problems..

    ABA Hearth & Home
Appointment time frame was set from noon to 1:00 PM, with the statement that they would do their best to get the inspection started as close to noon as possible. At 12:50 PM, I called the office to confirm that I was on the schedule and was told that the sweeper should arrive within ten minutes. When sweep arrived, I asked about his arriving at the very end of the scheduled time frame and he said that the office had scheduled him between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM. I told him that I wanted an inspection so he looked up the chimney and said it appeared to be clear except for cobwebs. Then he said he would clean and inspect the chimney from the roof. I asked why it needed to be cleaned and he said that was the routine the company normally followed. I reiterated that I wanted an inspection for integrity only. He went on the roof to inspect the chimney from that end and after about 15 minutes, total elapsed time from knocking on the door, announced that the chimney was structurally sound. I asked what the charge would be and, when told $125, I asked how much it would have cost if the chimney had been swept. He said $140. I questioned the price for such a brief visit only involving a visual inspection from the fireplace up and the chimney cap down. He said that it was the company's policy to charge $125 irrespective of the time involved but gave me the company owner's name and suggested I speak to her. When I spoke to Rhonda James (owner), she explained that $125 was the charge because the company had been in business for 14 years, that their employees were experienced and knowledgeable, and that, while I was lucky to have had a safe chimney, I would have been happy to pay the $125 if a dangerous flaw had been found. I said that I would expect to pay the same rate regardless of the findings and that the rate for a 15 minute inspection was excessive, especially when an inspection with cleaning/sweeping was only $15 more. We concluded with Ms. James telling me that they were a reputable company, I was lucky I didn't get a company that didn't know what it was doing, and that was their rate.
