    John Williams Design
Our experience with John Williams Design was outstanding in every way. Our initial project was centered around adding flowers and ground cover to the hillside behind our house, along with additional landscaping. With a number of in-person meetings as well ideas sent back and forth by e-mail, we were able to develop a detailed plan for the landscaping of the hillside, along with several other areas around the house. With pictures of all the plants that were planned, along with drawings of the new plant locations and planters, we had a very good idea of how the project would be done. John had so many good ideas that we expanded our original plan to make use of many of them. When this expansion led to a more expensive estimate than we had originally planned, John worked with us very effectively to decrease the cost back to the level we wanted. Our project involved significant clean-up of the hillside, several new concrete planters, improved sprinklers and drip irrigation, outside lighting, and many wonderfully colorful and varied plants. We were extremely happy with all of the work done by his group, and by the sprinkler, concrete, paint and electrical people. They arrived on time, cleaned up every day, were very responsive, and all worked well under Johns direction. We are very very happy with the final results of our project. The new plants and flowers are gorgeous and growing well, the new planters are exactly what we wanted, and the lighting has dramatically improved our enjoyment of the landscaping in the evening. John and his people have been extremely responsive when a couple very small things needed to be adjusted or fixed. We have nothing but good things to say about the entire project it has succeeded well beyond our expectations, and we have only wonderful things to say about the work with John and all his workers and contractors. We very strongly recommend John Williams Design for your landscaping projects.

It was very good.  They did a good job.  I was very pleased with them.  Very professional.  They spend time with you on the phone.  They have responsive service.  They do good work.  They put in a sensor and if it rains the sprinklers will sense it and won't turn on.  They stand behind our work.  Very reasonable pricing.  I like the fact that there crew had t-shirts.

    Distinctive Landscaping Services Inc
Distinctive Landscaping/Ervin Ramirez is incredibly straightforward, communicative and reliable.  All work has been done on a timely basis, at the price quoted, and with good communication.  We receive weekly emails detailing exactly what is going on, with diagrams and photos as needed to explain matters.  We cannot possible recommend this company more.

So many people responded to the deal they offered on Angie's List that we couldn't get an appointment for weeks. We had a leak so had to have someone else fix it.
Sam came several weeks later. My husband saw him and was very impressed with his knowledge and the fact that he didn't try to sell him things we probably didn't need. We hired him to take care of our backyard twice a month but he doesn't start for two weeks so I can't comment on that.

They were okay. It seems like the head guy who came out had a work team who did it and he told them what to do and they walked around and did the thing that they were supposed to do. I felt like the head guy was perhaps not that knowledgeable about what we wanted but his team looked like they had done all of this before and managed to do this all just fine. That was great. It seems like at the beginning it was not all clear that he knew what was happening. But when the guys came out they did a great job and they were done and it was fine.

    Hammer Plumbing & Drain
Terrible.  These people gave us an inaccurate diagnosis of the problem at best, or told us a lie at worst.  Do yourself a favor and steer clear of Hammer Plumbing, even if you have an emergency!
Here's the story:  A Hammer plumber named Oscar arrived and performed the service of inserting the camera and snaking out the blockage.  Up until this point the service was fine.  He told us that the camera had detected a break in the main pipe leading from our house to the alley. Oscar showed us an image (that could have been anything) on the video, saying that this was the place where the pipe was broken.  He said that contaminated waste water was leaking into our soil and if we didn't get the pipe fixed, the waste water wii;d soak the ground alongside our pool and endanger its stability.  He then quoted us $3200 for fixing the pipe, with a "reduction of $650 (the amount we had to pay for the snake and video camera)  if we scheduled the pipe replacement right away.  Of course we were terrified by the prospect of what could happen and we set up a date for Oscar and crew to return to do the big job. Fortunately my husband suspected that they were overcharging and ended up calling our regular plumber to give us an estimate and replace a portion of the pipe.  Our plumber dug to the point where the pipe was allegedly broken and removed the six foot section that had been identified by Oscar.  Low and behold, not only was the ground around it NOT damp, but when our plumber examined the pipe, it was NOT broken. He charged us $850 for the work, not $3200 less the $650 already paid.  Either Oscar had inaccurately diagnosed the problem or, at worst, he had lied to us.  I was angry and called the company to talk to a supervisor.  I left word with the receptionist. I made three separate attempts and the supervisor would not return my calls. Finally I called for a  fourth time and spoke to a woman named Sandy who identified herself as the office manager. She could have cared less that we had been misled.  Do yourself a favor and stay away from this company!

    Automatic Sprinkler Controls Inc
They fixed a broken sprinkler system, used parts that were good to save money and used new when needed.  Had great ideas how to improve the old system.  Came back when I had questions, checked everything only to find my gardener had turned off the system.  It's been 2 years and everything is working well but if any of the sprinkler heads stop working, I will call them again.  I don't remember how much it cost but it was worth it !

    Hammer Plumbing & Drain
They fixed the pipe, but the price they charged was much higher than what others in the same business would charge. After speaking with them about our frustrations, they agreed to lower the price.

    Valley Groundworks Landscaping
The landscape cleanup process went fairly well.  In a matter of week, they Valley Groundworks was able to get most of the job completed.  The job was left only 85-90% complete.  Initially, the crew was great to work with- they showed up on time, they moved quickly, they appeared to be working all day long.  There were two large palm tress that we had removed, but the stumps were left behind.  During the removal of the palm trees, two electric outlets on the outside patio were broken to pieces and never repaired or replaced.  We had a couple of large agave plants removed, and those trunks were left behind as well.  For almost 3 weeks the cleanup debris sat in my driveway looking like a abandoned pile of tree branches, leaves and dirt.  It wasn't until neighbors began to complain about the eyesore that I decided to take matters into my own hands. I hired a separate haul away company to remove the debris.  Juan Zuniga of Valley Groundworks would constantly provide excuses for not being able to finish the project in a timely manner.  At one point, he even drove his truck onto a neighbors lawn after having lost control of his truck and said he wouldn't be bale to come back until the repairs on the truck had been completed.  We sat around waiting for over 2 months listening to promises that he would come back and finish the landscaping job he started.  We never saw Juan again.  He initially offered to return the unused portion of the money we had given him-I made the mistake of paying for his services in full before the job was complete- but I never saw a refund, never saw Juan or his crew, and our landscaping is still incomplete.  We have since had to hire a new landscaper to finish the job they left unfinished, an irrigation specialist to connect our system which was left disconnected and an electrician to repair the damage they did to the outlets in the back.

    Stumper Landscaping

the sprinklers shorted out. i researched angie's list, called a few guys, picked bill weber. once in a while, you get lucky. what an experience!
i had booked a different company to come out to give me a free estimate.
then, pam (bill's wife) called me back (i had left a message) and said the charge would be something like 80 or 90 an hour.
i dont know why, but i just got a feeling about bill and pam and decided to go with them (and cancel the other guy) -- even though free visits from highly rated providers beat $90 visits almost every single time

    i'm glad i did.
bill came out the next day -- on time to the minute. he was just as smart and elegant as ccould be. he spent an hour diagnosing the mess of a sprinkler system at my house -- and then DIDNT CHARGE ME A PENNY because he said he had diagnosed it for me but  hadnt actually "fixed" it. instead, he referred me to another specialist for my problem.
along the way, he was fixing everything he saw -- a little mess here, another mess there
what can i say? i wish i could find a lawyer like bill. and a doctor. and a mechanic. and and and
thank you bill and pam -- you've made a fan for life
