    BEWARE OF THE SUNSET'S DARK SIDE                   
     
    Sunset is sometimes defined as the daily disappearance of the sun below the horizon.  I now define it as the sudden
    and unexpected disappearance of $7526.44  from my wallet.
    I bought a 2013 CRV from Sunset Honda in San Luis Obispo on 12/18/15 for $19,788.00.  It had 28,378 miles on it.  I soon realized I did not feel safe in it because of its large pillars and blindspots.  I did research on-line and found that the CRV's blindspots have been an issue for others.  One reviewer discussed the pointy D pillars which significantly reduce rear visibility.  Another wrote that visibility may not be good for some people because of the panel between the side and back windows.  Another said the CRV has limited visibility due to the rear window design.  Yet another compared the CRV to the RAV 4 and concluded the CRV's rearward visibility is compromised by its narrow rear window.
    On 12/31/15, thirteen days after I bought the used CRV, I called Chris Baughman, Sunset Honda owner.  He told me there was
    nothing he could do about my concern about the safety issues of the CRV.  I drove the car for an additional 4 days and on 1/4/16 I e-mailed Mr. Baughman and the two salesman who sold me the car.  I again expressed my concern about safety.  None of them responded.
    I continued to drive the car only when absolutely necessary.   I called the salesman and he suggested  I come in to look at other cars.  I made an appointment and I looked at other Hondas while Robert Naste, Pre-Owned Vehicle Manager, looked my CRV over.   A few days later one of the salesmen let me know that Mr. Nasty would do one of the following:  (1)  Let me return the used car I had owned for twenty-five days and they would give me $14,000 for the car I just paid $19,788 for.  This did not include $1789.44 for sales tax, fees, etc.   (2)  I could buy a new Civic and pay $10,000 in addition to the $21,577.44  I paid for the used CRV I just bought.
    I remain shocked that Sunset Honda would pay me less than I paid for the used car twenty-five days before.  I would have
    expected something like that had the CRV been new.  I felt that paying over $30,000 for a new Civic was also absurd.  I made the tough decision to go to another auto dealer and trade in the CRV and buy a new car with an excellent safety record, as well as excellent visibility.  This meant losing $7526.44.
    And to make my Sunset Honda experience even more repulsive, I had to go in and sign a refund request at the dealership on January 14, 2016 for a refund of $1784.00 I paid for an extended warranty.  Hanc Meas, Finance Manager, promised I would have my refund within 30 days.  When I called on 2/22/16 and the Sunset employee I spoke to found the check request, she said no check had been written because the request was marked HOLD.
    While it is obvious Sunset Honda will continue to do anything to keep sales and profits up, if my review helps even one consumer avoid going through what I went through at Sunset Honda, I am glad I took the time to write about my experience.  God Bless America and our freedom of speech.

    Overall, I enjoyed a great experience at a very competitive price (we received bids from three other A-rated transport companies). 

    My challenge was that my daughter was racing to complete a research project at a lab in New Mexico (we live in California)  and had no time to meet the truck during normal business hours.  She also worked up to the last minute and just before jumping on a plane to start college in Georgia.

    Leanne went above and beyond to find a local storage facility in Santa Fe (open 24-hours) that could also manage loading the car onto big-rig the next day.  My daughter was able to drop off the car on a Sunday and catch her 6:30am flight two hours later. 

    Once in Georgia, the car was delivered an few days later and exactly when and where the big-rig driver had promised.

    It couldn't have gone more smoothly.

    Scheduled service for wheel alignment as car was pulling to side. This was fixed to my satisfaction. They explained which wheels were out of alignment and likely causes. What impressed me the most was this independent mechanic did this based on vehicle manufacturer's specific requirements. Getting a ride home and back was also very helpful (in my experience fairly rare for independent mechanics).

    It went well. After a lot of looking, the mechanic located a tiny water leak under the intake manifold. Small enough, that by itself, it wasn't a big deal, but over time, it managed to drain the radiator!
    Because its such a tiny leak, we elected to be attentive and keep the water filled instead of spending $500+ for them to take it all apart to fix the leak.
    I've been bringing all my cars to 4 Star for over 8 years and totally trust Gary and his crew to not only get the job figured out and repair the problem, but I know he won't rip me off in the process. We have more than our share of shady mechanics here in our small town, so I'm always happy to send my friends to his shop because I know he wil treat them right!

    They Didn’t Do It Right and Weren’t Nice About It I brought my car to this dealership for a simple oil change. The car was returned to me with the oil overfilled by half a quart. Because of my concern that this amount of excess oil could damage the car, I phoned the Subaru manufacturer’s 800 number to get their advice. The manufacturer’s technician told me that this amount of excess oil “could cause problems” and advised me to drain the excess oil. Excess oil in this amount can cause the oil to foam, exposing engine parts to excess heat and damage. It can also ruin the catalytic converter and cause the engine to pollute. I had to bring my car back to Rancho Grande Motors TWO MORE TIMES to have the excess oil drained. (The first time I brought it back the oil was again overfilled by half a quart!) These were bad experiences because the service writer was, at times, uncommunicative and clearly angry. He told me I was “making too big a deal” of this and accused me of checking the oil improperly by replacing the dipstick in the backwards position. (In fact, when the dealer returned the car to me it was THEY who had replaced the dipstick in the backwards position!). Sometime later, when I called the same service writer to ask a question and get a price on another service, he never returned my call. It took another call to the Subaru 800 number, who then contacted the dealership. Only then did a manager finally return my call. In all, I was seriously inconvenienced by this poor service. I was made to feel that I was creating a problem, when, in fact, the dealer had twice performed a service improperly, resulting in a condition that could have damaged my car. My advice to other Subaru owners is to find a local shop you can trust. For repairs, ask the shop to use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. I found such a shop, and on my last visit they performed my oil change properly. I intend to use them for all my future Subaru service.

    Aaron and his crew were great. They were knowledgeable about my Subaru Legacy. They were courteous and reliable. They completed the work, on time, as promised, and did a good job. | |Most important, they were honest. The dealer had insisted on adding a pressurized flush to the coolant change. Aaron explained to me that this flush was unneeded and might cause damage to the seals. Thus, I saved a considerable expense, compared to what I would have paid the dealer. | |I will definitely use these guys again!
