It was done professionally, quickly and the service was great. They went over and above what we originally contracted for and they were great to work with. We would recommend them to anyone needing their yard landscaped.

I got three bids and decided on Toyoda since it was a family run business and it was the cheapest. I was told that I was guaranteed 100% coverage for my front lawn. My front lawn is slightly irregular in shape but nearly rectangular. I did not get 100% coverage. The northside of the lawn turned brown. It was about 12 inches wide and 15 feet in length. I called Toyoda and come back and readjust the heads. It made it worse. Instead of 12 inches, it was now 18 inches. Called them but no call back. I emailed them photos of the dry area on my lawn and got a reply saying they will come back and readjust again for free. Never came back. After a few years past, I had many problems with some of the heads. They need to be replaced. I called Toyoda (they never answer the phone - they screen calls) and asked if they would come and service my system. Nothing.

    Dalmatia Landscape Design
Edward listened to our wish/want lists and walked the yard with us. He produced a written design and development proposal, and a full schematic, incorporating our ideas and included ideas of his own based upon  our discussions.  We went through 2 additional written designs and an additional schematic before the final plans were approved...through the entire process he listened to us and give us sensible feedback on what we thought we wanted and made suggestions which, now that I look out our front windows at the completed landscape, are wise for our yard and the style of our home.  He produced for us a binder containing full color photos of each plant and scrub and the flower characteristics, watering and sun/shade requirements.  He brought bags of rocks and pebbles in various shades and sizes for our selection; he left us with a huge catalog of outdoor lighting and a metal color wheel of the various textures and shades for us to make our selection.  We have two huge pine trees, one oak tree and a mature orange tree which we wanted to keep; he designed the plantings, irrigation and lighting around these trees.  In addition, we have a wrought iron fence around the property which already had two electrical outlets; he updated this electrical system for us and provided a nifty remote control device that allows us to power on or off lights [such as Christmas light strings] attached to our fence without leaving the house.  He also modified our fence where it meets one of the pine trees.   Oh, and his workers removed the three foot high hedge which surrounded our property and was in front of the iron fence!   Edward was on the property every day during the two week turf removal/rebuilding project. The project was completed the week before Thanksgiving week.   He has been by to inspect at least once each week thereafter.    His work crews and specialists [electrical/plumbing] are excellent.     We will not hesitate to call him when we are ready to tackle the back yard!  Yes, it cost a lot, but the time and labor spent is evident; removing St. Augustine grass is no walk in the park, as is the positioning of the large granite boulders throughout the landscape and the design and construction of the oriental style dry streambed which comes down through the center of the yard.

    Stumper Landscaping

A pricing proposal was promptly sent over to me.  It was very detailed, understandable and gave me two options to consider. Bill was very knowledgeable and thorough investigating my sprinkler issue. I agree with his findings.  I am waiting to do this work next spring.

I left a message for Edward and he responded quickly and we set up a meeting for him to come see the site and talk over my ideas for landscaping. He showed up on time and was very easy to get along with, patiently listening to my ideas. He was very agreeable to my overall idea of the plan (multi-trunk crepe myrtles with climbing roses on the wall behind, with several large boulders throughout California native/drought-tolerant plants) and he could help select plants/design to fill in the details. I had previously talked with 3-4 other landscapers who either didn't do "small" projects (95' x 7' is not small!) or they didn't have the capabilities (or didn't want) to install the large boulders i was envisioning (ie: trucking them from quarry/field and renting a bobcat to place them). I was relieved that Edward didn't even blink at my boulder idea, since they were a big part of my plan. I wasn't in a rush, so after a couple weeks, he submitted a bid. I was disappointed because It was significantly over my planned budget. Over the course of a few weeks we talked back and forth about how to modify the landscaping to get it closer to my budget. Admittedly, I was a little unrealistic about how much my plan was going to cost. Edward was very patient and gracious in working with me to an agreeable budget and scope of work. Once we agreed upon that, he submitted an illustrated plan on paper with full color photos and descriptions of the plants he wanted to use. Knowing a bit about plants/gardening, I am a bit picky with what goes in, so we swapped out a few that I wasn't thrilled with. Again, Edward took my substitutions in stride.
We agreed on a start date. Every day, Edward and his guys showed up right on time and got right to work. The guys were very professional and friendly. They didn't mind that I stood there watching them for most of the time! Placing the boulders was an arduous task and the guys were very patient with my precision placement of each enormous boulder, flipping & turing to get it just how I wanted. After rolling out the weed barrier, Edward and I went through and placed all the plants - moving and adjusting just so. Then when we gave them the go-ahead, they planted them just as they were placed - adding mulch & fertilizer tablets. They finished up with the irrigation and the pea-gravel. All said and done, it took them 3 days to accomplish.
My only gripe was that the installer guys didn't double-check the valve and emitter settings before they left - they had left the sprinklers running and I didn't catch it until the next day. Also, the valve was leaking a good amount. (not looking forward to next month's water bill!!!) I texted Edward and he came out the next day and fixed it. Being paranoid, I went out and checked all the 50+ emitters at each plant. They were all on the lowest setting and some were turned off completely! Not good for new plants (especially water-loving roses and crepe myrtles!) So, I went around and adjusted them all myself. I'm still not convinced how effective the emitters are, but I'll give them time and see how it goes.
Also, the Angie's List Coupon is not worded correctly - while he gave me a bit of a discount, Edward only gives 10% discount above a certain amount. Be sure to ask him beforehand.
All said and done, I really enjoyed working with Edward and his crew. Very professional and easy to get along with. He may not be the cheapest in town, but they work hard and are willing to work with you to make your project come together nicely. Thanks guys!! Can't wait for Spring!

    Fernando's Complete Landscape & Hardscape
Fernando is a very attentive service provider.  He was timely, professional, and computerized...which I loved!  Invoices and Estimates were all set up via email and were very timely.  He did EXACTLY what he said he would do when he said he would do it.
He responded promptly to any questions or concerns I had. If I wanted something adjusted, he took care of it.  If an adjustment I wanted would give me more piece of mind, he did it.
After installing the system, he tested it carefully and allowed me to carefully walk the entire system and inspect everything.  I feel great about his work.  PLUS, Fernando keeps a crew...which is important.  You can trust that the men working on your project are skilled and experienced.
I had some very delicate new plants that could have been easily hurt, and they were very careful - nothing got stepped on or hurt.  I am so pleased!  Give yourself some peace of mind and hire Fernando.  I highly recommend him.

It started off great.  I met with Simon and got a very nice fairly detailed estimate.  After some negotiation, we settled on a price and a timeline.  This all went great.  Then the work started. Simon sent his worker in to do the work, but he was typically only there at the beginning of any phase and always had to run off to some other job or commitment after an hour or so.  First, the tree work was done.  He subcontracted the tree trimming and that was fine.  It was done quickly and timely.  It looks great.

Then they graded the yard and added soil amendments.  The amendments were thin, especially since my yard had been bare dirt for a while and there was virtually no good topsoil.  I think this has come back to bite me.

Then they installed the sprinkler system.  They did not test the water pressure or volume to ensure that the number of heads/valve would work well.  If you have too many heads/valve, they won?t pop up, or throw water far enough.  Then once they laid out and installed the pipes, they also didn't test the pipes before back filling in the dirt.  They had a leak at one of the joints, and there were too many heads on several of the valves, so each head barely popped up.  But this wasn't even discovered until after the sod had been put in.  So to correct it, they had to roll back the sod, dig up the line to fix the leak, and dig a new trench to add an additional valve.

Then they installed the patio.  We wanted a stamped concrete patio with two tones.  Simon and I agreed on a light brown base with a darker highlight.  I had shown him pictures of what I wanted and he had given me a color palette from a concrete company where I picked out what I wanted.  They poured the concrete with the light brown already blended in.  Simon was here for most, but not all of the pouring, but then he left.  Then when they started to stamp the concrete and add the highlight color, which is a powder, he wasn?t here.  As they started adding the powder onto the concrete surface I thought it looked weird.  The powder was red!  I?m watching this, but by the time I realized that the powder was red, they had already applied a large section.  No one checked the powder color before the work was started.  I think the thing that really burned me was that Simon never admitted that it was his mistake.  He?s like, ?Oh, it will darken over time ? blah, blah.?  It didn?t darken at all!

Finally, they installed the sod.  That went OK, except for the aforementioned sprinkler issues that should have been caught much earlier.  But again over time, I noticed that some sod pieces looked dark green and others a much lighter green.  Even after several months there is still a lot of variation throughout the yard.  I think he purchased very cheap sod.  It was supposed to be a Bermuda-rye mix, but I found St Augustine in it too.  After only 2 months some areas are now looking very thin and sickly.  Some strips have died altogether.

He finally had to stain the concrete to get it close to what I wanted, but it is now basically just dark brown.  He just applied the sealant and it has streaks.

Bottom line, Simon is a nice guy, but he doesn?t supervise the work, he buys the cheapest materials and everything he does is just not quite right.  As far as I?m concerned he doesn?t take pride in his work, it is just do the job quickly, get the money, and move on to the next project.

    Dan the Handyman

I read reviews of handymen on Angie's list and decided to try Dan because he was so highly recommended. He is everything that people say he is.  He is always punctual, through, works quickly, gives a lot of attention to detail, has a wonderful work ethic, never wastes time and takes tremendous pride in his work. He is knowledgeable about so many things - it's really amazing.  He will look at a project and if he can't immediately figure out how to deal with the task at hand, he takes his time to figure out what needs to be done.  I know that if some thing seems impossible, Dan will figure out a way to get it done.  The projects he has completed for us look perfect - I think Dan is a real artist.  I also appreciate his suggestions about things, e.g., how high to hang pictures, type of molding to purchase, and that he will recommend someone if a job entails more time than he can give, or that he can't do alone.  He always has the correct tools and other things he needs to get the job done.  There is never any evidence that he has been drilling, etc. because he always cleans up after a job is completed.

Everyone has written about the wonderful attributes listed above that Dan possesses. But I want to add that he is genuinely a nice person.  He is professional, wonderful with animals, perceptive, creative, respectful, enjoys people and is has a wonderful sense of humor. It's obvious that he enjoys what he does and it is evident in his work.. We trust Dan completely. We appreciate all that he does for us and will continue to hire him. We strongly recommend Dan to everyone needing a handyman

It was awesome! Ken and Michelle really know the area and spent a lot of time with us going over each plant and our vision. We wanted a xeriscape landscape and we got just that! They stayed within our budget as well. They are very busy but it is definitely worth the wait. We get tons of compliments and fits right in our Altadena neighborhood. Will definitely use them for our backyard once we save up!
