Counseling & Mental Health reviews in Altadena

His diagnosis was right on, and his treatment was methodical and knowledgeable. He is not a therapist, but he does allow for 45 minutes of in-depth review and discussion. He is sometimes absent-minded and needs occasional reminders of our past discussions and treatment plans. This can be a little annoying, but he does know his stuff and has helped our family tremendously.

Update 2011:  We've been seeing Dr. Atkins for 4-1/2 years.  I believe he is still a very good diagnostician but over the past year or so, he's become more and more forgetful, often forgetting which meds and dosages he previously prescribed, not fully recalling discussions in appointments, etc.  He is a very good psychiatrist with a great reputation, but we're going to try someone else for awhile and see how that goes.

Update 2014:  After seeing another psychiatrist for 3 years since leaving Dr. Atkins, I can only state how horribly mis-treated our son had been with him. Although his original diagnosis was correct, his recommended course of treatment was highly ineffective. Dr. Atkins seemed to favor the newer drugs on the market, and had a whole sales brochure display of those drugs in his waiting room. Our new psychiatrist immediately removed our son from all 4 previous meds and started our son on one single, well-established Rx. He has responded better to this one medication than the whole med "cocktail" Dr. Atkins had used. In fact, our psychiatrist stated that some of those meds were ineffective at best, while at least one of them was contraindicated for our son's diagnosis.

Yes, the new psychiatrist is twice as expensive as Dr. Atkins was (the sad state of our medical system), but our son needs to see him less often, and the medications are fewer, and therefore cost us less overall. It's not even about the money. I am still quite shocked when I remember Dr. Atkins seeing my son on a Monday, and needing to be reminded of everything we had just discussed with him the Friday before. At the time we left him, he was still using yellow pads and our son's medical file was filled with notes and scraps of paper. I don't know if he has now computerized his records or if he is even still practicing, but I still don't think I would recommend him.
