  • I was with Mike during the project and offered my help on portions of the project. I have worked Habitat for Humanity for 13 years and know quite a lot about construction. I was very impressed with Mike's attention to detail and never cutting corners. His conversions are built to code and he uses good materials. I would highly recommend him for a contractor

  • Mike enclosed my daughter's carport in order to convert it to a garage.  His initial visit to discuss details went very well and I found him knowledgable and helpful in understanding the process.  He had a reputable garage door company come out to discuss how they would install the 16' door once the construction was finished by Mike.  The garage door company sent me a separate quote and I paid them directly.
Mike started first by drilling holes in the concrete carport floor where walls were to be built.  He then installed rebar in the holes using epoxy.  He then installed forms and attached reinforcing rebar to the above anchors.  The concrete was then poured for the stem walls.  After the concrete setup, he glued and used concrete screws to connect treated lumber to the new concrete stem walls.  Following this, the walls were constructed and screwed into place.  Then he installed an exterior door on the side.  Exterior siding was then screwed in place to match the existing siding.  Trim was cut and put in place as necessary as well as the 2x6  framing for the overhead garage.  Caulking was done as needed followed by paint.
He did the wiring for 2 front and 1 side garage lights, two new electrical outlets and a ceiling light.  He also did the wiring for the garage door electrical/controls.  I was very impressed with his electrical wiring skills and asked him where he learned them.  He told me his dad was an electrician and he helped him many times in the past.
He was very particular, making sure that the walls, side door and 16' garage door framing were all vertical and leveled properly.  He used screws for all of the construction which is much better than using nails.  He was very good to listen to and discuss recommendations that I had.  After he finished construction the garage door company came and installed the new 16' door without any problems.  The entire installation looks great.
I would highly recommend Mike to others.

  • We got three bids to enclose our two car carport into a garage. We live in South Tempe, where there are a large number of these carports.
The usual advice is to go with the middle bidder. Cook Remodeling came in a bit higher than the other two. However, they were by far the most professional and personable. We appreciated the honesty that our project was going to cost a bit more than we anticipated, and we were willing to pay more to ensure quality. This was our first major remodel / addition, and it was somewhat nerve wracking to put your trust in someone and spend so much money. Long story short, we are extremely happy with our new garage and the service we received. It was money well spent.
The project began on-time. As it progressed, we became obsessed with other garages in the area and came up with a few alterations. Cook Remodeling was very receptive to any changes we requested, and even had some suggestions themselves to have a better outcome.
We've now had our garage for over a year and it's fantastic. We'll be looking to redo our pool/patio area in a few years and Cook Remodeling will be our first choice!

  • The two-man crew who built our shed was a little late arriving to the job site. That's the reason for the 'B' grade for 'Punctuality'. However, in fairness to them, they had to drive from Phoenix to Ash Fork (normally a 2.5 hour drive), got sidetracked by an emergency request in Flagstaff, and stayed well into the night (10:30pm!) in order to complete the job, in the dark no less. Thankfully I had a small light and my own generator, but still. They DID communicate to me that they would be late, but it was a bit of an inconvenience to sit around in the cold and dark until they finished, and then to move our items (sitting outside) into the shed (in the dark) upon its completion.
The shed turned out great. It's very high quality, very secure, very attractive and very sturdy. It's sometimes used as a 'cabin' for camping, and it will last us a long, long time. The price was fairly affordable, compared to other solutions, but is still quite a chunk of change to drop on a 'shed'. In our case, we had little option, given the type of structure we wanted, the remoteness of our land, and the inability to truck in a pre-built unit without cutting down additional trees. It's pretty cool that Tuff Shed can transport everything needed for your shed on a small trailer and build the unit on-site. It even came pre-painted (though the guys also had secondary touch-up paint, which they left with us).
The purchasing process was simple, and there were plenty of examples at the Tuff Shed location we visited. The only complaint that I'll state is that Tuff Shed will want to charge you $75 for 'generator rental' if you do not have power at the location where you want your shed built. This wasn't communicated to me up front, probably because they didn't ask if I had power at my location. Luckily I saw something about this online prior to construction, and I proactively called and asked, or the construction might not have happened at all due to lack of power. I ended up buying a generator for not much more than twice the $75 Tuff Shed wanted to charge me for a rental. Given the price of the unit, it still surprises me a little that Tuff Shed wouldn't just charge customers the cost of the gas for the generator, and a small hourly fee for its use, if anything at all. It should be considered a cost of doing business.
At the end of the day, my wife and I are very satisfied with our shed, and would recommend Tuff Shed to our friends and family. Just keep the above in mind.

  • Each job we scheduled with GBP was done on time, even with all the changes we kept asking for. Our final product was even better then we thought it would be. GBP is an excellent contractor to work with. Give them a try you will not be sorry.

  • Complete disaster. A nightmare. Jesus Osario came highly recommended from a friend of a friend, who lives in an upscale home in Scottsdale. Jesus Osario performed many upgrades in her home. I personally inspected the bathroom and was impressed by the complexity of the job. This client held Jesus in high regard, as did her neighbor who also allowed me to view the good work he had done in her home. Jesus' price was way below the other bids I recieved. I wrote everything I wanted out, as much as I could without having construction experience. Jesus agreed to my terms and confidently began work along with his crew, some of who did not speak much English. Because Jesus came so highly recommended and because I saw his past work, it took me a very long time to realize that for whatever reason, Jesus and his crew were unskilled and incompetent. I know this sounds harsh, but - especially to my surprise- this is the truth. After rebuilding the cabinets over and over again Jesus could still not get the sizes and porportions right. My kitchen is not difficult at all. it is a hallway with cabinets on either side. I wanted a plain, white kitchen-flat panels. Can't get much simpler than this. Jesus could not ever get it right. He must have rebuilt the kitchen two or three times over- extending the remodeling project 6 months (it should have taken 2-3 at most) and putting my household through h***. I even measured everything out for him and drew a diagram. Unfortunately he would leave those drawings at my house and tried to do everything from memory at his shop. He would insist that he knew what he was doing, and that if something was wrong he would be glad to fix it free of charge. That all he wanted was to make his clients happy..... Some major issues is that he presented me his ROC liscense. The truth is that he let is liscense expire and is practicing illegally. Secondly, he sprayed my cabinets with automotive paint- inside the house. This is highly toxic, and shoud have been done in a shop instead of inside my home. He forgot to use primer the first paint job and so the wood began to bleed through the white paint. So then he had to spray again with primer, then spray white over that. He never let the paint cure, so the paint easily peeled right off in sheets. The paint was peeling even before he was done with the job. He sprayed multiple times but never figured out that if you spray wet over wet, there will be adhesion issues. It was so toxic we couldn't sleep in the house. Later I found out It is ILLEGAL to spray car paint inside a residence. The overspray and particulates got into the duct work- my house was a mess of white dust for 6 months, and a highly toxic environment. Also, the contract states that I was to recieve Maple Doors- ALL WOOD BOXES and Doors. instead, I got cheap junk for some of the cabinets, and solid pine for others. It is a hodgepodge. Jesus' crew caused much damage to my home. They scratched and ruined the finish on my brand new stainless steel Bosch Fridge because they didn't bother to move it out of the way. After I caught them painting over WET drywall mud to fill a 1" gap without putting anything sturdy to fill the gap first, I realized that I might know more than they did about construction! I decided to get involved in the work process. I dropped everything in my life and attempted to sand and paint along side the workers so I could keep an eye on them and manage the crew. My tenant (who I highly respect) reported that his $350 watch was missing. I can't prove anything but default evidence points to one of Jesus' crew members. Eventually I had to face facts- and fire Jesus. I didn't finish paying him, but I paid him too much. I spent another 2K on handymen taking apart and redoing and refinishing what should have taken him a few days to do. He cost me more than just money- stress, time, and rental income. Now my kitchen is complete, but it is not what I signed up for. My cabinet doors are warping and are not evenly hung. I have concerns that the whole thing might fall apart in a year or two. This man should not be practicing construction and I can't figure out how he managed to do such a wonderful job at my friends' home. the only silver lining is that through my distress I discovered Angies List. If I had known about this site I could have found a good company for a decent price and avoided all the hassle. Now I'm using Angie's list for everything and I LOVE it!

  • Wow. Where do I begin? I begin by saying that if you are ever in the unfortunate situation of needing an emergency service company to help you through a devastating catastrophy, do not rely on Universal Restoration. Randal Cloud is very personable and friendly, as is his crew members. He is prompt, helpful and knowledgable upon first contact. He has experience as a claims adjuster for an insurance company thus can use his skills as a liason between you and the insurance company. He has similar software that an insurance company might use to determine restoration repair replacement payments. The down side of Universal Restoration is that they are more concerned with milking the insurance company than serving your needs. My household lived in soot, darkness and ash for almost a week wondering why the company could not come over with a cleaning crew, or someone to clean the air ducts, or to start demolision. I had to twist his arm to move forward with each step, even to submit an estimate for repairs to the insurance company! He was eventually fired after gross negligence, incompetence and unprofessional behavior. Too upsetting to continue the details fo this report. When the dust settled, his billing was unreasonably high. State Farm is a generous company with thier estimations. They allocated $725 for drywall, Universal charged me $975. that is just the tip of the iceburg.
