  • Just had Nick and his Scape Tech crew finish landscaping the front and back yards of our newly constructed house. We started with not much more than dirt and mud but within a week and a half we had beautiful front and back yards. They started on time and stayed on our job until it was complete. They showed up early, worked late and kept the work site neat. Even on the last day there was no rushing or hurrying to get done. Nick was excellent to work with - easy to communicate and stay in touch with and his guys were great as well. Nick listened to what we were looking for, offered some excellent suggestions,incorporated some nice touches along the way that we wouldn't have even thought about, and was very open to input from us the entire time. He and his crew are sticklers for details and care about what they do. A great example was the extension on our existing pavers driveway. The crew didn't just add on to the edges - they took old pavers out and mixed them with the new. We added to both sides but now even we can't tell where the old pavers ended and new pavers began. That's unlike several other jobs in our neighborhood where you can see a very clear distinction between the old and the new. We would not hesitate to use Nick and Scape Tech again - and we highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality, professional landscaping.

  • This was originally written in September but posted to the wrong account.  Subsequently, one of the trees we saved, which I was told was an orange tree, ended up being a grapefruit tree.  So now I need to purchase another orange tree (which we apparently removed in the process.)
    This is difficult to write, because I'm am very happy with final product.  But I got frustrated with the lack of good communication.  This was an issue I addressed with Bret upfront, because I had experienced it somewhat during the design process and then read about it in some reviews.  
    From the beginning:  I found Outdoor Xcapes at a Home Show.  I had Bret come over and look at what I wanted done, and we decided to design my overall wish list to see where it would fall in the budget.  It was a great design, but budget concerns had me take out items and cut costs where i could.  We went through 2 or 3 design modifications.  At our last meeting, we discussed final changes, set a tentative date to start.  I had written down all of the changes I wanted and, mistakenly, thought Bret would either redo the design or write an addendum to it.  
    We set a start date of 8/24 and they said they'd be done in a week to ten days.  The reviews and references said they did come in with a big crew and got things done fast, which appealed to me.  (I had been working with another company as well, and chose Outdoor Xcapes based on their design and fast completion.)  On 8/21, Jesse called and said they had a crew available and could start demo work.  They worked Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and pretty much completed demo  On Monday morning the crew came and started work.  The majority of the work was done the following Friday.  That said, during that week there were a number mis-communication issues because Bret hadn't updated the plan and the crew was going against the plan!  Here's some examples:
    *  On the BBQ island I wanted smooth stucco, drawers, no refrigerator.  Luckily the crew asked me about the refrigerator, but they had to redo the stucco because there was no note to keep it smooth.  The drawers were finally installed on 9/22.
    *  Plants:  Bret and I went to the nursery and picked out plants, trees, trellises.  He said he would get a list to me (which he never did).  The wrong trellises were delivered, and one of the plants we looked at for ground cover wasn't in the group (I didn't remember the names of all of the plants, but this particular one was unusual.  Jesse was willing to go get them, but since I wasn't sure of what the plant was called, we decided not to).  
    *  The wrong pavers were delivered initially.  Luckily we caught it as they were being delivered. 
    *  I had three areas of river rock that I wanted removed.  Bret told Jesse to remove two of them and leave one (that is a boundary between lots) and by the time I caught it, we didn't have enough of the other rock to trade it out.  
    *  Bret and I initially had discussed installing pavers on the driveway.  To cut costs, we took that out of the project.  But, we discussed how we could remove the paint from the driveway; he said he'd check with Jesse.  I mistakenly assumed that was part of the project; it never was completed and since I didn't have it in writing (my error), I didn't have much to fall back on.
    They completed the majority of the project on 8/28 and came back the following week to install the woks for the water feature and get it up and running.  I had a couple of issues with it initially, and they were very responsive in coming over and looking at it.  
    The crew was amazing.  Very professional, very hard working.  They were generally here at 7am and working some days until 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
    And, even with some of the miscommunication, the crew didn't hesitate to make it right.  I come from an environment where process and quality assurance are important.  In looking back at the entire process, I would recommend that the customer ensure that OE has, in writing, all of the changes that have been discussed; that the sales person, supervisor and customer sit down for 15-30 minutes on the FIRST day to ensure that are all in agreement with the plan the crew is looking at, and finally, that someone from OE meets with the customer at the end of the project to do a quality assurance review and punch list.
    Start of project, 8/21;  totally completed, 9/22.

  • John and Connie are very professional and responsive.  I appreciated the quality of work done, the attention to cleanliness in the house and the follow thorough on some items we had discussed (John made a couple of visits due to need to get a couple of items).  I've already requested his service for another project and recommended him to friends.

  • Chris, the owner, came over and worked out a plan for our yard which included a detailed drawing. The work was supposed to be completed in two days. On the first day several of the plants were planted in the wrong place and several plants were missing from the order. No one seemed to know where several of the plants were to be planted. The pine tree we were expecting to have planted was missing from the order and it took another ten days until they came back to plant it. Also, we noticed a missing uplight to one of the trees, but installation was delayed until the pine tree was delivered. A day after the major planting job was completed, we noticed that the plants looked a little stressed. We discovered that the irrigation system had been turned off so no plants were being watered. Another issue that was problematic was the irrigation system. We had asked Chris to be sure to have the lines checked to all new plants to make sure they were working properly. Unfortunately, this was not done, so the plants were not being watered properly. We advised CYC that the irrigation lines had not been checked, but they did not fix the lines until nearly a week later. One thing I noticed was that all of the landscape plants were listed on the contract as five-gallon plants. However, many of the plants looked to be quite small, more like one-gallon plants. The explanation given was that they could look like one gallon plants because they may have been transplanted from one gallon to five gallon containers recently. After much back and forth and many visits by CYC people, the plants are finally in their correct location and they fixed the irrigation lines as promised. Overall, we are happy with the plants and the design that was created by Chris; however, the process was not smooth and there were too many problems for us to recommend this company.

  • Everything went very well from start to finish.  They bid against 4 other companies and we were most impressed with their excellent communication, ideas and great pricing.  The work was completed very quickly and we are very pleased with the completed project, so much so that they are now in the process of completing 2 other projects for us now.

  • First I want to say that Lisa the gal who answers the phone is a very nice lady. After that, it was all Dennis Lee the owner and his crew of hard workers that came and did all the work. They came on time and worked all day until the job was done. They walked me through everything that was done when they were finished and everything looked great and worked great. I thought they did a great job and the price was very reasonable. The extra lights in the back yard made a huge difference. Would definitely recommend and use them in the future.

  • I really liked Steve Marr, he's the guy we worked with. I really like his suggestions and he listens to us and paid attention to what we wanted. He made really helpful suggestions that I haven't thought of. We love the yard, it's great. They did a great job and they got there quickly and worked hard. I think the price was good.

  • I found that I paid for a sales person to come to my home and try to sell me products and services I did not want to buy.  I was hoping for someone with electrical experience to fix our outside lighting. That was not made clear to me when I bought the “special” from them. I feel I wasted $50.
