  • Just had Nick and his Scape Tech crew finish landscaping the front and back yards of our newly constructed house. We started with not much more than dirt and mud but within a week and a half we had beautiful front and back yards. They started on time and stayed on our job until it was complete. They showed up early, worked late and kept the work site neat. Even on the last day there was no rushing or hurrying to get done. Nick was excellent to work with - easy to communicate and stay in touch with and his guys were great as well. Nick listened to what we were looking for, offered some excellent suggestions, incorporated some nice touches along the way that we wouldn't have even thought about, and was very open to input from us the entire time. He and his crew are sticklers for details and care about what they do. A great example was the extension on our existing pavers driveway. The crew didn't just add on to the edges - they took old pavers out and mixed them with the new. We added to both sides but now even we can't tell where the old pavers ended and new pavers began. That's unlike several other jobs in our neighborhood where you can see a very clear distinction between the old and the new. We would not hesitate to use Nick and Scape Tech again - and we highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality, professional landscaping.

  • Nick was great to work with. He listened to our ideas and had some of his own about adding a small amount of stone to some areas and rounding some areas--which made a huge difference in how the patio looks. He also suggested putting lighting on steps around the pool which looks great and shifting our BBQ a little to one side, opening up a sitting space. We wanted the work done when we weren't in town and he was accurate on when they could start and finish. His crew came in, did the job, and finished even faster than we thought they would. He starts a job and finishes it before moving on to the next so that the work isn't stretched out for long periods. He took us to a tile company to look at travertine samples. He did a complimentary CAD drawing of our yard as we also want to do some tweaking to our landscaping. He kept us informed of the schedule to start and was available for any questions we had. Our patio, pool, and ramada area look even better than we had envisioned. Nick and his crew did such a great job for us. We would definitely use him again.

  • Nick first came to my home and surveyed the yard and provided an estimate from our discussion. The overall goal was to reduce the lawn area that required water. Once we had a design in mind, his crew came scalped the areas of lawn and sprayed these areas with grass killer. They did two applications and thoroughly removed any vegetation. The crew was very professional and knowledgeable. They came early each day at the expected time and worked steadily all day. Because there were a variety of surfaces to cover, the order of the work had to be timed and they did an excellent job of prioritizing. Materials were delivered on time and moved quickly from in front of the house to the back yard. Each day they cleaned up the work site before leaving. When all was finished, they removed any debris and hosed the street to clean the delivery points. Finally, they prepared the remaining grass area, spread mulch and seed. They designed the irrigation system to match the new yard, relocated the controller and the valve boxes and set the schedule. Two weeks later, the lawn is almost completely renewed. The owner, Nick, works directly with the crew and is at the job site almost every day. He was very flexible to make changes as we moved through the project. He has a lot of experience in design and color selection. I was very pleased with the result and will have them back in the Fall to do the planting of individual areas.

  • Masterscape was ontime, on budget, and professional. Once materials were delivered, they were done that same week. They cleared my backyard, laid down 940 sq. ft. of stone pavers, edged 4o lf of pool desk with travertine tiles, installed 35 lf of colored curbing with a couple of boulders, and added 4 tons of pea gravel. All work was done as promised. The only issue I have is my cat thinks the areas with pea gravel are her litter box. I will be using Masterscape to complete the softscape areas for the next phase of the project - and try to talk them into taking the cat.

  • I contacted Beverlee through the phone number listed on Angie's List.  She was friendly, cordial, professional, and very thorough.  She came out to measure the job on a Saturday and was able to organize the crew to come perform the work within 5 days of the initial consultation.

The crew themselves were extremely good.  They were fast, did an excellent job, and cleaned everything up very well.  The job site was left cleaner than when they arrived.  The crew consulted us at various stages during the process to discuss options and asked how to proceed.  This was on the parts where the pavers bordered existing structures.  This was very appreciated since other crews tend to simply make these decisions themselves, based on what is easiest and fastest for them.  I'm extremely detail oriented, and I've had to get other landscapers to redo things up to 3 times before I was satisfied.  Even scrutinizing the job they did, I cannot find one single thing that I would want done differently.  My only 'regret' is that they left too quickly and my wife didn't think to tip them.  I really feel that they went over and above with the job they did.

I would highly recommend Exotic Scapes, and would not hesitate to hire them again in the future.  They did everything right the first time, and their price was very competitive.

  • We decided to hire Daryl and his crew in November 2014 for a underground drainage and landscape renovation of our back and frontyards with new plants, trees, rock and pavers. The reason for our late review is because the number one reason we needed them to do the work was because of drainage/grading issues and needed some time to pass after heavy rainfalls to gauge how well his system would hold up after a major rains in the fall of 2014.
Daryl and his crew are very professional and provided good insight. on what to do based on our drainage/grading issues. On day one of the project we had heavy rains come down and they dug trenches around the home with ponchos on so that the rain could be guided away from our home and to the street. Most companies probably would have cancelled and not shown up because it was raining so badly. Green and Trim decided to do what was right for us and to protect our home since the drainage and grading was so poor around our entire home and to alleviate any further damage to the inside of the home.
They also broke up about 400 sq ft of concrete in our backyard and replaced it with turf and pavers to help with the flow of water away from our home and patio.. Underground drainage tubes were put into the ground on both sides of the home and so far this has been helpful to a large degree.
Plants, trees, turf and rock were added after the drainage and grading renovation had been complete. We love the look of our backyard and enjoy the views. We use the paver patio as a firepit area and use it a ton!! Mostly, we have enjoyed that the water so far does not come into or next to our home.
There were several instances where we needed Darryl and his crew to back and finish some last minute items and to install more lighting after the project had been completed. Darryl has a good eye for details and is just a good person to work. Working in the real estate business, my wife and I have very high expectations of contractors because so many of them have a poor work ethic and are just plain lazy. So, we were not the easiest for him to work with.
The price paid for services was right on target with our goals as well.
There is still a portion of the project that we would like to continue to further help our drainage by providing drainage tubing all the way to the street on the East side of the home. Hopefully we can do this soon!
The only issue we have is that we never  received a final receipt or any warranty information for his services. We would like to get that information.  I hope we can partner again to complete the final phase of the project that he recommended.
I want to add that his crew was always polite and worked hard to meet our criteria. I wish them the best and please give them a chance to make your landscaping needs a success!

  • This was originally written in September but posted to the wrong account.  Subsequently, one of the trees we saved, which I was told was an orange tree, ended up being a grapefruit tree.  So now I need to purchase another orange tree (which we apparently removed in the process.)
This is difficult to write, because I'm am very happy with final product.  But I got frustrated with the lack of good communication.  This was an issue I addressed with Bret upfront, because I had experienced it somewhat during the design process and then read about it in some reviews.
From the beginning:  I found Outdoor Xcapes at a Home Show.  I had Bret come over and look at what I wanted done, and we decided to design my overall wish list to see where it would fall in the budget.  It was a great design, but budget concerns had me take out items and cut costs where i could.  We went through 2 or 3 design modifications.  At our last meeting, we discussed final changes, set a tentative date to start.  I had written down all of the changes I wanted and, mistakenly, thought Bret would either redo the design or write an addendum to it.
We set a start date of 8/24 and they said they'd be done in a week to ten days.  The reviews and references said they did come in with a big crew and got things done fast, which appealed to me.  (I had been working with another company as well, and chose Outdoor Xcapes based on their design and fast completion.)  On 8/21, Jesse called and said they had a crew available and could start demo work.  They worked Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and pretty much completed demo  On Monday morning the crew came and started work.  The majority of the work was done the following Friday.  That said, during that week there were a number mis-communication issues because Bret hadn't updated the plan and the crew was going against the plan!  Here's some examples:
    *  On the BBQ island I wanted smooth stucco, drawers, no refrigerator.  Luckily the crew asked me about the refrigerator, but they had to redo the stucco because there was no note to keep it smooth.  The drawers were finally installed on 9/22.
    *  Plants:  Bret and I went to the nursery and picked out plants, trees, trellises.  He said he would get a list to me (which he never did).  The wrong trellises were delivered, and one of the plants we looked at for ground cover wasn't in the group (I didn't remember the names of all of the plants, but this particular one was unusual.  Jesse was willing to go get them, but since I wasn't sure of what the plant was called, we decided not to).
    *  The wrong pavers were delivered initially.  Luckily we caught it as they were being delivered.
    *  I had three areas of river rock that I wanted removed.  Bret told Jesse to remove two of them and leave one (that is a boundary between lots) and by the time I caught it, we didn't have enough of the other rock to trade it out.
    *  Bret and I initially had discussed installing pavers on the driveway.  To cut costs, we took that out of the project.  But, we discussed how we could remove the paint from the driveway; he said he'd check with Jesse.  I mistakenly assumed that was part of the project; it never was completed and since I didn't have it in writing (my error), I didn't have much to fall back on.
They completed the majority of the project on 8/28 and came back the following week to install the woks for the water feature and get it up and running.  I had a couple of issues with it initially, and they were very responsive in coming over and looking at it.
The crew was amazing.  Very professional, very hard working.  They were generally here at 7am and working some days until 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
And, even with some of the miscommunication, the crew didn't hesitate to make it right.  I come from an environment where process and quality assurance are important.  In looking back at the entire process, I would recommend that the customer ensure that OE has, in writing, all of the changes that have been discussed; that the sales person, supervisor and customer sit down for 15-30 minutes on the FIRST day to ensure that are all in agreement with the plan the crew is looking at, and finally, that someone from OE meets with the customer at the end of the project to do a quality assurance review and punch list.
Start of project, 8/21;  totally completed, 9/22.

  • Craig and his staff were a joy to be around. They were very punctual and worked hard from approx. 6:00 am to 3:30-4:00 pm with only a brief lunch break. There was absolutely no problems, did everything he told us would be done, plus some. The backyard looks like something from a magazine. It is beautiful and we are very happy with the results. We couldn't be happier with the total, final outcome. When the weather cools off a bit we will out in the backyard a lot!
We would highly recommend AZ Native Scapes and Craig Rawlings to anyone wanting to redo their front/backyards.

  • My husband called one morning to tell me he bought a bunch of boulders and to figure out where I want them placed.  I was annoyed and alarmed, as I generally like to research and plan before large purchases.  When Jake delivered the boulders he also gave us an estimate for cleaning up and re-landscaping our pool area, which had been neglected for years and was overgrown with weeds.  While it concerned me that he had no Angie's list history, he was upfront about wanting to build his reputation up and also showed us his brother's landscaping business, which he had been a part of until he became independent.  His assessment of our yard was reassuring.  We have had various quotes for a clean up that we were not happy with - some claimed that having the sheet under gravel will end weeds for good, while others claimed it would be a complete waste.  Jake explained that while yes, eventually we will get weeds over the sheet, it would greatly reduce and slow the weeds enough to make them manageable in other ways.  Other companies would have buried or only cleaned around the large river rocks that once formed a dry riverbed (but were beginning to sink into the soil) but Jake said his guys would remove, clean up, and re-locate those rocks into the new landscape, and he did a spectacular job.  The boulders looked fantastic - They all look like they've been there all along.  My husband's best impulse-buy ever!

  • Original fire pit had stopped working. Called Craig on Wed and he was at our house the next day. We decided to completely rebuild the pit. He was at our house on Sat with two men and spent the day building a completely new pit with stacked stone exterior. Professional and great attention to detail. Cleaned up and done by 5:30 Sat evening. Would have him back for any landscaping task we might encounter.
