Hospital Care reviews in New River

  • This was an actual emergency room visit. It was actually for my very elderly 96-year-old father. He had a clot in his leg and he was wearing compression stockings for it. He was complaining about the stocking, so we went back to the doctor and said can we take this off. The doctor sent him over to have a sonogram done, which they did and they discovered that the clot had grown in size. So they sent him over to the emergency room. After much discussion and fortunately our family physician was not in the office that day and when we called back to the office they got another physician who we had not dealt with. The other physician gave them permission to insert, I guess it would be called, a stent in his vein. So we go in, because the doctor said go ahead and to it, I am sure had we talked to our doctor our doctor would have said do not do it. So, we go in and they decided that this is something that needs to be done. I went down through the emergency room to the emergency operating room and this was for an outpatient procedure. I walked down with him and specifically said you cannot go through his neck to insert this, because he has a blockage problem in his neck. If you got to go in, you got to go in through the groin area. So, we went in and they went through his neck, and they got in there and found out oops we cannot go through the neck, we got to go through the leg. So, he now has two major incisions, one through the neck and one through the leg. They sent him back to the emergency room to recover and at this point the man has had nothing to eat or drink since 9 o'clock in the morning and it is going on to 6 o'clock at night. We are in Phoenix, he is dehydrated, and he has not had anything to eat. The nurse in the emergency room comes in and says, we can give him a sandwich, but he cannot sit up because he has got to lie flat to make sure everything works the way it is supposed to for the next 2 hours. At which point, we are telling them he is 96 years old, he has trouble swallowing anyway, and you want to give him a dry curd sandwich to eat. So then after 2 hours they said they are going to send him home. Well the man, when he walked in he walked in on his own, he could barely stand on his own. So, we were literally arguing with them keep him in at least for observation, he is very shaky, they said nope we cannot do that, send him home and so they sent him home. As soon as we got home he threw up for the anesthesia, literally we put him in bed and he fell out of the bed. So we had to call the ambulance to have him transported back to the hospital, at which point again, because he was so shaky he could not sit up, they sent him home again. They said you have to take him back to your family physician, which we did the next morning after we had to wheel him in, because the poor guy could not even walk at that point. My overall impression of the emergency room there is a flat out "F." I would never go to that emergency room again ever in my life even if this were the last one around. He died 10 days after that. He fought especially with his second trip to the hospital. He was taken back by ambulance and he was in a neck brace, he was in the neck brace for hours, before they were able to take it off.
