Door Installation reviews in Anthem

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Door was ordered Jan 31st 2018 Door was installed April 12, 2018 HOW IT ARRIVED: Custom iron security door arrived beautiful and and craftsmanship looked good. The design we chose was a solid iron inset with powder coating. After installation, the door looked beautiful. Taking a closer look at the door, I did notice some things I was not happy with. I am a picky person to start, a perfectionist at everything I do, and I have painting experience with metal. WHAT I NOTICED DURING MY PERSONAL INSPECTION: 1) There were some pitting and tiny cracks in the iron design that concerned me with rust later on. 2) There were a few flaws in the door screen frame such as the screen frame not square with door frame, pushing against door handle hardware, it appeared to be out of alignment and screws crooked. When disassembled for cleaning, it was warped. 3) Phillips head screws utilized on the frame and hinges with only a few one way screws which the salesman briefed we would be getting all one way screws. Correction: Steel Shield replaced with one way screws 4) Thresh hold not caulked/sealed which would allow bugs to enter Correction: Steel Shield caulked the joints 5.) Door sweep rubber seal on bottom of door was not touching the thresh hold to seal for bugs Correction: Steel Shield re-drilled holes and lowered the door sweep 6.) One hinge had powder coating chip off exposing bare metal Correction: Steel shield replaced the hinges 7.) Security Door frame was not secured tightly to the wood frame of my home (gaps for a burglars crow bar) Correction: Steel Shield Re-secured the frame with one way screws 8.) Door sweep metal frame on bottom of door had exposed bare metal on the end from cutting during installation Correction by Steel Shield: touch up paint applied AFTER 6 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP & MAINTENANCE (OCT 2018): 1) Cleaned the door as outlined in Steel Shield instructions on 8 OCT 2018 and noticed while cleaning rust forming inside pits, and welds in the security door; my white rag was orange from rust in certain areas, huh oh, not good.... 2) Seemed as if the finish was bleeding a black tar residue in some areas of the iron design inset 3) Rust in weld spots as if the powder coating did not adhere to certain areas leaving a hairline crack in the finish allowing rust to form ACTION TAKEN TO REMEDY OUR CONCERNS: 1) I explained to Steel Shield what was going on, sent them photos of our concerns. Michael at Steel Shield was very professional, he apologized and set up an appointment to return to our home and remove the security door for re-finishing. 2) Security Door was sand blasted and refinished resulting in an beautiful finish with no pits or cracks and NO RUST 3) Screen Frame was rebuilt and matches the door frame perfectly now 4) Installer did an excellent job installing the door on 23 OCT 5) Door was repaired and back on my home in a week, looks excellent! END RESULT: 1) We are extremely happy with the Security Door looks, function and finish 2) Steel Shield stands behind their work, warranty and quality 3) This is a top notch Company for Security Doors 4) I think I was just one of those few who had a bad experience and it does happen as we all know, like buying a new car, there may or may not be flaws requiring warranty work... 5) We are very happy with Steel Shield, their practices, timing response, and how they made it right for us WHAT WE DID AFTER FINAL CORRECTION & REFINISHING: 1) We wrote a personal note to all the people involved with crafting, finishing and installing the door and gave them a $10 Subway gift card to grab a bite to eat on us as a token of our appreciation for quality of work performed. We felt that was important to let the workers know they are appreciated. 2) We hand delivered the notes and gift cards to Steel Shield CEO, Michael 3) Michael is a great CEO and a very good person who cares about his business, we did a tour of the shop while we were there and everyone is very friendly 4) The doors in the powder coat booth appeared to have been properly prepared for powder coating (I didn't see any rust or grease, etc...on a door being painted) RECOMMENDATIONS: 1) If you are having repairs done, beware of the grinder they "must use" to remove one way screws. The sparks that fly from the grinding is actually tiny chinks of metal flying and they can or may hit the powder coating surface and pit the paint, stick into the paint and is not visible to the eye and will cause tiny rust spots later on. When it starts, it won't stop like cancer. 2) It's critical to inspect the doors finish and screen frame fitment on the door prior to installation for any flaws or concerns you may have; better to correct before they install it 3) It's critical to have the door installed correctly and precisely the first time to prevent return repairs using a grinder to remove screws 4) May even be a better idea to go look at the door at their shop prior to them bringing it to your home; saves everyone a headache 5) Grinder: maybe a Dremel is a better option with a leather sheet hung on the door to protect it from these particles flying, hitting the door, sticking into the powder coating finish and preventing pits/paint surface damage We would use Steel Shield again, they are a great company!

  • Salesman in home experience: Answered all our questions, explained the process and how the installation would be performed. Always returned our calls and answered emails. Color samples are a bit small so, best to go in the store showroom and they will show you the color on an actual completed door. Also best to go to the showroom for door handle color choice. The Waiting Period: They are busy, ordered the door 31 JAN 2018 and installation occurred on 12 APR 2018, no problem waiting for a quality door. Expect to wait and understand they are busy. Showroom Experience: They are great in the showroom, answer all you questions, and will even allow you in the back to see completed doors which is awesome. Installation: Installer arrived and seemed very professional. I explained that I like to watch to ensure I see how things are being installed. Installer was nice and stated he didn't like someone looking over his shoulder, he liked being left alone. I gave him that respect, turned the radio on, showed him the bathroom and water dispenser. Installation Results: Door looked great however there were concerns that required them to return to complete the installation errors. They did ask for description and pictures of concerns. I emailed them numerous pictures and described the concerns in detail. - Trim pieces that was cut during installation left exposed shiny metal edges that could be seen easily, some pieces were not cut to proper length and didn't look appealing (They returned later date, repaired the concern with touch up paint, re-drilled some holes, re-aligned trim pieces and applied touch up paint) - Screen frame insert not centered on the door and not straight on the edges, if you look closely it appears bent and sitting against the door handle hardware (could not repair due to door handle hardware hole already cut which prevents altering; acceptable as is, experienced person would notice it right away, normal person would not look for it, so we let it go as is). The only way to fix this is to replace the entire door, once the hole is cut for the handle, that's it, no moving a screen frame with handle in the way. - Metal frame for security door not seated against home's existing wood frame leaving a gap for a pry bar (installer returned, removed door and properly secured the frame, then re-installed security door) - One way screws were mixed with Phillips head screws when we were briefed by salesman that all screws would be "one way screws" (installer returned and had to disassemble the door and re-install to correct the frame and hinge 1 way screws. There is a cover plate covering the door frame requiring door removal to correct) - Door sweep was not coming into contact with the thresh hold allowing insects to enter and thresh hold was not caulked properly (installer returned and adjusted the sweep and re-caulked the gaps) - After repair and installation, we do get lots of compliments on the door and we love it. Just need to lube the hinges and locks every couple months. Hinges started squeaking and the door would not close on its own (WD 40 does the trick and you have to play with the gas return shock adjustment to get the door the way you want it) - Installer - great young man, takes pride in what he does, but he wasn't happy to return for repairs and asked why I didn't point all this out when he was there? Had to tell him, I did stand outside but you said it made you a little uncomfortable, I explained to you I am a perfectionist, you said "me too", so I left you alone with complete trust. I just think he met his match with me being meticulous about how I do things (military does it to you). I think it made him better for the future jobs, they did listen to my complaint, respond, return for repairs and I appreciate that. Business response to complaints: - Dealt with secretary or representative in an office that asked for an email with photos and detailed description of concerns - Manager approved to send installer to return for repairs and Secretary called/emailed me to set up appointment date time for repairs - Would be nice to have the manager directly deal with these concerns with the customer versus a secretary relaying messages from the manager to the customer - If you have problems, "Go and ask to speak with the manager", bring photos, ask the manager to come to your residence. - Make sure before you agree and sign off for the work, you know who you will be talking to when there is a problem, you see what they look like, you know their name, you meet them, you have direct contact with the manager, and you fully understand the install process and repair process if something goes wrong. 6 Months later: - Cleaned the door OCT 2018 as directed and found little rust spots in the powder coat all over the center decorative metal insert and at weld spots. Seems that the powder coating is porous in some areas allowing rust to form and bleeding some dark brown substance in some spots. - Rust spots do wipe away with soap and water however, not sure what's going to happen 5 years from now. Anything that starts to rust will not stop. Cleaning with water as outlined in their instructions will only contribute to more rust. Powder coat wax is the key to prevent oxygen from entering the porous surface which is not listed in their care guide. - I would recommend you request to see the metal door and frame at their shop after fabrication and paint preparation before they apply the powder coating to ensure the surface has been properly blasted, clean, free of oil, surface rust and contaminates - Still lubricating hinges and locks every couple months - Gas shock seems weak and door doesn't want to completely close on its own, still trying to figure out the adjustments - The door does look good and we are ok with it, however I just think for the price ($1364.00) they may be rushing some steps including finish and installation due to demand for the product which is affecting quality Overall I think this is a good business however, I would have waited another month to get it done the right way the first time. Also, I don't think rust spots appearing in tiny spots all over on a steel powder coated door in Phoenix Arizona should be appearing after 6 months (rush job, poor surface preparation). Warranty will not cover this rust which is not right in my opinion. Should be at least 5yr warranty on rust appearing if it's done properly and not caused by a scratch or damage from customer. I need another door and hesitant to go back to this company from prior quality of materials and work experience, will shop around before I decide. This company received photos and details of my concerns immediately after installation which I still have should that email be needed.

  • Maintenance items straight forward - replace ceiling fan, replace disposal. Real value was in planning for a future re-model. Listening to my ideas; asking questions; identifying alternate materials/construction techniques; letting me decide without 'pushing' a preferred option.

  • The contractor was very efficient, demonstrated excellent skills and professionalism, was on time in every scheduled step of construction and followed details on plans' modifications and alignment with county inspectors. What a great company!

  • Tim did a superior job! Beautiful work all the way. Involved tearing out a wall, a desk and a cabinet to make a larger pantry for our kitchen. Of all the bids we got, his was the most reasonable plus he actually understood exactly what we wanted. He is truly a craftsman!

  • I called Shapira Builders to get an estimate on adding French doors into an open arch way for my formal dinning room so that the room can be turned into an executive office. Dov was the first estimate I received as I bid out all my jobs by at least 3 contractors. He was priced in line with others, but unlike other contractors who quoted me for the job I asked them to, he went above my request and actually suggested that instead of French doors that I make the doors sliders and to add dry wall to the beam supporting the doors and glass to decorate the arch. Other door companies just quoted me for the doors and explained that there would be a beam that the doors are suspended from (much less attractive) and I would need to call someone else to dry wall around it. Needless to say, his willingness to use his expertise to make suggestions is what set him apart. He installed the doors and added the dry wall, he even helped me look for a glass company that would be willing to install window stops for the glass since I could not find on willing to do that part, only install the glass. I could not be happier with how nice these doors look. They look like they came with the house instead of installed after, which is exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend him for this type of work. Any concerns and doubts I had along the way, he addressed them head on and gave alternatives to make me feel at ease. The approximate cost for this work was $2500.00.

  • Called after 5pm for service on my garage door opener.  Made an appointment for service the next day.  They were at my home for service promptly at the time of my appointment.  After a quick look at the problem Adam explained what needed to be done.  He gave me the cost for repair.  I ask about installing a new opener and it was no problem and he went to work on replacing it.  I was very happy with the service and would highly recommend this company.

  • Work was very professional, especially the skip trowel or Santa Fe lathe work. The paint was matched perfectly; the interior wall was built using 16 inches on center 2 by 4's, with insulation inserted between the two sheets of dry wall.  The work area was cleaned up each evening. This job took 3 days by one person who was skilled in all aspects of the job.
I could not be happier. The price was very competitive when compared to the other written quotes I received.   I purchased all the material.

  • - Tony was courteous when answering my range of questions and promptly mailed out wood and paint samples (high quality samples) for submitting to our HOA for approval.
    - Richard was prompt and professional when coming out to our home to take measurements.
    - The gentleman who installed our gate arrived as scheduled and took the time to do a quality installation.
    - My neighbors have already commented on how great our new gate looks.
    - Michele G.
  • Salvador was my 3rd estimate (only one off Angie's List).  I knew the others were clearly trying to take advantage of me.
Salvador was HONEST and a had a very qick response time, which was very helpful.   He patched and repaired my exterior drywall, then would NEVER know there had been a repair and it's above the front door!  I HIGHLY recommend Salvador!
(He's very handy, so if you're unsure if he handles your type of job, just call him and ask!)
