The process was awesome. He let us know what decisions needed to be made by when and gave us all the resources we needed to make wise decisions about EVERY aspect of our home. The man even went and watched the rain on three different occasions to check the grade of our land before making the first dig!! If you want attention to detail and a good steward of your money, this is the man and company for you!!!!!!! We closed with equity in our beautiful home.

The owner missed a schedule appointment because he said he didn't get the memo. We schedule for a meeting the following day. He showed up at my house 20 mins late, was filthy and smelled like cigarettes. He measured the space I wanted a quote on, and seemed to know what he was doing until he got to the stairs, where his partner had to tell him that stairs weren't measured, they were done by count. This is the owner!!! Shouldn't be know what he's doing? The meeting was on a Thursday, and he said he'd crunch the numbers and give me an estimate "soon" I waited over a week before I finally called him and requested that I receive my quote. He said he hadn't done it yet because he was trying to get ready for a colonoscopy. I'm not kidding. He told me he would get it to me in a couple of hours. By that evening, I finally had my quote. The stairs seemed a decent price but the small 300 sq foot room upstairs was going to be $2000. A little pricy for me.

My wife and I chose Toulmin Home to build our dream home. They came highly recommended by several people and we believed we had made the right choice of builder for our home. That was the furthest from what has transpired.   Our home building experience has been a complete nightmare. The owner of Toulmin Homes and his project supervisor, have no attention to detail and have continued to cause our family pain and suffering with all the problems that our house has. In addition they have been completely complacent with our request to correct things during the building process and now 9 months after moving in we are still dealing with issue and new ones are popping up each and everyday.   This list of issues and lack of attention to details are as follows   1)Most alarming is the fact that Toulmin Homes has exposed us to a potential law suit from our neighbor by placing our down comer lines on our neighbor’s property and draining all rain onto there lots. I pointed this out to The project manager during the building process and he disregarded my concerns.  2)Our oversized sliding doors were not installed correctly and after 3 hours his framing company fixed the doors but they had to use 2 jacks to move the header and then remount the doors to the house.   3)At the start of building the house we were given a bid for flooring, the bid included ~3900 ft of wood flooring and ~600 ft of tile. The problem was that are house was under 3500 ft total. The over billing could have cost my wife and I an extra $10,000 if I was not familiar with building bids. My question is how many people didn’t catch these overages?  4)When starting the building process we were given a building list and filled it out. After moving in and having our winter power bill increase 400% from one month to the next we determined the builder had not looked at our wish list and had installed home heating units that he select. And one of the units were broken, which caused the large heating bill.  5)The painting company (Fine Line Painting) has done a horrible job. There are runs, lumps, 25% of our can lights have paint on them, and within 6 months of moving in the paint is fading on the outside. In addition, I caught the painter drinking on the job and the owner of Toulmin brushed it off as though it was no big deal. The painters have been back to the house multiple times and each time they have made the paint worse. The have dropped paint on our hardwood floors. He responded by offering us $2000 so we could hire our own painters. But that was completely in appropriate since our entire house need to be repainted and we paid ~$30,000 to have our home painted.  6)There were electrical plugs that did not work and they could not figure out were the wires went. The had to cut holes in the walls to run new wiring  7)They installed the wrong wood staircase treads that did not match the floor and we were told there was nothing they could do. But then our neighbor had the same floors put in and their treads matched. They had to rip out our entire staircase after we had moved in causing a huge mess.  8)Our son’s bathrooms shower was leaking and had to be repaired. And is leaking again.  9)The electricians did not install the remote receivers in our ceiling fans and they cannot be controlled by the remotes. When you pay the builder a building fee of ~$62,000.00 you shouldn’t have to ask for them to do their job.  10)There were areas of the hardwood that was not stained and the company had to return after we had moved in to repair the floor.  11)The back patio cement was not finished correctly  12) The landscaping light wires were buried on our neighbors lot and was cut when the neighbor began prepping their lot to build.  13) Our driveway is cracking because irrigation lines were run under the driveway and were not buried deep enough. Toulmin’s response was cement crack and completely disregarded my concerns.  14) The ductwork under the house had to be repaired and parts of it had to be replaced twice.   These are just the major issues and there are several other minor issues that have arise. My family and I cannot stress enough that through out the building process tried to address these issues with Toulmin and we were continuously insured that things would be perfect with the house, but most of the time this was just lip service to get us to stop complaining at that moment. If you read Toulmin’s web page and the project manager description states, “the project manager coordinates all subcontractor and installation schedules, ensuring that each project moves forward according to plan. By constantly monitoring job progress, he is able to swiftly address any issues as they arise, allowing homeowners to rest at ease knowing their project is being closely and expertly supervised.” This is the furthest from the truth, Toulmin’s project manager is a conman and lied to use throughout this process.   We would never recommend Toulin Homes to anyone, we are completely distraught about our home and it has caused use considerable stress. DO NOT BUILD or BUY from these guys, your home is the largest investment you make.

He has promised to fix issues in the past and the only reason he responded now was threat of an attorney contacting him. He is a big taler who intimidates his subs with loss of business and is not capable of doing the right thing. He should be avoided for future home building jobs. Overall home build took 13 months vs. a plan of 9 months. He worked on building a house for himself and others and let mine sit for days and weeks with no activity. Very un professional and has 99 problems to not do what he said he would do. He is not to be trusted.

If Dusty would have finished the job he started I probably would have given him and his workers a better rating, but he didn't. He walked on the job and left several tasks that I had paid him out for undone.  All in all, I probably lost 500.00 in unfinished work that he had promised.
If you need a rough (roofing-type job), but decent quality job done quickly, I'd hire Dusty.  He and his crew of 10 set trusses and put a new roof on a 900 sqft building in 1.5 days.  That was great. I was happy with that.
I then hired him to do some interior work in the house I am remodeling, this included a host of things I just wasn't going to get to myself.  This is when things went bad.  Some tasks he did fine, like make a custom hand rail for a stairwell. This looked good.  But he was clearly over committed with other jobs and the paint job was bad, he set towel bars and toilet roll holders in apparently random places on the wall, he glued a pivoting mirror to the wall rather than using the pivots, did not replace all the electrical plugs like he had started for the rest of the house, left a broken garbage disposal in place and the most disappointing and frustrating thing was that he wouldn't return my phone calls to handle any of these complaints or finish the work he had specified.  In hindsight, I think he intentionally played me. For example, I gave him a list of items he needed to do, but I didn't have a copy myself, so at the end I couldn't absolutely verify all the items we had agreed upon.  He wouldn't return the list. He "lost" it.  Plus, after I paid him out he was in a bit of a rush to get the check cashed. I never heard back from after that.    I had paid him a substantial amount of money for the rough jobs on the garage and patching a drive etc; and so I thought we had a fairly trustworthy relationship at that point, but at the end I felt taken advantage of and cheated.  I cannot recommend him for any work because of this.

Too say that I was pleasantly surprised would be a under statement. In particular, Hewtep and there representative Larry were just outstanding in the quality of there work and in their overall professionalism. They were always on time, worked hard while they were
here and conducted themselves as gentlemen. Also the numerous subcontractors did an outstanding job which included the plumbers, the painters, the cabinet makers, the carpenters and the countertop people. I was especially impressed by there insistence on being sure that the work met high standards and if it did not, they did not hesitate to make it right! I would recomend this company to anyone who has a need for home repairs, remodeling or additions.

we had an extra room added to the back of our home, from start to finish was just over 2 weeks much quicker than we were prepared to wait. The Foreman was on the site everyday checking in and calling to make sure things were going good, The Crew was very nice and knowledgeable of what they were doing, It was nice to work with a contractor that did everything for you. We would love to have them do more work for us in the future.

Keith has a full-time job, but does repairs, remodelling, and builds homes in his spare time. He is very easy to work with and accommodating, and very reasonable in his prices. I have even had to insist that he take payment for work that he did not even want to charge for. He just enjoys working with his hands, and if he doesn't think he can do a particular type of job, he will tell you. Some times he gets so busy that you have to remind him to come and do a particular task, but that has not really been a problem for me, and he stands behind his work.

Mr. Owen was rarely at the job site to supervise construction, and when the house was well along in construction he unilaterally changed our agreement from fixed price to "cost + ten percent." He told me that I could accept it or take it to court, and as that would likely have taken a long time, I had to agree to his change. I understand that one of his subs even told my wife that he was told by Mr. Owen to use more hours to increase the cost, which would increase Owen's income. I finally had to tell Owen to cease work, and I had others finish the work. There were many problems with the house, most of which Owen would never correct. Examples include improperly installed parquet flooring, causing it to warp and separate every winter; backwards installation of fireplace "heatilator" fans, so that they blew down and toward the fireplace; cracked driveway; uneven ceiling in the upstairs den; damaged bath tub; poor materials in the deck, leading to warping & cracking of the posts and decking and exudation of resin from the wood; separation and lifting of vinyl flooring in the kitchen; separation of window weatherstripping from some windows; no overflow drain outlet for the water heater; trees left under the driveway rather than being hauled away; and leaving no opening to a crawl space, which lead to one having to be made to allow access to leaking plumbing. Also, early in the construction, the opening for the door to my downstairs garage was built smaller than the plans called for, leading to difficulty in my getting my boat in and out of the garage ever after. Construction also took substantially longer than had been promised, causing difficulty for my wife, my daughter, and me, and my parents who were to live with us. Needless to say, I could never recommend this builder.
