Finding the Best In-Home Daycare or Child Care

My daughter has been at this center since May 2011 and we love it here.  The teachers are, for the most part, very friendly and excellent with the kids.  I've only met a few I didn't care for, and those issues had nothing to do with the kids - just personality conflicts.  My daughter's teacher is incredible.  The prices are reasonable for the quality of the childcare received.  The facility is secured with a keycard entry.  The playground has a fence enclosure and is a very large playground.  The hours are fabulous.  They are open from 630a - midnight M-F, so on the nights I have to work late, I don't have to worry about finding a second sitter.  I've dropped in a few times around lunch to see what was being fed to the kids and have never had a complaint with the quality of the food.  I do wish breakfast was a bit more diverse, but it really isn't much different than what would be served at home (cereal, oatmeal, eggs and biscuits, cheese toast, etc).  Each child has an assigned cot for nap time.  My daughter has learned so very much while she has been at this school.  She is writing her name, all of her ABCs and numbers, short words, she's learning Spanish, and so much more.  They even make learning so much fun that she's enthusiastic about doing extra homework books I have at home for her to supplement what she learns at school.  My only complaint is that there isn't always someone in the office to answer the phone, so I sometimes have to call a few times to get someone to answer.  I do have the teacher's cell number, though, so now I usually just text her directly if something is going on.  It's a non-issue.  Unless we move out of the area, we won't be changing schools any time soon!

First Baptist Church Trussville Child Care
They have childcare from baby to 5-year-olds and they have low teacher-child ratio. They got strict security. First Baptist Church Trussville Child Care is very clean and it's Christian-based.  My grandson has been there 5 years. My granddaughter has just been there almost 1 year.

    Cahaba Valley Learning Center
My son is 15months old and has been at this daycare since he was 8weeks old. The only thing I dont like about the daycare is the location, I have to travel the length of 280 and battle traffic in order to pick him up by 6pm. They have webcams where you can log in and see your child through out the day. The facilities are nice and clean, all of the kids are happy. I am very picky when it comes to child care and I must say that Cahaba Valley hasnt disappointed me yet.

I have liked this daycare very well. I feel very comfortable leaving my daughter there. I feel like the staff is genuinely interested in giving the kids what they need, rather than in just making money. They were very friendly and accomodating when I was pregnant, letting me tour the facility three separate times. I would definitely recommend this daycare and will use it with my next child.

    Gateway Academy Northeast
Gateway was absolutely wonderful! My husband's job recently relocated us to Alabama and, unfortuantely, my son no longer attends this daycare. However, they were amazing! My son is now seven months old and attended Gateway from the time he was 6 weeks old to about 6 1/2 months. The ladies in the infant room were great. Actually, the entire staff was great and really made me feel as though they cared about my child. My son is my first (and only) child and, as any new parent, I was worried about leaving him with anyone! However, the staff at Gateway alway made me very comfortable. They also gave me tips on everything under the sun. I do not live near any family and most of my friends do not have children but the staff at Gateway was always willing to offer advice. For example, when my son first started eating baby food, they gave me several ideas and informed me about all sorts of products that really helped me out. Also, staff from other areas would come say hi to my son and knew his name even though they did not work directly with him. Ms. Nicole, Ms. Pat, and Ms. Debra in the infant room were wonderful! On my son's last day at Gateway, everyone said goodbye to him and hugged him. It made me so happy to know that they truly cared about my son during his time at Gateway.

    St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church
I've been using St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church for 2 years on a daily basis. They're wonderful. They have an excellent curriculum that's Christian based but it's not overboard.

I like their facility. It is unlike other child care centers, they are very, very clean - very sanitary. The big selling point for me was a  lot of day care centers don't have a nurse on staff but they do. So they always have a nurse on the staff and the nurse is extremely, overly responsive. Anytime, any little thing happens, you are called immediately. So we always felt that our children are very safe and very protected. The staff is high;y communicative with you. You get e-mails everyday from them telling you what's going on with your child. You are constantly updated. you know exactly what's going on.

Our son was in the infant room here for about 6 months.  At first, we were very happy with the care.  This was our son's first experience with daycare, so we didn't really have anything to compare it to.  We began to learn that he was placed in the high chair or in the swing for most of the day, and was not given the freedom to practice crawling or interacting with other children.  There was no structure of education or learning (which at the infant age is difficult).  However, when the babies were not in a high chair or swing, they were up dancing around to rap/pop music that was being played in the INFANT room.  Also, they promoted the dancing of the children (i.e. "shake your booty" type dancing) and videotaped them to post on facebook.  We did sign a waiver stating that videos and photos were fine for facebook, but we were not pleased with the style of music being played, or the suggestive types of dance that were being taught to the infants and toddlers.  The teachers were very nice, though, as too were the rest of the staff.  My son really enjoyed it there, but it was nothing more than babysitting. We took him out and put him in a more structured learning environment.  He was way behind other children of his age, and it took him about 3 months to catch up to the social and physical skills of the other children.  I believe having him at this daycare hindered his growth, and I am so glad that we took him out when we did.

Our original meeting with the director five months before my son was going to start school there went very well so we decided to apply. In the time between submitting our application and his first day they changed directors. Upon our arrival on his first day of care the director was shocked to see us and had no clue who my son was or that he was coming. She showed us to the nursery and then managed to dig his file out of somewhere, but never apologized. This is our first child and we're hesitant to send him to school and this experience left me with a terrible feeling as I left to return to my first day of work following maternity leave.  We got through that first week but things never got better. Older students, 2or 3 years old, were consistently placed in my son's class because they were short on teachers. My son received limited tummy time because of this. The director was apologetic but unwilling to stop doing that when we addressed it with her. The ladies in his class were sweet to my son and patient with his spitting up. Unfortunately, none of them are full time so there was a constant stream of different people through the week taking care of my son, which made me uncomfortable.
